|6[pic] |BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK. |
| | |
| |6.1 NEED FOR THE STUDY: |
| |The “metabolic syndrome” (MetS) is a clustering of components that reflects over nutrition, sedentary lifestyles, and resultant |
| |excess adiposity. It includes combination of abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and elevated blood pressure |
| |and is associated with other co-morbidities including the pro-thrombotic state, pro-inflammatory state, non alcoholic fatty liver|
| |disease and reproductive disorders.1 |
| |The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome is increasing rapidly not only in the developed world but also in the developing |
| |nations2. There is a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome in future as increase in the prevalence of obesity, increases other |
| |risk factors. The recent 2- fold increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) and a 5- to 6- fold increased |
| |risk of developing type 2 diabetes have implications for public health and also for healthcare costs. 3,4 |
| |The goals of the clinical management of metabolic syndrome are to reduce the risk of clinical atherosclerotic disease and type 2 |
| |diabetes. Effective treatment strategies include weight reduction, life style modification, exercise, diet modification and the |
| |use of pharmacological agents to control individual risk factors in some individuals.3 |
| |Studies have highlighted that life style modification and weight reduction are the first line of intervention to prevent and |
| |overcome metabolic syndrome and its ill effects. 5,6 Therefore, all patients with metabolic syndrome or those who have the risk |
| |factors, should be encouraged to lose weight (if overweight or obese), modify their diets, and increase physical activities as |
| |primary therapy to reduce metabolic risk factors (eg: lower blood pressure, improve lipid levels, and improve insulin |
| |resistance.) 3,6,7 |
| |Physical fitness is one of the major components to a good and healthy living. The physical activity patterns determine the level |
| |of physical fitness. Having a sedentary lifestyle reduces the physical activity to a great extent and is a reason for poor cardio|
| |respiratory fitness. Therefore it is of prime importance to know the fitness level of this |
| | |
| |Sedentary population and also correlate it with the presence of the parameters of metabolic syndrome. |
| |This study mainly focuses on this population as religious priests and nuns who mainly are restricted or assigned to perform |
| |household or community rituals usually, are less active and lack leisure time physical activities. It is seen that religious |
| |people usually follow a sedentary life 5 yrs post ordination as their work is restricted to community living and spiritual |
| |activities. Studies done in the past have proven incidence of diabetes and disturbed parameters of lipid profile among religious |
| |priests and nuns. Stress also is another evident factor present in this population.10,11 Also, religious people play a major |
| |role in public awareness and welfare. Considering them as the subject for study would intend to educate them, firstly, about |
| |metabolic syndrome and its risk factors and this would in return, is hypothesized to be a media of community education. |
| |Hence this study will take into account primarily their physical activity level and correlate it with the occurrence of metabolic|
| |syndrome. This correlation would help to improve quality of life and reduce risk factors leading to cardiovascular disease. |
| | |
| |RESEARCH QUESTION: |
| |Does lack of physical activity correlate with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome? |
| | |
| |HYPOTHESIS: |
| |There is a positive correlation between physical activity and health related risk |
| |factors. |
| |Religious people have reduced physical activity, therefore increased risk for metabolic syndrome. |
| | |
| |NULL HYPOTHESIS: |
| |There is no correlation between the health related risk factors and reduced physical activity, which may be a cause of MetS among|
| |religious priests and nuns. |

| |OPERATIONAL DEFINITION: |
| |Mangalore Diocese: The diocese of Mangalore comprises of the civil districts of South Kannada and Udupi in Karnataka and Kasargod|
| |in Kerala. |

| |Physical activity: physical activity is defined as any bodily movements produced by skeletal muscles that require energy |
| |expenditure. (WHO) |
| | |
| |Priests: are the co-workers, who have as their first task “to preach the gospel of God to all men” in keeping with Lord’s faith.|
| |They are “heralds of faith” who draw new disciples to Christ. (Catechism of |
| |the Catholic Church) |
| | |
| |Nuns: are the sacred people, who establish living in the world through prayer, penance, service of her brethren and apostolic |
| |activities, according to the state of life and spiritual gifts given to them. |
| |(Catechism of the Catholic Church) |
| | |

| | |
| | |
| |Metabolic syndrome: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the proposed study would be performed according to the IDF criteria |
| |(2005). The parameters used to define IDF criterion are as follows: |
| |Clinical measure International Diabetes Federation (IDF)2 |
| |Body weight waist circumference ≥94 cm (men) or ≥80 cm (women), with ethnicity-specific values, plus any 2 of the |
| |following |
| |Lipids Triglycerides ≥150 mg/dl or triglycerides treatment HDL-C ................
