Micro-Teaching Reflection

Micro-Teaching Reflection

My micro-teaching lesson was an introduction to unit conversions and the metric staircase method. I feel that I excelled in preparing a lesson that would be interesting and was flexible with my teaching methods. Lessons on unit conversions are generally mundane where students with experience “tune out” and students without experience are left behind. By beginning the lesson with examples of day-to-day examples of unit conversions, I was able to captivate my audience, making them interested in learning more. I also feel that I expressed the importance of this topic by discussing some of the famous unit conversion errors made in recent history. My original lesson was prepared to be given on an overhead projector, but I was able to quickly change gears when I discovered only computers were available. I was actually impressed with myself that I was able to pull the lesson off as well as I did, seeing how I was extra nervous and felt unprepared due to the equipment mix-up. In general, I feel that I prepared an engaging lesson, by making connections between the topic and familiar things for my audience, and conducted my lesson well under stress.

On the other hand, I know that I need to work on limiting my lesson to the time allowed. I got so caught up on the many possible directions I could take my lesson that I tried incorporating too much into the 7 minute time limit. I believe that the complete lesson I had planned would have been better suited for a 50 minute class period which shows me that I need to actually practice and time my lessons before giving them. Due to the time constraints, I was unable to give a good conclusion to my lesson and this was noticed by my micro-teaching peers. Also, I know that I need to work very hard to prevent myself from saying “uh” so often during my teaching. This will take some time and practice, but I am glad to be aware of it now. Overall, the micro-teaching experience has made me more confident in my teaching and conscious of the things to improve upon.
