Title: Padnos College of Engineering and Computing Graduate Advising Assistant

Terms:

This is a 20-hour per week, full-year position. This assistantship is open to all full-time graduate students in the College Student Affairs Leadership (CSAL) program. This assistantship will begin fall semester, with the opportunity for renewal each semester. This assistantship includes a tuition waiver of 24 hours and a yearly stipend of $12,000.

If renewed, summer appointments are required to assist with freshman, transfer, and international advising and registration.

The assistantship requires activities on day(s) in the week(s) before each semester begins as assigned (IE, Final Registration or Transfer Advising and Registration).

Position Description/Responsibilities:

1. Academic Advising (75%)

a. Advising

• Meet with prospective and current PCEC students to help them understand career opportunities, plan their academic program, and choose appropriate co-curricular activities

• Provide advising to transfer students interested PCEC programs to improve their academic success and retention, as well as providing relevant information on career opportunities and job market availability

• Make personal contact following the communication timeline with transfer and pre-secondary admit students over the first-year monitoring students’ academic performance until secondary admission

• Learn requirements for majors and minors in PCEC, including course sequencing and prerequisite requirements in order to teach to new students

• Refer students to appropriate faculty, staff or university support programs

• Utilize university software in support of advising activities

b. Advising and Registration

• Prepare Transfer Advising/Registration (TSAR) materials each semester and communicate with prospective students ahead of their registration date; participate in TSAR days and presentations

• Participate in and perform post-summer First Year Advising/Registration (FYAR) review for each student advised and scheduled

• Teach new students about university, major, and degree requirements

• Teach individual students the registration process during advising and registration sessions

• Perform follow-up with students that are below full-time status and looking to sign up for additional courses

2. Outreach (25%)

• Assist the Advising team in keeping social media sites up to date, researching and implementing new methods of communication to inform the PCEC students

• Participate in PCEC K-12 Outreach activities in support of the College and University

• Make recommendations to Advising team for improving student services

• Develop and assist in planning appropriate undergraduate programs and activities pertaining to advising, student success, campus resources, etc.

Learning Outcomes:

• To enhance the graduate assistant’s academic experience by providing an opportunity to increase his or her knowledge of student development as well as the functions of university systems and services

• To improve listening and problem-solving skills, especially in regards to undergraduate student needs

• To develop and refine professional written and oral communication skills through interactions with undergraduate students, faculty and staff

• To become knowledgeable in the process of program evaluation and assessment

Qualifications:

• Enrollment as a degree-seeking student in a graduate program at GVSU for a minimum of nine credit hours for both fall and winter semester, and six credit-hours in the spring/summer semester (preference given to students in the CSAL M.Ed. program)

• Ability to analyze information, develop meaningful plans and follow-through on implementation

• Knowledge of Grand Valley’s policies and procedures, or willingness/ability to learn

• Familiarity with Grand Valley’s Student Academic Support Resources, or willingness/ability to learn

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook email

• Proven record of efficiency, accuracy, detail-orientation and strong organizational skills

• Willingness to adhere to office requirements for attendance and punctuality

• Problem-solving orientation

• Proven record of ability to meet deadlines

• Valid United States driver’s license required

Work Station:

This position will hold office hours on the Pew and Allendale Campus. Office space will be provided in both the Eberhard Center and Mackinac Hall. In order to accommodate this arrangement, a laptop and/or desktop will be provided.

Orientation/Supervision:

Sara Wheeler, PCEC Advising Center Director, will provide coordination of graduate assistant assignments. This will include orientation activities during the first week and ongoing communication and training regarding university and unit procedures, PCEC curriculum and processes, and mentorship. Performance will be assessed through observation of the Advising Center Director as well as PCEC advisor input and mentorship, along with graduate assistant feedback regarding the assistantship. An end of semester debriefing will be employed to review the benefit of the assignments to the graduate assistants and the staff and faculty members being assisted.
