How to Renew Your Driver's License in Texas

Eligibility Check Driver's License Renewal

Before you can renew your license, you must meet certain eligibility requirements based on your application method.

Online, by Phone or by Mail

To renew your license online, by phone or by mail, you must meet the following requirements:

You completed the renewal process in person last time.

You have a Class C, M, or CM license that is not revoked or suspended. You have a license that expires in less than two years or has been expired for less than two years. You are at least 18 years of age but younger than 79 years of age You have no physical or mental changes that now affect your driving abilities

You have no warrants or unpaid tickets on record. You already have your Social Security Number (SSN) on file with the Department of Public Safety (DPS). You are a U.S. citizen. You have your current driver's license or audit number from the card.

In Person You may be required to renew your driver's license in person so you can take a new photo and complete a vision exam.

You cannot renew your license if it is suspended or revoked.

To renew in person, you cannot owe penalty fees and your license cannot be expired for more than two years. You can check your license status online before attempting to renew in person.

What You Need Your current driver's license A printer for your temporary driver's license and payment receipt The last four digits of your SSN A valid credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover or American Express) for the $25 renewal fee

Steps to Take 1. Log in to the online system using your

driver's license number, date of birth, the last four digits of your SSN and your audit number.

2. Select "Renew."

3. Provide the information requested.

4. Select optional items, such as donations or voter registration, if needed.

5. Review the confirmation screen. 6. Provide payment for the $25 renewal fee. 7. Print your temporary driver's license and

receipt. 8. Receive renewed license by mail in two to

three weeks. 9. Invalidate and destroy previous license.

By-Phone Driver's License Renewal

Steps to Take 1. Call 1-866-DL RENEW (1-866-357-3639).

2. Provide the information requested through the automated phone system.

3. Provide payment information for the $25 renewal fee.

4. Receive renewed license by mail in two to three weeks.

5. Invalidate and destroy previous license.

What You Need Your driver's license renewal notice or renewal application (Form DL-43) Check or money order for the $25 renewal fee

Steps to Take 1. Fill out the renewal notice or mail-in

application.

2. Complete all other necessary steps, as outlined on the renewal notice.

3. Submit the application or completed notice and payment to the address on the renewal notice or:
