ASHLEY, Stephen John Thompson (1963-2003) At his residence in Toronto, 11 Sept. 03, the loved son of John and Gwen Ashley of Amherstview; the loved brother of Kim (Marvin) Solowey of Hamilton, Linda (Norman) Hall of Amherstview and Elizabeth (Dean) A llport of Glenburnie; the loved uncle of Jonathan and Kristen Solowey, Christopher and Tara Hall, & Kylie and Amber Allport. For thirty-eight of his forty years, Stephen enjoyed living life actively "on the edge"; his pre-school years in Orillia and Elgin (with three other busy boys); his early primary school (L.G. Lorriman) in Thorold with a very patient teacher and a principal who strapped when girls mittens were stomped into the slush; his public school (Burleigh Hill) in St. Catharines where his teachers were specialists who taught rotary classes and the principal brooked no swearing or bullying; his secondary school (Sir Winston Churchill) in St. Catharines where he was not a passive pupil and faced an experienced, middle-aged staff (one was his father) who expected excellence to be pursued... as Grantland Rice wrote...it's how you played the game; his university (Queen's, like his father and grandfather before him) where he pursued Commerce while taking extra arts courses and wrote as a football reporter for the Queen's Journal; his post university years were based in Toronto as an Executive Searcher ("Headhunter") ultimately forming a partnership with Sharon Neelin which flourished until 9/11. He relaxed with Michael Rubino (an ex-SWC Bulldog) and Tom Neelin (also an ex-SWC Bulldog). Stephen became an accomplished athlete from an early age; soccer, hockey, baseball, and finally Bulldog Football at SWC, where he experienced the elation of victories and the agony of defeats. Later, he became a talented downhill skier, from Mont Tremblant to Whistler. He was passionate in his sports, business or academics. Summers at Limerick Lake, near Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, Cousins and other young folk, saw him proficient in semi-wilderness skills. In later secondary school the world of work intruded (he was an Oiler on a Laker on the Great Lakes-St Lawrence). Stephen was active in Sunday School, Cubs and attended the United Church in Elgin and Thorold where he was active as a big brother. His conscience matured early. He developed a critical mind and was self driven to succeed. Seldom was he lacking in wit, humour or satire. Stephen was perhaps too much of a perfectionist and workaholic. At the request of the family, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A Private Memorial Service will be held on Friday, 26 Sept. 03 at the Scotland Funeral Home, 27 Main Street, Elgin. The Rev J.H. Seeley will officiate, assisted by Marion Seeley as an organist. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations made to the Children's Wish Foundation or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. Stephen Ashley will be missed.

SCOTT, STUART Beverly (Bev) Passed away Friday, September 19th, peacefully and at home with his family. After surviving through many challenges, he has now moved on. Stuart is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jeanne Margaret Scott, who immigrated to Canada after World War II as a war bride. Stuart was a dashing pilot with the RCAF, Jeanne worked at her mother's pub. Stuart was an active Queen's University Alumnus, boosting the football team for several decades. Fort Henry played a large part in Stuart's life. He was an historian and a watchman at the Fort while studying for his law degree, later, he was the first "Pioneer" in the guard, sporting a full beard and white leather apron. His law career spanned many avenues and he finally settled on helping immigrants, practising law in Kingston up until this month. He was 83. His two sons, Greg Scott of Kingston and JC (Cam) Scott of Victoria, B.C., were with their mother at his side and will remember their dad with fondness. His four grandchildren were all able to say goodbye to their Grand-Dad on the morning of his passing. They will miss him over the next door fence where he lived. Close family friends have come forward to offer solace to Jeanne and to remember Stuart as the kind hearted "Grumpy Old Guy" that he was. We'll miss you Stuart. SIMMS, Sidney 1910-2003 On Saturday, September 27, 2003, Sidney passed away at Carewest Signal Pointe Nursing Home in Calgary at the age of 93 years. Sidney was predeceased by his wife Alice (who died March 8, 1996). Sidney leaves to mourn his daughter Beverley (Jim) Cowley and his son Jim (Heather) Simms; grandchildren David (Lorie) Cowley, Susan (Trent) Threadkell, Denise Spenard, Jeff (Jill) Simms, Tyler Simms, Michael Simms, Sarah Lessard; and seven great-grandchildren. Sidney was born in Brighton, England on August 12, 1910. He grew up in Brighton during World War I and 1918 he lost his father, who served in the British Army in Mesopotamia. His widowed mother brought Sidney to Canada in 1924, and his brother Bill came the following yea r. They lived in Montreal, Quebec where Sidney studied graphic arts and learned the printing trade. Sidney was a generous person with a good sense of humour. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, travelling and taking photos. He has always loved animals. In 1935, Sidney married Alice Armstrong. Two years later they moved from Montreal to Granby, Quebec, where they lived for forty-one years. Sidney worked for the Granby Leader Mail for several years before he started his own business "Simms Printing Company Ltd". Sidney and Alice, with their two children were active and well respected in the Granby community. Sidney became a prominent businessman who participated in many organizations, including Kiwanis Club, Granby Manufacturers Association, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, and the Boy Scouts Association. Sidney and Alice were both supportive and active at St. George's Anglican Church. Sidney, as Rector's Warden of Archdeacon I.M. Lidstone was involved in Synod in the Montreal diocese. Sidney also became a Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge in Granby. Printing was Sidney's passion for over fifty years of his life. With courage, determination and Alice's hands-on support, the business he began in a three car garage and the "dining room" bindery grew into a significant printing and publishing facility. The beginning wasn't easy with Sidney selling and producing orders while Alice helped with bindery operations and bookkeeping. Sidney believed that the key to success was keeping at the cutting edge of modern printing technology. He led the way as printing advanced from the use of the linotype through the computer technology. Some employees he trained stayed local to him throughout his career moving with him to "Payette an d Simms Printing and Publishing Company" in Montreal in the 1970's. In 1978, Sidney and Alice moved from Granby to Kingston, Ontario, where they made new friends and enjoyed semi-retirement. Their contribution to the Kingston community included volunteer work. In 1991, Sidney and Alice moved to Calgary to be near their children and grandchildren. Sidney and Alice had been married sixty years when Alice passed away in 1996. Sidney spent the last three years of his life residing at Carewest Signal Pointe Nursing Home. The family thanks the caregivers for the loving care they gave to Sidney in his "final home". Sidney will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends. Funeral Services will be held at Leyden's Funeral Home "Chapel of Remembrance" (17th Avenue and 2nd Street SW) on Thursday, October 2, 2003 at 11:00 a.m., with a reception and interment to follow. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made in Sidney's memory directly to St. George's Anglican Church (130 rue Principale, Box 1062, Granby, Quebec, J2G 9G6) or to Salvation Army. To e-mail expressions of sympathy: leydens@ subject heading: Sidney Simms. Arrangements entrusted to LEYDEN'S FUNERAL HOME, Calgary. Telephone (403)228-4 422.
