Exam information and Prep:

The purpose of the x-ray examination is to show your child’s bladder and the urethra (the channel that urine passes through to the outside during urination). The exam shows the structure and the function of these organs. It is also useful in indicating whether urine refluxes (goes in the reverse direction) into the channels (ureters) that drain the kidneys.

In the pediatric radiology department, your child will be asked to change from his clothing into a gown. In the x-ray exam room, the technologist or the doctor will clean the perineum around the outlet of the urethra (the channel from the bladder) and insert a small thin tube (catheter) into your child’s urethra to the bladder. The bladder is then filled with a special liquid. The child is asked to urinate as x-ray pictures are taken.

After the x-ray pictures are finished, your child may resume normal activity. Occasionally, a child may experience a burning sensation when going to the bathroom in the 24 hours after the examination. Very rarely, the urine may have a reddish tinge; this is not serious and will not persist.

No specific preparation is required. Some children will be scheduled to have a kidney ultrasound examination before the cystourethrogram.

Please note that a Renogram with Lasix procedure cannot be done within 24 hours of a VCUG as it will interfere with the VCUG. The Renogram with Lasix is scheduled with our Nuclear Medicine department and can commonly be ordered by your physician in conjunction with this exam. A Renal/Kidney Ultrasound is another test commonly ordered by physicians in conjunction with a VCUG and can be done the same day. The Renal/Kidney Ultrasound will need to be scheduled with our Ultrasound Department for a time before the VCUG is scheduled for.

During the examination, your child will be attended by the x-ray technologist and radiologist.

One parent (who cannot be pregnant) may be allowed in the room as permitted by the radiologist. Additional children will need to remain in the waiting room with another parent or adult.
