Acc. Precalc Sunrise and Sunset Lab

Go to and find the sunrise and sunset times for your city. Fill in the chart below.

There is a link to an Excel spreadsheet to help you organize your data on the blog. Remember to take pictures of your work, and save your excel spreadsheets frequently to your student number drive so that you don’t lose your work! Also, when answering the following questions, use proper grammar and complete sentences.

City ______________________________ Latitude ___________ Longitude ___________

After you determine the sunrise and sunset times, convert the times to a 24 hour clock and then to a decimal. For example 1:15 pm would be 13 hours 15 minutes or 13.25. Also, do NOT change to daylight savings time. Complete the chart below.

|Date |Day of Year |Sunrise Time |

|Phase Shift | | |

|Vertical Shift | | |

|Characteristic |Daylight |Night Time |

4. Using or other appropriate software, graph:

a) A scatterplot and regression for the sunrise and sunset times (on the same graph)

b) A scatterplot and regression for the amount of daylight and night time (on the same graph)

Insert the image within the document.

5. Consider the functions for sunrise and sunset. What does the amplitude represent?

6. If you were to predict the period of the function, what should it be? Does your equation confirm this? Why or why not?

7. Graph sunrise time – sunset time vs. day of year. What does this represent? Determine the curve of best fit for this data.

8. Scientists call the longest day of the year the Summer Solstice. According to your graph, on what date does the longest day of the year occur for your city? How many hours of daylight are there?

9. Scientists call the shortest day of the year the Winter Solstice. According to your graph, on what date does the shortest date of the year occur for your city? How many hours of daylight are there?

10. The vernal equinox is the time in the spring when the number of hours of daylight equals the number of nighttime hours. According to your graph, what is the autumnal equinox?

11. Use the internet to determine the actual dates for the above days. The actual date varies from year to year. Why do you think that is so? Compare your findings with your result.
