Assistant Principal/Athletic Director

TITLE: Assistant Principal/Athletic Director

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION: The Senior High School Assistant Principal provides professional leadership in organizing, administering, supervising, and evaluating a creative school program.

The Assistant Principal also serves as the Activities Director and coordinates school activities to avoid scheduling conflicts and ensure rewarding experiences for students. To accomplish these tasks the Activities Director must work closely with the staff and administration of U.S.D. No. 416, and with the staff of other school systems.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Building Principal and Superintendent

SUPERVISES: All building certified teaching staff and staff as assigned

PAYMENT RATE: According to Negotiated Salary with Board

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Be responsible for the operation, management and budgeting of athletics and related activities. All coaches of competitive sports from grades 7-12 are directly responsible to the assistant principal/activity director.

2. Responsible for the effectiveness of the overall program of athletics in the high school and middle school. Each coach is responsible for the effectiveness of his own particular sport.

3. Evaluates coaches and assistant coaches when requested to do so by the appropriate school principal.

4. Recommends items as building maintenance and repair as related to the athletic program, supervision of contests, change in schedules or coaches during the school year. These recommendations must be approved by the principal.

5. Responsible for the field house area whenever that facility is used by a high school group.

6. Schedules and supervises all athletic related activities, all sponsors or officials for athletic events and makes transportation and meal arrangements.

7. Has joint responsibility with the building principal and the superintendent for coaching assignments. All coaching assignments are necessarily or automatically tied to classroom positions.

8. Sets up rules and other regulations for the athletic department with the coaches.

9. Maintains a permanent file of yearly records in each sport.

10. Informs the public of coming athletic contests and the results of completed event.

11. Approves all athletic requisitions.

12. Sees that procedures comply with the policies of the Kansas State High School Activities Association and the policies of the board.

13. Checks the eligibility of all students participating in all interscholastic athletic contests.

14. Responsible for the extra duty roster and works with the director of secondary learning in assigning extra duty. Maintains accurate records of extra duty assignments.

15. Responsible for custodial help at night activities by informing the head custodian of the high school.

16. Works with the middle school principal to coordinate the middle and high school athletic programs.

17. Arranges for a high school administrator to be present or a high school teacher who will be designated as the official representative of the school at all athletic contests away from home which are considered spectator contests.

18. Works with superintendent on facility requests.

19. Supports the value of an education.

20. Supports the philosophy and mission of USD 416.

21. The assistant principal assists in overseeing safe and orderly schools.

a. Implements effective procedures for ensuring a safe and orderly learning environment.

b. Takes appropriate action when students exhibit emotionally/physically distressed behaviors.

c. Complies with, or monitors compliance with, all state and federal laws.

d. Implements board policies, rules and regulations.

20. The assistant principal assists the principal in ensuring student achievement for all student groups.

a. Collects and reports data on academic achievement by all student groups.

b. Monitors assessment of all students in basic skills areas.

c. Evaluates effectiveness of teaching materials, activities and approaches, and

d. Provides assistance when necessary.

21. The assistant principal assists the principal in building positive school/community relations.

a. Supports the school and district mission.

b. Promotes positive relationships between all persons in the school community.

c. Facilitates effective site councils.

22. The assistant principal assists the principal in leading the school in developing constructive student/adult relations.

a. Helps students develop responsibility for their conduct.

b. Cultivates staff behaviors that promote respect of authority, tolerance of diversity, and appreciation of each student’s potential.

22. The assistant principal assists the principal in overseeing effective and efficient staff performance.

a. Works with staff to develop and recommend standards for student learning.

b. Plans inservice activities based on student and staff needs and ensures they are effectively implemented.

c. Recruits, supervises and evaluates instructional staff in accordance with policy and law.

d. Interacts effectively with building/district personnel.

e. Assists with Evaluation of staff.

23. The assistant principal assists the principal in practicing responsible fiscal, facility, and resource management.

a. Organizes effective budget planning procedures.

b. Ensures building expenditures do not exceed the limits set forth by the board-approved budget.

c. Maintains building records and property.

24. The assistant principal models positive professional attributes.

a. Engages professional growth activities as directed.

b. Uses written and spoken language well.

c. Makes all necessary administrative decisions in a timely fashion.

d. Delegates supervision when appropriate.

e. Maintains office hours as determined by the superintendent.

25. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor and in accordance with the provisions of the USD 416 Board of Education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1. A valid building-level license issued by the Kansas State Board of Education.

2. Masters degree from an accredited a college/university in Educational Administration including hours in Athletic Administration.

3. Current Kansas State Teaching Certificate on file in the Central Office.

4. Minimum of three years certified teaching experience, preferably in a secondary school.

5. Coaching experience in interscholastic athletic and/or activities.

6. Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office (after employment offer is made).

7. Ability to work cooperatively and constructively with others, including the ability to communicate effectively with broad and diverse audiences.

8. Ability to handle a fast-paced, intense work environment.

9. Ability to manage job responsibilities and meet the established building outcomes.

10. Ability/willingness to work a daily schedule that could demand an extended workday.

11. Desire to continue career improvement.

12. Other alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

JOB LOCATION/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

1. Requires prolonged sitting or standing, and use of equipment including repetitive motions and computer eye fatigue.

2. Frequently works in noisy and crowded environments, with numerous interruptions.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Negotiated contract
