View the Residence video – may not be able to watch youTube in the class room but will help you see the art and understand the process.

Instructions:

1. Discuss (do not read word for word the bio included in the lesson) artists, keywords, obvious properties of glass, and explain that their picture is part of a bigger picture. While discussing have another volunteer to use a bottle cap (with the student’s name on it), with a small hole through the middle to run the string through and knot, this will be the bottom of the sculpture. Do not hand out until after step 6.

2. Have students watch slide show from artists’ web pages to see the original installation.

3. Have students cut plastic into various shapes and sizes

4. Have students poke a tiny hole with the screw in the direction that the string will be going, in each piece of plastic (to run the string through). ALL PIECES!

5. Have the students (this is something that you can do in advance, or have other volunteers in the classroom help with).

6. Have the students lay out their pattern of plastic pieces in the order they want them on the string.

7. Hand out string with bottle cap on it.

8. Have the students run the string through the plastic pieces to fill the string, use pieces of the straw as spacers, following their pattern, leaving 6 inches of string free at the end.

9. Tie a knot at the top of their sculpture and at the end of the fishing line.

10. Hang the sculptures either from the ceiling allowing the sculpture to move and distort the light.
