In laboratory experiments you get harmed if you’re not careful. Chemicals can harm you physically and internally to your body. It’s important to follow these safety guides so when you’re dealing with a hazardous chemical you’ll know how to handle it. Also, you’ll learn how to be well prepared if it comes in contact with skin. This manual also includes safety rules which you have to abide by anytime you’re in the lab experimenting. Chapter One: Mandatory RulesChapter One: Mandatory RulesMandatory rules are rules you must abide by at all times when you are in the laboratory. These rules are important because they prevent you from getting harmed. Violation of these rules will have consequences decided by your teacher.1. Protective Outfit2. Clean Area3. Safety Goggles4. Safety Gloves5. Hair Safeties6. Accessories7. FoodProtective OutfitFor laboratory clothing you must wear an outfit that covers your skin less for your safety. Shorts, tank tops, and capris are unacceptable for lab attire. Laboratory coat would be preferable to wear to a laboratory. In the laboratory you should wear closed shoes like sneakers or closed toed shoes. In a laboratory it can get messy so if a chemical does spill it will soak onto the cloth giving you enough time to remove or wash the spot where you been exposed to the chemical. Clean AreaMake sure before starting that the area where you will be conducting your experiment is clean. If the area is not clean then clean the area before starting the experiment. Once done with the experiment you must leave your area clean.Safety Goggles You must wear safety lab goggles at all times when in the laboratory. This is to protect your eyes from harmful chemical, vapors, and splashes. If chemical splashes in your eyes then damage to your vision might result. Safety GlovesWear safety gloves when dealing with hazardous chemicals. Safety gloves protect your hands from harmful chemical liquids. Hair Safety388620041338500If you have long hair then pull back your hair into a ponytail. Loose hair can get burned or chemically damaged. AccessoriesMake sure your jewelry, scarfs, or hats don’t get in the way of your experimenting in the lab. Avoid wearing long chains, necklaces, scarfs, or dangling bracelets in the laboratory. FoodFood and drinks are prohibited in the laboratory. You can’t eat or drink in the lab and also do not taste unknown substances in the laboratory. Tasting unknown substances in the laboratory is dangerous for your health. Chapter Two: Emergency Laboratory Equipment Chapter TwoEmergency InformationThis chapter is about the information of the emergency laboratory equipment that is available when needed. Also this chapter provides information on when and how to use the emergency equipment.Tell the TeacherThe Number one rule is when any experiment goes wrong is to always inform the teacher first. Do not wait until the last minute of class to inform your teacher. It’s better to be safe than be sorry.Emergency Eye wash and Shower StationWhen there is a situation where a chemical substance comes in contact with your eyes or any body part, then you have to use the eye wash or shower station. You can use the emergency eye wash and shower station to flush away hazardous chemical substances from your eyes or body part. You must rinse to flush the substance out for minimum of five and maximum of sixty minutes. The time for rinsing depends on how corrosive and irritating the damage is. Here is the list of rinsing time for the conditions that may apply to you:For mild irritation rinse for 5 minutesFor mild to severe irritation rinse for 20 minutesFor painful irritation rinse for 60 minutesFire Blanket and ExtinguisherThe fire blanket and extinguisher are used to put out fires. The fire blanket is fireproof and is very effective when there is a small fire. If you are caught on fire, drop to the ground, wrap yourself in the fire blanket, and roll. When there is a fire outbreak in the lab, then you should use the fire extinguisher to put out the fire. Fume HoodThe Fume hood controls exposure to toxic flammable vapors and gases. The fume hood helps you from getting exposed to hazardous substances in the laboratory air environment. A fume hood has a glass opening where it has an isolated area inside. The fume hood contains hazardous vapors inside the ventilation. Chapter Three: Laboratory Equipment30480039306500Chapter ThreeLaboratory EquipmentLaboratory equipment’s are very useful when experimenting; it can be quite hard to experiment without some this equipment listed down below:BeakerYou can use a beaker to hold liquids and the beaker to heat the liquids, if needed.Beaker TongsYou can use beaker tongs to grab or hold the beaker which contains hot liquid.Erlenmeyer FlaskYou can use an Erlenmeyer flask when dealing with liquid’s that release gases during a reaction.Flask TongsYou can flask tongs to hold or to move an Erlenmeyer flask only.Graduated CylinderYou can use a graduated cylinder to measures volume of liquids.Test TubesYou can use test tubes to hold chemicals and mix chemicals with. Also you can use the test tubes to heat chemicals.Test Tube BrushYou can use a test tube brush to clean out the test tubes.Test Tube HolderYou can use a test tube holder to hold the test tube or move the test tube.Test Tube RackYou can use a test tube rack to hold more than one test tube.Dropper PipetYou can use a dropper pipet to carry small amount of liquid from place to place. You can control how many drops you want.ForcepsYou can use forceps to pick up small objects.Electronic BalanceYou can use an electronic balance to weigh any chemical liquids, solids, or powered substances.Bunsen Burner You can use a Bunsen burner for heating liquids or solids.Stir RodYou can use a stir rod to mix chemicals together.IndexCChemical, 9E INDEX \c "2" \z "1033" Emergency, 9Equipment, 13FFood, 5Fume hood, 10GGoggles, 4Gloves, 4HHair, 4BibliographyBeaker.
