Residence Inn introduced the term "extended-stay" in 1975 when the first Residence Inn opened to serve the needs of business travelers seeking apartment-style accommodations for their longer stays. In 1987, Marriott International purchased the 96-property Residence Inn Corporation and developed Residence Inn by Marriott into the nation's largest extended-stay hotel brand.
