Creative Writing: Write Your Own Song Parody Assignment
Creative Writing: Write Your Own Song Parody Assignment
1. Choose a Christmas song to parody - either a Christmas carol or a popular song. Remember, the original being parodied should have a wide appeal. You may work by yourself, with a small group, or with a partner.
2. Decide on a theme for your parody to add a satirical element. The theme could be anything that bothers you. A good topical theme might revolve around the holidays. Please avoid using Religious Christmas Carols.
3. Mimicking the rhythm and structure of the original, compose new lyrics. Decide which lyrics to keep the same which ones to change for humorous effect. Weird Al often simply rhymes with the original, i.e. "Beat it" to "Eat it" or "Like a Virgin" to "Like a Surgeon."
4. Proofread, edit, and revise. See the Rubric on my Website.
5. Come to class prepared to present your song on Monday, December 21 and Tuesday 22.
