SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF THE TRINITY

Dear Parish Family,

Thank you to all who participated in the Little Flower Novena, especially those who came for the Solemn Closing on Thursday evening.

Also, thank you to the Ladies’ Club and the Men’s Club for hosting our 90th Anniversary adult dinner-dance, Putting on the Ritz, last Saturday evening, September 26, at the Marian Event Center. Also, thanks to all those who attended. I think everyone who attended enjoyed the evening. Special thanks to all those who helped organize the event: Steve and Amy Clegg, Shawn Keenan, Brad Ringer, Daun and Scott Sidor, and Eileen Walters. Special thanks to Bill Witchger, CEO of Marian, and especially William Witchger, who helped make it possible for us to use this beautiful venue.

Thank you to Jim Burks who has served as chairman of the Finance Commission for many years. Jim recently announced his intention to step down as chairman because travel for work has frequently prevented him from attending both Finance Commission and Parish Council meetings. However, Jim has agreed to continue to serve as a member of the Finance Commission.

Upon the recommendation of the Finance Commission, I have appointed Pat Brake as the new chairman and Chris Mennel as the vice-chairman. Thanks, Pat and Chris, for accepting the chairmanship and vice-chairmanship. As a point of interest, the only consultative body required by Canon Law is the Finance Commission.

The Catholic Church from its earliest days has taught the importance of praying for the dead. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God” [CCC #1032].

Over the centuries, the practice developed of requesting Masses for the deceased. At each Mass a priest has a specific intention for that Mass. When someone requests a Mass, the priest makes that intention his own in offering the Mass. Customarily, the person requesting the Mass makes an offering for that Mass. By making the offering, the person is joining himself or herself to the priest’s intention and helps support the priest. In this Archdiocese, the customary offering is $10. You may have a Mass offered by coming into the parish office. If you have questions, please call the parish office.

In times past, Catholics showed their solidarity with the deceased and their families by requesting that Masses be offered for the deceased. Recently, fewer people are requesting Masses for their deceased loved ones, especially as families request contributions to the deceased’s favorite charities or causes, including Little Flower Parish and School, for which we are very grateful.

During the month of November, we will celebrate All Saints Day and All Souls Day. November is the month when the Church remembers the deceased in a special way. I am writing this to remind you that it remains important for us to pray for the dead, especially by having Masses offered for them. Every year, for example, I offer Masses for my mother and father on their birthdays and the anniversaries of their death.

Have a wonderful week.

fr. bob

We extend our sympathy and condolences to Jim and Loretta Miller on the death of their grandson, Matthias Augustine Grimm (infant), son of Paul and Kathleen (Miller) Grimm. Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. May God welcome Matthias into his eternal glory.
