in

BOSTON -- The U S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the

New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NH DES)

announce that the removal of the contaminated building at the New

\^

Hampshire Plating Company Superfund Site began this week. The

work is scheduled to be completed in six to eight weeks.

The building is slated for demolition since studies show the building and surrounding soils continue to contaminate the groundwater. The building itself also obstructs further study and potential cleanup of soils underneath the foundation suspected of containing a significant amount of contamination.

The removal action will involve:

^ ^

- decontaminating the building and the remaining

processing equipment;

- dismantling and disposing off-site of the building

and its contents;

- excavating and disposing off-site contaminated soils

found immediately beneath the building;

- sampling and off-site disposal of the underground

storage tank and

- regrading and placing a temporary cover over the

former building location to prevent rainwater from

infiltrating the soil.

Prior to placement of the temporary cover, the remaining

soil beneath the former building will be sampled.

Based on the resulting data, a decision will be made as to whether it will be necessary to clean up additional soil at the time of the final cleanup remedy. As such, this removal action is expected to be consistent with the final remedy.

The contract has been awarded to Haliburton NUS and their subcontractor, TRC Environmental Corporation.

At a public meeting and hearing held at the Merrimack Court last year, community members were given information on the EPA's preferred recommendation for taking the removal action and an opportunity to comment on the action. Comments made at the hearing and those received in writing during the 3 0-day comment period supported the EPA's recommendation to remove the building and nearby soils off the property.

The EPA Action Memorandum for the Removal, the Responsiveness Summary (which summarizes and responds to all public comments), and a transcript of the hearing are available for review in the NHPC document repository in the Merrimack Public Library and the EPA Records Center, 90 Canal Street, 1st Fl. Boston, MA 02114. Contact: Jim Kyed 627/573-5929.
