1. Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential is only eligible to those that qualify for alternate assessments on their IEP.

2. CDOS Commencement Credential is available currently to ANY student with an IEP that meet the following requirements; the credential can be in addition to a Regents or Local Diploma or it can be offered as an exiting credential as a bridge between a diploma (Regents or Local) and the Skill and Achievement Commencement Credential as an additional safety net. Students must meet the following:

i. 54 Work Based Learning (WBL) hours – usually met by BOCES CTE program

ii. 216 hours in CTE classes (this can include the 54 WBL hours for a total of 216 hours) – this is usually completed by BOCES CTE

iii. Students must demonstrate proficiency in the CDOS Standards – also completed through BOCES

iv. Students must complete an employability profile – also completed through BOCES

v. Students must have a 4 year career plan on file – this is the only home school responsibility.

If a non-BOCES IEP student wants this credential since we do not have a WBL certified instructor, the student would have to complete a 2-year CTE program at home (Ag) or at BOCES or complete the unique careers program. This should be discussed at the students 10th grade IEP meeting to plan for CTE or unique careers.

OTHER HIGH SCHOOL “NEED TO KNOWS”

Importance of 9th grade – This will be the first year that all of your classes will be on your permanent HS transcript that can never be changed. Colleges and technical schools will see your transcripts and grades starting in 9th grade so start taking school seriously if you do not do so already.

No Hatch in HS – In high school there is no hatch program so it is up to each student to realize when they are in need of help and to ask for help when they need it. High school teachers will not hold your hand to make sure you are passing and doing your homework…you must start to take some responsibility for your own work.

Academic Awards

Academic All Star – WBNG puts this on for athletes usually in Fall sports

Scholar Athlete – for students who are in sports and have a stellar GPA…usually in the fall for the winter sports.

Academic O – An average of 85 or above for an entire year (Letter, 1st Bar, 2nd Bar, 3rd Bar), cannot have failed a class, and needs to take at least 5 credits

Honor Roll – A marking period average of 85-91, cannot be failing a class, and needs to be taking at least 6 credits to be eligible.

High Honor Roll – A marking period average of greater than or equal to 92, cannot be failing a class, and needs to be taking at least 6 credits to be eligible.

Move Up – 4 credits and passing grades in Global I and Eng 9 to be a sophomore, 9 credits and passing grades in Global II and Eng 10 to be a junior, and 14 credits to be senior

Ineligibility – After failing course(s) for 1 marking period = Probation AND after failing course(s) for 2 marking periods = Ineligible for ALL school activities.

Dropping classes – Only allowable during the first 3 weeks. Afterwards a student can only drop non- required courses and it will take a conference with the parents, principal, teacher, and counselor.

Steps to ask for help –

1) Get your power school access code to monitor your grades.

2) Realize that you are behind or need help (i.e. have some questionable grades or if you have missed a few days of school).

3) Talk to your teachers to see if you can make up a test or homework BEFORE the end of the marking period.

4) Ask if you can do any other things for extra credit…you never know!

5) Talk to your school counselor if you need help talking to teachers or if you need to know what classes and regents exams are required for graduation.

6) If you still do not seem to understand the work, find out if you can come during the day for help or stay after on days that there is a late bus: Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays

Seat time requirement/attendance policy –

Students must not miss more than 28 days of a one credit class and 14 days of a ½ credit class in a full year schedule. If a student misses more than these days, they will not receive credit for the class and will not be able to take the corresponding regents exam.

Incompletes –

Incomplete grades are normally only given in extenuating circumstances and must be made up within 2 weeks of the end of the marking period. A grade of a 25 represents an incomplete in the writing requirement for Social Studies and/or an incomplete in the lab requirement for Science. An incomplete-25 may be made up at any point before the end of the class.

Schedule – Explain the 8 periods (lunch and breakfast break not included) and no more semesters next year. Next year we plan on report cards every 10 weeks and progress reports with grades at every 5 weeks between report cards. Initially, students are only “requesting” courses but the actual schedule will be determined by required academic intervention services, class priorities and enrollment limits which will be determined by the scheduling program in power school. Actual schedules will be available in the summer for student and family viewing.

Cell phone policy –Cell phone us is only allowed in school before the bell rings at 7:55am, during lunch (11:13-1:43), and after school AND in no cases on the 2nd floor. If you are caught using it outside of the above times, it will be taken by a teacher.
