Algorithmic challenges in mammalian whole genome assembly

Over the years, shotgun sequencing has been applied to genomic segments of increasing length. In the 1980s it was applied to plasmids, chloroplasts (Ohyama et al. 1986), viruses (Goebel et al. 1990), and cosmid clones of length roughly 40 kbp, which were considered to be the limit of this approach. ................
