ReadyGEN Frequently Asked Questions

ReadyGEN Frequently Asked Questions

What is ReadyGEN?

ReadyGEN is a K-5 ELA core curriculum that was built expressly for CCLS in partnership with the New York City Department of Education and with input from Student Achievement Partners. ReadyGEN combines the requirements of New York City, perfectly aligned content, and strong teacher support into a cohesive program that addresses today’s educational priorities. ReadyGEN is organized around units of study in Science and Social Studies that feature topically-related text sets.

Is ReadyGEN a basal?

No, ReadyGEN is not a basal. ReadyGEN is a comprehensive K-5 core curriculum ELA program organized around units of study in Science and Social Studies that feature topically-related text sets. Students will be reading authentic pieces of literature, such as novels, trade books and shorter, related texts of multiple genres. Full instruction in the ReadyGEN Teacher Guide’s will support achieving the ‘shifts’ of the CCLS: close reading of text at appropriate complexities across grades, and engaging is the task of citing text evidence in response to text-based questions that are of high order. There is no student anthology comprised of combined skill and literature, as one would find in a basal offering. Teachers will have the benefit of full instructional support for both whole and small group around reading, writing, speaking and listening, with appropriate scaffolding for students below, on and above grade level.

Does ReadyGEN have Leveled Readers?

ReadyGEN is designed to deliver on-level narrative and informational text worthy of close reading to serve the tenets of the CCLS. The instructional planner includes time for both guided and independent reading, where it is suggested school and individual classroom libraries be utilized to provide the range of readabilities that will serve diverse learners. ReadyGEN Leveled Reader Libraries will also be available as an add-on option to the program. Specialized support for both Students with Disabilities and English language Learners is also a part of the teacher array.

Are ReadyGEN topics aligned with NYS Science & Social Studies standards?

The units of study focus on Science and Social Studies standards-based topics and use text sets to systematically build knowledge around topics for sustained periods of time. Science standards were pulled directly from the Next Generation Science Standards, while Social Studies came from the NY state standards and national social studies standards. While connections to the standards will be found throughout instruction, complete standards coverage isn’t intended.
