Psychiatric Nursing: For the love of money or the love of the crazy?Psychiatric nursing probably isn’t the first field that comes to mind when one thinks of science. It is however one of the many professional fields in the world that is science related. Adlai Donaldson is a registered nurse who believes hard work and doing things the right way. He currently works at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Although he does get paid very handsomely it isn’t about the money for him it is much more than that. Being that he is the supervisor for his unit it probably shouldn’t be about the money because that might make his life very miserable. Career PathAdlai Donaldson is a 46 year old registered nurse. He has been a registered nurse for about 17 years. Mr. Donaldson was born and raised in Jamaica. He is very grateful and thankful for his High School in Jamaica called Glenmuir which he believes gave him a good head start on to the path he is on now. He moved to New York in 1993 to come live with his current wife. From there he worked multiple jobs even two at a time to support his fairly new family. He knew he could do better so he pushed himself and strived for more. He worked jobs to pay his way through college. His college route wasn’t the most conventional one according to him. He first got his associates in nursing at Kingsborough community college. After he went to St. Joseph’s college to acquire his bachelors. After getting that degree Mr. Donaldson decided to go back to get his master’s in business and leadership at St. Joseph’s college. He chose to go the nursing route because at the time he came to America that profession was very lucrative. Also he had been a teacher before in Jamaica, but, when he immigrated to America he wasn’t able to dive back in as soon as he wanted so he sought out a better opportunity which was nursing.Climbing up the ladderMr. Donaldson started working as a Nurse in 1998. He started at Kings County Hospital and worked there until 2006. Then worked at St John’s Episcopal Hospital from 2006 to 2011. He also went back to Kings County Hospital in 2008 until 2013 and worked at both Kings County Hospital and at St John’s Episcopal Hospital. From 2011 to the present he works at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He left Kings County Hospital again in 2013 while working there and New York Presbyterian Hospital to solely work at New York Presbyterian Hospital. In a few shorts years though Mr. Donaldson rose up the ranks. By 2001 He became a head nurse. Said he separated himself as an expert and somebody who knew how to lead people. It was his self-motivation and work ethic that he said he learned from his father that helped him rise up the ranks so fast. The most useful skill in his job according to him is having empathy. It allows one to get an intimate understanding of people and their needs. It helps him lead and direct people properly. Psychiatric nursing at the supervisory levelA day in the life of a supervisor for psychiatric nurses is just about as hard as it sounds. It is long days and a lot of work to do within those days. His day starts off about 4am. He has to arrive to work for 7am. He lives in Brooklyn, but, works in Manhattan so he has to take the train which for him his a 2 hour ride. Once he arrives he then has to consult with the overnight workers. Mr. Donaldson has to make sure everything is clinically and operationally sound to start off the day. Once that is over the real day begins. His day consists of many things. Mr. Donaldson has a lot of meetings which has do with his staff and their work. He mainly tries to make sure the nurses have all the right tools and everything they need to conduct themselves in a safe and efficient way. Mr. Donaldson is also the hiring and firing person for his unit. When he hires he is usually the one who trains, educates, and mentors the new nurses. According to him the hardest part of his job is dealing with the diversity of people and balancing everyone’s needs which includes both patients and nurses. His job title entails a lot from him.Mr. Donaldson doesn’t do his job for the money. He instead does it because of the fulfillment he feels of leading people who can make a difference in other’s lives makes him feel a part of something bigger than himself. He also says he enjoys working with some of the most intelligent people he has ever met. Future of psychiatric nursingMr. Donaldson is very excited as to the future of psychiatric nursing. He sees an increasing acceptance of mental illness. He hopes one day it won’t be so stigmatized. A reason why the stigma isn’t as how it used to be is the growth of advocacy for the patients and the laws that ensure vulnerable persons are protected. Mr. Donaldson is very thrilled with the Affordable Care Act and how it will help people with the payment of health care. He loves the idea that people can get the proper treatment whether or not they have the money to afford it. A recent breakthrough in his field that he talked about was having patients being more involved in their own care. Instead of others dictating their how they get handled they have a say in their own treatment. My take on this interviewOne thing that stuck for me was when Mr. Donaldson said it takes an immense amount of dedication to do what he does. Being in it only for the money will make you very miserable. Also he said science being in his life made him understand that for every action there is an equal opposite reaction. Which is newton’s third law. He finally understood it after working as a nurse. He learned to incorporate that in his daily life. I learned some new things like the fact that patients actually get a say in their own treatment. What surprised me was the amount of dedication and patience it takes to do what he does. Also, what surprised me was how fast he rose up the ranks. I believe I will still go the dentistry route, but, this interview did enlighten me as to how it might be working in the health care field. ................
