Minutes from the May 19 Parents Club Meeting
Minutes from the May 19 Parents Club Meeting
Mrs. Williamson began with a prayer to “Mary Immaculate, Patroness of the United States.” In her Principal’s Report, she spoke of the many things students have been involved in and achieved in the past few months, including the spring musical; the Youth Rally with Pope Benedict XVI; the music students’ competition in Washington, D.C.; the African-American history trip; economics trip; the mock trial team’s quarterfinal finish; a very successful field day; the excellent Jazz Night event; and of course, the Junior/Senior prom. Mrs. Williamson said the spring sports season is going well, with many teams qualified for post-season play. Finally, she stated that the school has been very pleased with outcomes from the Professional Learning Communities this year, and looks forward to building on this success.
The guest speakers for the evening were a panel of NWC alumni: Jay Leary ’05 (Bentley College ‘09), Maria Angelico ’06 (Catholic University of America ‘10), Sarah Schwartz ’07 (College of the Holy Cross ‘11), Joel Ortiz ’05 (UCONN ’09), Joe Fusco ’04 (Fairfield University ’08), Carrie Schwartz ’06 (College of the Holy Cross ‘10), Dan Martinez ’06 (Central CT State ‘10). Based on their experiences, the students offered many tips about college life, including rooming issues, internships etc., and then they responded to questions from parents. In the academic area, all of the students reported that they felt their Northwest Catholic education had prepared them very well for college, especially in the area of writing and research. The other very interesting area was their responses to the question: What makes a high school student marketable to a college (in addition to strong academic performance)? The graduates stated that they felt the following things were very important:
• Community service – beyond what is required for the sophomore service project
• Being involved in extracurricular activities
• Developing a passion for something and being able to articulate it
• Exhibiting leadership skills through a designated position or in some other way
The parents were very grateful for the input from the college students!
Here’s a wonderful and simple way to help those in need this summer:
Visit the web site , which provides educational games for children of all ages.
There’s a great vocabulary game on the home page that is excellent for all our students. For each question answered correctly, the organization donates 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program. Try it. It is fun!
History/World Languages Department Trip Announced
The History and World Languages Departments will sponsor an educational trip to Spain during February vacation of 2009. Highlights of the trip will include visits to Madrid and Barcelona, a professionally guided tour of the Prado Museum, and excursions to the ancient cities of Toledo and Segovia. Faculty members from both departments will chaperone the trip, and particular emphasis will be placed on the language and history of Spain. The cost of the trip will be $2,623; students may secure a spot by placing a $495 deposit, and may set up an interest-free payment plan with the tour company for the remaining balance. For more information, please contact Mr. Paul Fitzpatrick (236-4221, x212 or pfitzpatrick@).

The Need for Blood Does Not Take a Vacation: Please Keep Giving!
The American Red Cross, which coordinates our annual on-site blood drive sponsored by the NWC Student Council, reminds us that the need for blood persists all year long – even when you’re on vacation! In fact, Connecticut typically has to rely on other states for 15,000 units of blood each year, because we need so much more than is collected at local drives.
So please: Consider donating blood this summer through the local Red Cross office in your town. Be sure to let them know you’re from Northwest Catholic – and let us know, too, because we’d love to hear about it!
