Unit Three: Revision

Our third unit will consist of three elements:

• a portfolio of revised writing and a reflective essay

• group presentations on writing style

• five daily quizzes

Portfolio

Your portfolio must include the following documents:

1. The original version of one major essay written for a freshman composition course (English 101 or 102)

2. A revised version of that major essay

3. Three isolated passages of at least 250 words each from any papers you have written since your junior year in high school, revised to reflect your mastery of at least three of the five lessons covered in our group presentations

4. The original versions of the three passages in # 3

5. Cover memos that identify the changes you made between the originals and the revisions above—one cover memo for the essay, three cover memos for the three isolated passages

6. A reflective essay on your status and growth as a writer, at least two pages

Three Revised Passages: The goal of these passages is to demonstrate improvement. Choose original passages that clearly violated the principles of good style that you have learned in Unit Three. Revise them to demonstrate knowledge and improvement of these principles.

Revised Essay: The goal of the revised major essay is to demonstrate your writing at its best. Choose the essay that you want to revise wisely. You may want to choose an essay that you received a low grade on if you know (from your instructor’s comments and your own intuition) specifically what needs work. In this case, your revision will probably focus on large scale issues such as thesis, organization, content, and analysis. On the other hand, you may choose to revise an essay that you received a high grade on. In this case, you will still need to make significant revisions to the essay; however, your revisions may focus more on style and expression and less on content.

Reflective Essay: The reflective essay should be the first thing included in your portfolio, and it should serve as an introduction to the writing in the portfolio. It should point out the areas of your writing that are strong, and discuss how you have grown as a writer during your first year of college. Think of it not as a thesis-driven essay, but as an introduction to a body of work. I will be making time for in class writing over the next few class periods to help you start generating ideas for this essay.

Presentations and Quizzes

See presentation handout for more information on presentations and quizzes.

Point Values of Assignments

Your syllabus indicates that the portfolio is worth 250 points and the reflective essay is worth 100 points. Instead, I will be including the points for the reflective essay in the 250 portfolio points. The 100 points originally allotted to the reflective essay will instead be allotted to the group presentation.

So far you have taken five quizzes this semester and the two abstracts that you brought (or didn’t bring) to class during Unit Two counted as a quiz. There will be five more quizzes during Unit Three. This means that at the end of the semester you will have taken 11 five-point quizzes. Since I only allotted 50 points to quizzes on the syllabus, I will drop your lowest quiz score.

The syllabus indicates that you will need to write a self-assessment memo in Unit Three. However, I have eliminated this assignment from the syllabus.

Finally, one clarification. Your analysis of a source assignments for Unit Two were worth 25 points. I made a mistake and scored these on a fifty point scale. If you are keeping track of your points, just cut the score you received on this assignment in half. I have already made this adjustment in my grade book.
