HYPERLINK "" Cincinnati Reds baseball club came through with the win today after playing their division rival Pittsburg Pirates. It was a pitcher’s duel until late in the game with only 10 hits through the entire game. For Cincy, Sal Romano took the mound and churned out a solid outing going eight whole innings with out allowing a single run.“yeah, I just felt like I got into a good rhythm, the first batter of the game I think was a ten or eleven pitch at bat, but after that felt like a hit a good groove” Reds pitcher Sal Romano said. for Romano this was his longest outing in his rookie career. Romano managed to shut down the Pirates offense keeping them to five hits total on the night with six strikeouts and zero walks recorded. "He has matured so rapidly in the months he's been here. He is all ears and wants to get better" Reds manager Ryan Price said. Defensively the lineup for Cincinnati provided helpful for Romano as there were a number of close plays, including one stretched out grab and throw from the third base line in the sixth inning to rob Pirates outfielder Jordan Luplow from a base hit single. It was a play that began to shift momentum for the Reds, and they would continue to build that momentum in the seventh. For the pirates starting pitcher, Ivan Nova showed his strength only allowing only three hits total and struck out six. The two runs he would allow late in the game would eventually be the defining factor to the games outcome. Nova had some heads-up defense on his side throughout the game. Andrew McCutchen recovered from almost falling over chasing a fly ball to make an out in the first and catcher Elias Diaz would make a heads up play in the fourth with a back pick to first to get Joey Votto out when he wasn’t looking. “He’s a good player, He’s a good catcher, He’s just getting more time to play and more experience, really sharp play with the back pick” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle Said. Offensively for the pirates, they could not get anything started, with an exception of a ninth inning comeback attempt, Andrew McCutchen would drive a ball over the right field fence for a solo home-run inching his team one point away from tying things up. The pirates would make offensive adjustments in an attempt to bring the game to extra innings, a runner substitution for freese who drew a walk with two-out in the ninth would set things up nicely for a quick steal putting someone in scoring position. Reds Pitcher Cody Reed would come in and yield a hit to second baseman Scooter Gennett to thwart the comeback attempt by the Pirates. “Were just not getting enough things done on offense with putting multiple runs in an inning, in a game, we’ve gotta continue working on offense” Hurdle said. The Reds and Pirates face off again tomorrow at 1:10 p.m.ET at Great American Ball Park for their final game of the series, Cincinnati will look to sweep the pirates if they pull of the win tomorrow. Gerrit Cole will take the mound for the Pirates and Robert Stephenson will suit up for the Reds. ................
