Ethics and Biosafety Approval Processes at Macquarie University

All research involving human participants, animals and/or biological agents must have ethics approval prior to commencing.

This guideline is to help you to ensure you have received the appropriate approval to conduct your research here at Macquarie University. You will be required to provide evidence of ethics and/or biosafety approval in order to submit your thesis for review and in any publications that arise from the research.

Animal Research Ethics Approval

Ethical review and approval is required before the commencement of any research involving the use of animals, as defined by the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes 8th edition (2013).

The type of Animal Ethics application required depends on where and under which institution the activity is being conducted, and what (if any) other ethics approvals are in place. The flow chart below outlines the choices. For more information on how to submit an application, contact the animal ethics secretariat via email (animal.ethics@mq.edu.au) or phone (02) 9850 7758.

Human Research Ethics Approval

Biosafety Approval

Projects conducted at Macquarie University which involve the use or storage of biological agents will require biosafety review. The specific approval process and forms you require will vary depending on the risk group classification of the organism and the GMO Dealing class. The Macquarie University IBC reviews research proposals involving any of the below categories. Work involving these categories must not commence until IBC approval has been received.

• Microorganisms classified as risk group 2 and above

• GMOs

• SSBAs

• Agents requiring quarantine containment

• Animals with the potential to carry zoonotic agents classified as risk group 2 and above

• Human and animal clinical and diagnostic specimens

Work involving risk group 1 microorganisms (including animals with the potential to carry risk group 1 zoonoses), animal or human tissue samples, or invertebrates is a notification process. Work involving the use of animals will also require animal ethics approval.

Please visit Gene Technology and Biosafety for further information on submitting a new application to the IBC.
