HANDOUT 2

Christmas

It is celebrated in December the 25th. It conmorates the birth of Jesus. Even though the origins of this celebration are related to Christianity, nowadays it is celebrated by non-christians. Popular celebrations include gift exchange, sending giftcards, and decorating the Christmas tree. In Costa Rica, many people prepare tamales that are prepared with the whole family, and the Nativity scene.

Saint Patrick’s Day

This holiday is celebrated on March 17th . It was originated in Ireland. This holiday has Catholic origins, but it is also celebrated by non-Catholic people in many countries like Ireland, Great Britain, United States, Canada, and Argentina. During this celebration people wear green. In these countries, people organize festivals where they prepare Irish food like bread and pudding. In Costa Rica, most of the people are not used to celebrate this holiday.

Halloween

This celebration has no religious origins. This celebration has Celtic origins. The common elements of this celebration are spiders, ghosts, witches, and pumpkins. In this celebration, children go to houses asking for candy. Many children use to wear disguises. In Costa Rica instead of celebrating Halloween, it is celebrated “El Día de la mascarada” where people wear disguises like La Giganta and La Tsegua.

Thanksgiving Day

This Holiday was created when the English arrive at the United States. The puritans, as it is know the group that came to the United States, did not know how to survive so the Native Americans taught them to grow some vegetables and hunt animals as the turkey. This is one of the most important celebrations in the United States. Americans use to cook food plates such as the pumpkin pie and the turkey. During this celebrations families get together to have dinner.

Saint Valentine`s Day

During this celebration, people use to express their affection to the people they love by giving them flowers, hearts, and gifts. This celebration was named after a priest that used to marry couples in secret, but he was executed on February 14th by the Emperor Claudius II because he did not want to believe in the Roman gods. It is said that he was friend of the prisoner’s daughter, and every time he sent letters to her, he signed them as “From your Valentine.”
