What are the benefits of membership?

There are a number of benefits you receive as an AARC member, so that if you are interested in continuing education, information, tools to help you on the job, or networking with other members, there is something for you.

We find many of our members take advantage of the free online courses that are available over the internet for members only. We have many offerings for free or low cost that help you earn the continuing education you need for your state license.

Our two publications -- Respiratory Care and AARC Times magazine – are available to you as a member.

Respiratory Care is the science journal. It provides you with clinical information and the most reliable scientific information in the profession. There are original research studies and reviews of equipment and methods of treatment.

AARC Times is our news and feature magazine. News about Washington, trends in the profession, important projects and activities of interest to respiratory therapists are covered here as well as stories on interesting people and events around the country related to respiratory care.

When you receive your member number you have access to the Members Only area of our Internet web site at . A very helpful and highly used area of the Members site is our Help Line where you can post questions of a clinical or professional nature and have the benefit of input from other members from across the country. This really brings the networking aspects of association membership to life. Plus there are all kinds of resource materials that we make available to members at your fingertips.

CRCE Transcript -- another important feature and benefit of AARC membership is the transcript that tracks your continuing education activities. We provide to you a record of the continuing education activities you were involved in over the course of the year for any AARC CRCE accredited courses. If you live in a licensed state, this is a valuable benefit, because this transcript can be turned over to your state licensure agency when it is time for you to report your continuing education credits.

Discounts in the AARC Store help you save. More likely than not, you will have the need and opportunity to buy resource manuals, educational workbooks or DVDs on respiratory therapy topics. All of our products are discounted for members – t-shirts, items you purchase for health fairs, all of our books, individual study tools, etc.

Members pay less to attend AARC meetings. Even our annual International Respiratory Congress, Summer Forum and other educational seminars are discounted for members. The Congress is the largest respiratory show in the country. There are hundreds of exhibitors, representing virtually all of the respiratory products and services in the industry. There are four days of lectures covering all kinds of topics from clinical topics to professional trends, and there are just a lot of opportunities for you to get to meet and know other respiratory therapists from across the country that make it a very valuable experience.

Members make public relations and advocacy possible. The AARC is involved in many things that are important to you as a respiratory care professional. We have staff working exclusively on government affairs, and their work has paid off. We have an active media and public relations program, trying to get information and stories placed about the profession in the news media to increase public awareness of the profession. These are very important areas of activities for us. We cover the highlights in AARC Times every year, and you can view details on specific efforts under the Government Affairs page on the website.

There are a lot of ways you can participate in the development of the profession, network with your peers and save money.

• Access to Specialty Sections: you can join a specialty area of practice for an additional $15 or $20.

• As an active or associate member, some of your dues go back to your state society and you are automatically a member of your state. (Some state rules vary; sometimes to have to pay a higher fee to the state to get all the benefits of state membership)

• Insurance programs, credit card programs

I guess if you were to ask our members what benefits they most see in belonging to the AARC, they would say the information they receive from us through the publications and web site, but more importantly to some it’s the ability they have to influence their profession by supporting the government relations and public relations activities and to support the AARC’s work with other organizations, agencies and coalitions in setting standards for the profession.
