EdGCM 2 - Iowa State University

Version: EdGCM 2.5

Date: 11/15/05

OPERATING SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

* Windows 2000 or Windows XP SP2

* MacOS X 10.3 (Panther) or MacOX X 10.4 (Tiger)

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Installation instructions are available on-line. The manual for EVA is available on-line. The manual included in the EdGCM Installer contains many references to Panoply that are out of date. The on-line documentation supersedes the included PDF documentation.

WHAT IS NEW in EdGCM 2.5:

A new scientific visualization application, EVA 1.1, is integrated with EdGCM. It provides an integrated package of plotting software that produces one and two dimensional images. Plots produced by EVA include: latitude-longitude maps, latitude-altitude vertical cross-sections, time series plots, and zonal average line plots. EVA is a user-friendly interface, built on top of the widely used scientific visualization software, that allows EdGCM users to create images of all EdGCM climate model output.

UPGRADE INSTRUCTIONS:

Upgrading from EdGCM 2.4.1 to EdGCM 2.5:

An updater is avalible from EdGCM version 2.4.1 to version 2.5.

Upgrading from EdGCM 2.3 to EdGCM 2.5:

EdGCM 2.5 includes an update to the NASA/GISS GCM, thus we are not distributing an automated Update utility for 2.3. However, if you have simulations that you ran using EdGCM 2.3 and want to transfer them to 2.5 follow these simple steps:

1. Open EdGCM 2.3.

2. Choose Simulation Library from the Window menu and select the runs you want to move.

3. Click the Export button and choose a name and location to save the file.

4. Quite EdGCM 2.3 and open EdGCM 2.5 (obviously you need to have installed v2.5 first)

5. Once again, choose Simulation Library from the Window menu

6. Choose Import from the Library menu.

7. In the dialog box that appears click the Import button and quit EdGCM when the import finishes.

8. Move the Output folder from the EdGCM 2.3 folder to the EdGCM 2.5 folder, replacing the existing, but empty, Output folder. You can also copy individual Run folders from one Output folder to another.

KNOWN PROBLEMS in EdGCM 2.5:

1. We recommend that you NOT leave the GCM running on a Windows laptop unattended. We have found that some Pentium laptops have difficulty dissipating heat and may shutdown (hibernate) without warning causing the climate model to crash. This does not appear to harm the laptop, but can corrupt GCM output files.

2. Windows XP SP2 will warn you about security when you use Panoply from EdGCM. You should follow the Windows Firewall advice and Keep Blocking Panoply. Blocking Panoply will not cause any problems for EdGCM but will prevent the warning from appearing again.

3. MacOS X users read the special warning in the file "Warning to Mac OS X Users.rtfd", which is installed in the folder "EdGCM 4D" on your desktop.

4. EdGCM will work as described on MacOS X using the default HFS+ disk format. We do not recommend using EdGCM on UFS or case sensitive HFS formatted disks as some bugs may appear.

5. A few PCs have exhibited strange behavior when running long simulations. The behavior has been traced to faulty cooling or CPUs and replacing the computer has fixed the problem. Macs appear to have sufficient cooling to avoid similar problems with long simulations.

VERSION HISTORY

EdGCM 2.5

1. Includes EVA 1.1 as an integrated scientific visualization application.

2. Preferences to switch between EVA and Panoply/Excel.

3. Trend menu in Setup Simulations to view trends after a run has been started.

4. Repair Permissions utility for MacOS X.

5. Window with logo remains visible in the background on MacOS X for easier switching between EdGCM and other programs.

6. Fixed the deep ocean file so it no longer causes crash on many computers with Pentium 4 processors.

7. Changed the web menu to connect to the new website.

EdGCM 2.4.1

1. Fixed a bug where maps and vertical could produce incorrect NetCDF files if you unchecked seasons or quarters.

2. Creates NetCDF files that contain more metadata.

3. Spotlight Importer for MacOS X 10.4 (Tiger) that allows NetCDF files produced by maps and vertical to be searched.

4. SuSpect 1.6 contains many fixes and the ability to open any file as a text file. SuSpect now defaults to not do a case sensitive search.

5. Panoply 1.6.2 fixes many bugs and features improved interpolation.

EdGCM 2.4

1. Fixed a series of bugs in the model that caused it to crash under certain circumstances. All new or duplicated runs will use the new version of the model.

2. Fixed a bug where solar trends would crash after a month.

3. Fixed a bug where Analyze Output did not see the full length of runs unless you quit EdGCM 4D.

4. Changed new and duplicate to reset the Run ID, and owner.

5. Runs are locked after the run starts, so you don't have to unlock runs as often.

6. Panoply 1.5.1 allows you to plot regional maps in addition to global maps.

7. Fixed a bug where the current date was not always updated when you switched runs.

8. Fixed a bug where Cleanup didn't always work if you didn't explicitly pick years.

9. The version of EdGCM is displayed in the toolbar in Windows like on the Mac.

10. The search field is not selected by default in the toolbar.

11. Fixed a bug where Run IDs could be empty or a single character, which caused the database to be corrupted.

12. Fixed an international date bug in Setup Oceans.

13. You can now run multiple versions of the model from EdGCM. The model version is accessible from the Power tools section of Setup Simulations.

14. Fixed some cosmetic bugs with the Import dialog box.

EdGCM 2.3.5

1. The model will start in languages that use comma as a decimal separator instead of a period. Previous versions of EdGCM crashed in French, German, Chinese, etc.

2. Fixed a bug where changing the year for observed greenhouse gas values would reset the solar luminosity to the 1958 value.

3. Solar trends are now handled properly.

4. Added an error message to notify the user if they try to set a date for ocean/atmosphere flux collection that is prior to the start date of the run. Previously, this caused the GCM to crash.

5. The maximum mixed-layer depth in the ocean for the Snowball Earth experiment was changed to 2000 meters so it would not freeze solid during the experiments.

6. Can now import multiple runs successfully and replace existing runs with imported ones.

7. Fixed compile of Average (SumAndPD) for Mac and Windows.

EdGCM 2.3.4 (first publicly distributed version)

1. Fixed a few climate variables in the "Map" list of the Analyze Output window that were not working properly. Variables effected showed all zeros in the resulting data arrays and included Maximum and Minimum Surface Air Temperature and Ocean Mixed-Layer Temperature.

2. Viewable files in the Analyze Output window should appear immediately after they are created on all computers. There has been some trouble getting slower computers to show the viewable files immediately. If you are having problems, click on the run number in the run list a second time and they will appear.

3. 4th Dimension 2003.5 caused EdGCM to crash when the Image Browser was opened. Reverting to 4th Dimension 2003.4 fixes the problem. 4D, Inc. is working on this known bug and it should be fixed in the next release of 4th Dimension.

4. Panoply 1.4.4 plots images when you double-click on variables in the Datasets and Variables window.

EdGCM 2.3.3

1. Fixes a problem where newly created qflux files, for use with the predicted SST ocean, could not be found by the pop-up menus

2. Simulations can now be exported from a Windows PC and run on a Mac.

3. Fixes a problem with Ocean Fluxes on G4 Macs.
