Safe Medication Administration, Certification and Recertification Guidelines
• Safe medication administration to the people we serve is our goal and expectation. It is also considered a minimum requirement of jobs with ServiceNet when the job involves medicating individuals in MAP registered sites.
• Per the guidelines set forth by DDS and DMH, all ServiceNet registered MAP sites will abide by the protocol outlined by the MA DPH and American Red Cross in the Medication Administration Program (MAP).
• All employees must be referred to the MAP Trainings and Recertification Classes by a supervisor.
• Permanent employees will be given priority, with sufficient notice and whenever possible, in being placed on the next available Full MAP Training class roster. Servicenet will provide reasonable opportunity for employees to attend the full MAP Training and Red Cross Test.
• Relief staff can be referred and receive Full or Recertification MAP Training with referral from their supervisor, as space allows.
• Once hired into a permanent position, staff will be expected to achieve MAP Certification within the first 3 months of employment from the date of hire, if they are employed in a registered MAP site; if they fail to do so, their supervisor reserves the right to drop the employee to relief status or terminate the employee. This will be part of the employee’s 3 month evaluation.
• If an employee works in an area in which MAP is recommended but not required (e.g. Brain Injury programs), all staff will be trained in the Full MAP training class, and must pass with the ServiceNet internal testing, however he or she will not be required to complete final testing with the American Red Cross. If the staff is not able to pass ServiceNet’s internal testing, he or she may not pass medications in the program, and the supervisor reserves the right to drop the employee to relief status or terminate the employee.
• If an employee has a medication occurrence (as defined in the MAP Policy Book, dated 9/1/10), or practices improper MAP or ServiceNet procedure, if indicated, there will be disciplinary action commensurate with the gravity of the occurrence, and in conjunction with documentation held and monitored through Human Resources and the employee’s supervisor.
• Permanent employees will have 3 opportunities to test with the American Red Cross to achieve MAP Certification; if the employee does not achieve MAP Certification within the 3 try’s, your supervisor, in consultation with the nurse manager/ director, may determine that you have failed to meet the minimum requirements to remain in your professional position resulting in a variety of outcomes, including but not limited to, termination. The same time frames apply to relief staff who have been trained in MAP through ServiceNet.
• Once an employee becomes MAP certified, he or she must be supervised by the program director or their designee for at least 3 med passes before passing meds independently. The supervised med passes will be documented by the PD or designee.
• If an employee is out on leave for any reason, he or she may not take a Full MAP class or refresher/ recertification class until they have been referred by their supervisor, and cleared by the pertinent powers that be(e.g. medical/ psychiatry, HR, etc.) and placed in a position with an hourly commitment commensurate with position held prior to the leave.
• All employees are ultimately responsible for keeping their MAP certification current. Refresher / recertification classes are offered within the ServiceNet agency, and will be available to all staff in a time sensitive manner, provided the request for placement in a class occurs within 3 months of their expiration. If an employee fails to recertify before their certification expires, or fails to meet the standard for MAP Recertification, he or she may no longer legally pass meds and must cease doing so immediately. Again, if discipline is indicated, it will be given based on manager’s input, nursing observations re: adherence to MAP standards and skill level, and Human Resources documentation.
• If a new staff person is hired by ServiceNet and already holds MAP certification, that staff person must demonstrate competence with the MAP trainer prior to passing meds in their identified program.
