Current Position and Outreach Activities:

• September, 2008 – Present: Extension Associate Professor, Department of Rural Sociology.

• June, 2001 – Present: Associate Director, Community Food Systems and Sustainable Agriculture Program, University of Missouri Outreach and Extension. Serve as state specialist for community food systems and coordinate community food systems and sustainable agriculture programming across the state.

• September, 1998 – Present: Director, Food Circles Networking Project, University of Missouri Outreach and Extension. Coordinate an outreach program that links farmers and consumers together in a local food system, following the concept of a Food Circle.

Previous Positions

• October, 2000 – August, 2007: Extension Assistant Professor, Department of Rural Sociology.

• September 2003 – August 2005: Policy Fellow, Food and Society Policy Fellowship Program sponsored by the Thomas Jefferson Institute and the Institute for Agricultural and Trade Policy.

• September, 1997 – August, 1998: Post-doctoral fellow, Department of Rural Sociology at University of Missouri. Developed pilot program with Dr. William Heffernan to start rural welfare recipients as “new” farmers doing market gardening and direct marketing produce. Conducted an evaluation with Dr. Kenneth Pigg of a community-based process regarding land use in a rural county in mid-Missouri.

Special Research and Extension Projects:

2007 Co-coordinated Obesity Summit with Ann Cohen to address participatory ways of bridging nutrition, food systems and built environment in addressing obesity in Missouri.

2007 Assisted with coordinating, facilitating and planning follow-up meetings to the KC Healthy Food Policy Forum with the outcome of forming a KC Food Policy Council.

2007 Organized program for the KC Healthy Food Policy Forum which brought together 100 food system, nutrition, food service and agricultural experts to address federal far policy in the Kansas City area. The forum was hosted by KC Healthy Kids.

2005-2008 Participated as coordinating lead author on Chapter 2, the International Assessment of Agriculture Science and Technology for Development sub-global assessment for North America and Europe.

2005 Joined USDA-NCDC207 project, “Research and Education Support for the Renewal of Agriculture of the Middle.” This project conducts research that can inform business structure and public policies that will support agriculture of the middle type farms, and creates extension programs and materials for extension educators.

2005 Served as member of the design team for International Assessment of Agriculture Science and Technology for Development sub-global assessment for North America and Europe. This assessment is sponsored by the United Nations and World Bank. Was elected to serve as a delegate to the Integrated Global Design Team meeting for the overall Global Assessment.

2005 Organized an international network of researchers from 5 countries studying increasing consolidation in the global agrifood system. This informal network of researchers is identifying research opportunities and resources.

2003-2005 Serving on Steering Committee for Growing Growers in Kansas City, a SARE-funded project to develop capacity of farmers to serve the local foods market in Kansas City metro area. The project is in conjunction with Kansas State Extension.

2003-2004 Served as member of Task Force on Agriculture of the Middle. Convened by Frederick Kirschenmann, Leopold Center, Iowa State University and Frederic Buttel, University of Wisconsin-Madison.

2003 Served on Sustainable Agriculture Policy Roundtable, a group convened by the National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture and the Wallace Institute for Alternative Agriculture to promote dialogue to develop a comprehensive national policy for sustainable food and farming.

2002-2004 Served on steering committee of the Agribusiness Accountability Imitative, a group of farm, faith, environmental, consumer, and labor groups who are working to achieve a more sustainable food system. Helped plan conference held in October 2002 in Chicago, attended the first international spin-off conference May 1 2003 in the United Kingdom, and helped plan October 2003 conference in Kansas City.

2001-2003 Assisted two Missouri based cooperatives with marketing strategies and cooperative development. Both Ozark Mountain Pork, LLC, a natural pork cooperative developing an alliance with a grocery distributor, and Gateway Beef Cooperative, a small cooperative producing Certified Angus Beef – Prime for restaurant and upscale meat markets, are outgrowths of work with Family Farm Foods of Missouri.

2002 Assisted Clayton Farmers Market with strategic planning and facilitating meetings. August – October.

2001-2002 Collaborated with dairy producers from Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri interested in alternative markets for milk.

2000-2001 Worked to connect farmers, workers and consumers in new food system. Have worked with Family Farm Foods of Missouri in developing new prototype for beef production, processing and marketing. Working with AFL-CIO and labor union locals.
