Homely Remedies – G P Approved List

PARACETAMOL 500MG & PARACETAMOL SOLUBLE 500MGS

For the relief of mild to moderate pain including headache, toothache and period pain. Can also be taken to reduce high temperature.

Dose ; 1-2 tablets up to four times a day. Dose may be repeated 4-6 hourly.

Do not take with other medicines that contain Paracetamol.

If pain relief is required for more than 3 days or if pain increases in severity – Consult a GP

SIMPLE LINCTUS SYRUP

For coughs, colds and sore throat.

Dose; 10mls up to three times a day.

Refer to GP if cough is persistent for more than 3 days

STREPSILS SUGAR FREE LOZENGES

For the relief from the discomfort of sore throats.

Dose; Dissolve one lozenge in the mouth every 2-3 hours.

MAGNESIUM TRISILICATE MIXTURE

For the relief of heartburn and dyspepsia (indigestion)

Dose; 10 – 20mls in a little water, up to three times a day.

If no relief from dyspepsia within 24 hours – consult a GP

Tums

For the relief of indigestion, heartburn and trapped wind.

Dose ; 1-2 tablets to be sucked or chewed as required. No more than 16 tablets in 24 hours.

Senokot

For relief of constipation (stimulant laxative)

Dose ; 2 tablets at bedtime.

Not recommended for prolonged use, only one or two days. (high fibre diet is preferable)

Loperamide (Imodium)

For diarrhoea

Dose ; Initially 4mgs then 2mgs after each loose stool.

Only for use in extreme circumstances. It is better not to treat diarrhoea, give plenty of fluids and let nature take its course.

If symptoms persist for more than 24 hours – consult a GP

Piriton / Chlorphenamine

For symptomatic relief from allergic reactions such as nettle rash, hives, heat rash, Reactions to insect bites

Dose: 1 tab 4-6 hourly – maximum of 6 tablets in 24 hours

Topical Applications

Calamine lotion – Mild sunburn / minor skin conditions

Sudocrem – Treatment of surface wounds, minor burns, incontinence dermatitis, sunburn.

Aqueous cream – Relief of symptoms of dry or chapped skin

Waspeze – Treatment of insect bites and stings

Burn relief spray – Relief from minor burns and scolds

Bonjela – Relief of pain and discomfort from mouth ulcers, denture sores

Sodium chloride irrigation solution (or tap water). – Eye irrigation

Vasoline – dry skin

This homely remedies list is suitable for most of the service users within the ************* organisation.

Should any item not be suitable it will be highlighted on the individuals care plan.
