RESEARCH PAPER

1984 Research

Introduction and Prompt

• Refer to the 1984 instructions sheet to review the background information, purpose for the paper, and paper topics. As seniors, you are expected to understand how to write a research paper. It is your responsibility to seek additional help if you need it.

• Format and Argumentation Overview. All requirements are contained in the rubric.

o As a reminder, your paper must be in correct 7th Edition MLA format and use black, double-spaced 12 pt. Times New Roman font.

o Your thesis statement should be the last sentence of your introductory paragraph and include two or three arguments in the order of how they are presented in the paper.

o You are required to have ample direct quotations to support your arguments. They must be correctly integrated into your sentences. It is a requirement to have a balanced mixture of direct quotations, paraphrased material, and summarized material from your sources.

o Your paper must be 4 full pages in length, not including the works cited page. Your paper will not be read beyond 4.5 pages.

o In addition to your main source, the novel 1984, you are required to include exactly two outside sources in your paper. You are expected to evaluate the credibility and effectiveness of your outside sources. Therefore, there are no requirements to the types of outside sources you may include. Keep in mind that your source selection will have a large impact on your grade because your choices reflect your ability to conduct research. While an annotated bibliography is not required for this assignment, it is a good idea to consult the sample I have posted online and use it as a tool for source evaluation.

• Grading

o The paper grade will count twice, which means that the grade you will see will be out of 200. I reiterate important dates below. See the rubric for a clear picture of how you will be evaluated. Take the time to understand the rubric.

• Tips:

o Read the novel!

o Research your subject first. Gather information and study your subject before you form your opinion. You might be surprised by what you discover.

o Organize your information using index cards or ISP sheets (available online). Both allow you to group your information by source or argument. The ISP sheets are Word documents that allow you to type in your information, which may work better for you.

o Stay on top of deadlines.
