Recording Books Read

(Procedural Mini-lesson for Reading)

Purpose: This lesson is to encourage students to read different types of genre books introduced to them during the school year. Students will be able to keep a log of reading material they have read or abandoned. Students will find authors, writing, and topics they enjoy reading by keeping a reading log. This lesson needs to be introduced at the beginning of Reader’s Workshop.

Materials Needed:

• Copy of Daily Reading Log

• Pencil

Time Required:

10-15 minutes

Objectives:

NCTE

✓ Students read a wide range of print and non-print texts to build an understanding of texts, of themselves, and of the cultures of the United States and the world; to acquire new information; to respond to the needs and demands of society and the workplace; and for personal fulfillment. Among these texts are fiction and nonfiction, classic and contemporary works.

✓ Students read a wide range of literature from many periods in many genres to build an understanding of the many dimensions (e.g., philosophical, ethical, aesthetic) of human experience.

✓ Competency Goal 5 – The learner will respond to various literary genres using interpretive and evaluative processes.

01. Increase fluency, comprehension, and insight through a meaningful and comprehensive reading program by:

• Reading self-selected literature and other materials of interest to the individual.

• Reading literature and other materials selected by the teacher.

02. Study the characteristics of literary genres (fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry) through:

• Reading a variety of literature and other text (e.g., young adult novels, short stories, biographies, plays, free verse, narrative poems).

Script:

“We’re going to talk about reading logs and why it is important to keep a record of the books you are reading or have read. (Distribute copies of the daily reading log.) This reading log is to be used to record all books that you read during the year. When this log is full, you can ask me for another one. You will be required to read a total of 30 minutes or longer each night. You will record the title of the book, the date you began reading the book, and the date you finished. Please record whether you abandoned the book as well. I would also like for you to keep record of the type of genre you’re reading and comment about how you liked the book or why you didn’t like the book. By keeping a record of the books you read, you will be able to remember authors’ names of books you enjoyed. You will be able to inform others about books you disliked. You will introduce yourself to genre you never thought you would read. A reading log will allow you to locate a group of books you can relate to and enjoy reading. I would like for you keep your reading log in the front section of your reading journal for easy access. Let’s begin reading.”
