2. What are the vision, mission and goals/objectives of the department? Identify the learning outcomes for each program in the department. Department Mission Statement

The Respiratory Care Program is committed to the development of competent respiratory care practitioners and sleep technologists through academic and clinical learning to master requisite healthcare competencies, stimulate professional growth through scientific curiosity, and promote leadership skill development. The programs are directed toward developing critical-thinking skills in preparation for respiratory care and sleep technology consulting and leadership roles in various healthcare delivery systems. The curriculum is structured to foster habits of research, continuing education, and professional skill growth.

Department Vision and Goals

The Department of Respiratory Care will strive to produce quality graduates who meet the expectations of the communities of interest served by the program, to maintain an excellent national reputation, and to be a leader in innovative educational endeavors in the profession. As a means to accomplish the vision, the Respiratory Care Departmental Goals include:

• Updating the curriculum as national practice standards of care evolve

• Maintaining external accreditation by meeting the new essentials set by CoARC to include polysomnography theory and clinical practice

• Recruiting and maintaining racial, gender, and ethnic diversity in both the faculty and students

• Encouraging faculty to pursue professional development through participation in specialty advanced credentialing and professional continuing education

• Encouraging faculty and students to participate in professional organizations and community service projects

• Increasing external funding for the university, college, and department through grant activities

• Utilizing the Texas State Sleep Center to meet the educational and research needs of the students and faculty while meeting the diagnostic and treatment needs of the Texas State campus faculty, staff and student body

• Utilizing the Texas State Sleep Center to meet the sleep diagnostic and treatment needs of San Marcos and the surrounding region as it pertains to education and research

• Establishing articulation agreements with community colleges and associate degree respiratory care programs throughout Texas

• Encourage students to pursue graduate education to advance competency in education, research management, and professional specialties

Goals/Objectives: The goals and objectives for the Respiratory Care Program for the 2002-03 academic year are summarized below: Please refer to Attachment 3 for the University Goal Report-Department Level, the current strategic plan for the RC Program and the RC Annual Report. Also included with these attachments are RC Current Goals and Standards reported in the format required for the CoARC Report of Current Status. This last document includes a column "Evaluation Method" which outlines the methods for evaluating each of the Standards.

The goals and objectives for the RC Program are as follows:

Goal: Enhance quality and prestige

Objective: Attract and retain high quality faculty

Strategy: Encourage and support faculty development

Strategy: Encourage and support faculty research activities

Objective: Hire one additional faculty member

Strategy: Recruit qualified faculty for university position

Strategy: Secure external funding for competitive salary

Objective: Develop distance-learning programs

Strategy: Develop contractual relationship with remote clinical

sites

Strategy: Secure external funding for hardware and

transmission costs

Objective: Support development of rural pulmonary

rehabilitation and asthma clinics

Strategy: Develop contractual relationships with rural hospitals

Strategy: Apply for funding grants

Objective: Maintain accreditation

Strategy: Maintain current accreditation standards

Strategy: Match current accreditation standards with

university goals

Goal: Increase retention & success of students

Objective: Attract and retain high ability students

Strategy: Support & encourage student involvement in RC

student & professional organizations

Objective: Maintain alumni tracking system

Strategy: Continue to build database of RC alumni and update with

names and addresses with assistance from professional organizations

Objective: Establish articulation agreement with physical therapy graduate program

Strategy: Develop a track for BSRC students to successfully complete admission

requirements for MSPT program

Objective: Maintain large applicant pool from which to select competent students

Strategy: Maintain current recruitment program

Strategy: Contact high school students with interest in health professions and

Texas State undecided majors with interest in health professions

Objective: Secure funding for two students to attend the American Association for

Respiratory Care national convention each year

Strategy: Obtain funding through M&O, special funding, or fund raising

Goal: Promote ethnic, gender, and culture diversity in the SWT community

Objective: The number of graduates identified as minority, or disadvantaged will

increase annually until at least 20% of graduates are from a minority group

Strategy: Participation in recruitment programs targeting diverse student groups

Objective: Invite minority respiratory care practitioners to participate in lecturing to RC

Majors

Strategy: Target minority practitioners and health professionals to lecture as

guests or present in department sponsored seminars

Goal: Increase Texas State’s leadership and presence in the community

Objective: Provide development opportunities for community respiratory therapist

Strategy: Faculty will provide continuing education programs

Strategy: Faculty will provide consultation for community hospitals

Objective: Participate in community health assessment programs

Strategy: Faculty will provide cardiopulmonary function screening to the public

Strategy: Faculty will work collaboratively with other health care professionals at

community health fairs

Objective: Continue to operation the Texas State Sleep Center in the College of Health Professions with the purpose of education, research, and providing diagnostic services to the campus and San Marcos surrounding communities of interest.

Strategy: Maintain current national accreditation through the American Academy for Sleep Medicine and provide educational clinical opportunities for RC majors and polysomnography certificate students, encourage faculty research in sleep medicine, maintain a diagnostic presents in the San Marcos medical community as a service provider.
