The best thing I’ve learned specifically for senior design is the paper layout. I was really concerned that I would not know the format of how to present information, but this class has really helped me out.What do I still need?I need help with flow. I always feel like I’m chopping my essays. I much prefer bullet points that writing paragraphs, so I feel like when I attempt to put things in paragraph form, it comes out in blocks.Student BWhat have I learned thus far that helped me on the report and later on senior design?This class has helped me immensely in the field of communication. I have learnt to consider audience and many other aspects before communicating. I believe that the visuals critique class really helped me because it made me change the way I think regarding visuals. Although it should come to one intuitively, I realized that there is so much more to consider before finalizing a visual. The assignment on explaining concepts to an 11-year old helped me understand the audience in a better way and I believe I learnt a lot from it. Even the shoe-lace tying instructions gave me a reality check regarding the meticulousness required to give appropriate instructions for any small task. Overall, it has been an enriching class till now and the interim report tested us in all the aspects we have learnt.What do I still need?I wish we could learn more about writing. I think I still have not improved my written English as much as I expected to through this class. I think the first few weeks based on improving writing was really helpful but it is gradually fading away. If we had recurring assignments based on improving sentence structure and paragraph structure, I would take away a lot more from this class. Student CWhat have ye learned so far in this class that helped you on the interim report and that you think will help you in senior design next year?I think that simply talking about they style/tone of technical writing has been of the most help to me up until this point, since I have had little prior experience with it. Looking at example of good visuals and bad visuals, good interim reports and bad interim reports and style exercises has helped to familiarize me with this otherwise unfamiliar style.What do you still need from the class?I think what I need is just more of the same, and good feedback on our interim report and other exercises. Anything to keep working on the style of form that any technical writing should take on would be helpful, because just the interim report I don’t think is enough for me to become comfortable with writing technical reports.Student DWhat have ye learned so far in this class that helped you on the interim report and that you think will help you in senior design next year?So far over the course of this class I have learned just how important the small details are in the way we communicate in the written form. Using the examples from class has really helped me present my ideas more effectively. Writing the interim report and the pre-proposal has given me a basic outline of how to develop and create these documents for senior design. I have learned the importance of being visual efficient and appealing, and that not just your writing communicates your ideas.What do you still need from the class?Going forward I would like to create a portfolio type outline with all the rules and guidelines of writing all of the various types of documents. This would help later as a reference in senior design.Student EWhat have ye learned so far in this class that helped you on the interim report and that you think will help you in senior design next year?Before taking this class, I hardly have any chance to really practice my writing after English 2 in freshman year. I do learn many useful techniques such as writing an appropriate outline, setting up the lucid graphs. What do you still need from the class?I felt like the workload is too little. If we can do some kind of take home assignments, mimic the real world scenarios, like writing project report for clients, preparing an introduction of a product, and relate all the things we have done already in a practical sense. Maybe not only just senior design, but more about real world technical writing. ................
