Let’s Talk:

Next Club Meeting

3rd Saturday of the month – Breakfast at The Hometown Buffet on Manchester just east of 141, 8 am.

Editor Talkin’

Greetings to one and all.

Let me first apologize for the confusion regarding the June monthly meeting. I’m sorry for the confusion that I caused. I will try to be more careful how I communicate things and will try to double-check my information. Again please forgive me for my part in the confusion.

We had a good meeting at Hometown Buffet and got much accomplished I think.

We discussed the July 16th

Truck show. Our contact there has not kept up with her end of the bargain and not gotten us flyers as were promised. John is going to hound her this week and get some flyers. I will them mail them out to those without email and will email it to everyone else. We will then need to each make copies and spread the work quickly. Ramon is going to contact a friend who is a member of the Land of Giants 4x4 truck club to see if they would like to join us. So, when you get them make copies and pass them out to every one you know and those you come across.

I will not be able to attend this show. So, could someone take pictures and write up a short story about the event that I can put in the newsletter, please?

We have had nothing scheduled for August, but we decided what we are going to do as a club activity for that month. Here are the details. We are going to meet at Chuck-a-burger in St. Charles at 11am on August 12th.

[pic]

Then we plan to drive to the New Town development to drive through it and check it out.

[pic]

After this we will drive to Fast Lane Classic Cars and spend some time looking over what is there.

[pic]

It will be a busy day, but should be a lot of fun. So, make plans to join us and let’s have some fun. I will have map and directions for these places in the July newsletter.

Ramon reported on Weir Chevrolet’s interest in sponsoring our October Rally. He is going to see if they will pitch in a few bucks to cover the trophies and other incidentals. This might be the beginning of something good for our club.

Our lineup of trucks at Olde Tyme Picnic.

After breakfast/brunch, we headed out to Route 66 State Park. We got there and were able to park together. There were more trucks at this show than any show I have seen that wasn’t a truck only show. We got to see some old friends where were there with their trucks and made some new friends. I have scattered some pictures throughout this newsletter of this event and will put more on our website. The rains came and sent some of us home early. It was a great day and a great event to attend. They had many things there. They had a snow cone van there that started life as a Chevy delivery van. We are looking in to having them come to our October Rally.

[pic]

So, a lot is going on and we are having fun. Thanks to everyone for coming and participating.

Put the July Hooter show and/or the August St. Charles run on your calendar and come and join the fun and develop some friendships.

Respectfully submitted,

Mike Kelley

Boomer

This is the story about my truck and how it got it’s name.

The truck is a 1975 GMC C-15 shortbed stepside. It has the Serra Grande trim, a/c, T-400, 3.42:1 posi, and unique to this truck, a 454. It was ordered Frost White with Carmine Red cloth interior.

The truck was purchased new by a man named Chuck in Herculaneum, MO. Chuck sold it in 1979 to a young “Trooper” Trask in Crystal City, who drove it through high school. Trask sold it in the mid 1980’s to “Boozer” La Floure. By the time Boozer bought the truck it was in rough sape, so Boozer and some friends started fixing it up, before it was finished Boozer sold it to Marty Newkirk of Crystal City.

Marty redid some of the work done by the previous owner, had the engine rebuilt, lowered it, installed 3.73 gears and terrorized the streets of Festus and Crystal City with it. It didn’t take long before the local police knew the truck all to well, so Marty traded it to a car lot in Imperial, MO in 1989. Some time later Marty tried to find the truck to buy it back, but was told that it had been totaled and the owner of it killed.

Fast forward to 2003. I was shopping for a new toy, nothing in particular, but it had to be a hotrod. I responded to an Auto Trader ad for this 1975 GMC shortbed, I liked what the seller had to say, so I went and met Tim, who lived in Ferguson, MO to see the truck. I knew it was special when I saw it, even though it had some issues that needed to be addressed, but I bought it. Tim told me that he had found it sitting under a carport in North County, after sometime he asked the owner if it was for sale and was told no. Tim asked and was told no on several more occasions until finally they agreed to sell it because the owner was ill. We believe that owner was the person who had the interior redone. After I bought it and brought it back home to Festus is when its history started revealing itself. I had numerous people tell me they remembered the truck from years before, I kept saying it must have been one like it, because this one was from North St. Louis County. Finally John Lambert knew and insisted it was the truck that used to run around that Marty had. When Marty found out about it, he was like a kid who found his lost puppy. It still had the same tires on it that it had when he sold it 12 years before.

So this is how our truck got the name “BOOMER”, short for boomerang. The truck started its life in southern Jefferson County, made its way to a life in North St. Louis County. Then came back home to Festus.

We’ve had it for nearly 3 years now and really enjoy it, love how it looks, and sounds. It is a hoot to drive and the brutal 454 loves to punish those big rear tires.

I’ve done a number of small projects since I bought it in 2003. I cleaned and repanted the rally wheels, put new tires, new Sanderson shorty headers, with new exhaust, homemade bed cover, all new belts & hoses, Performed RPM intake, Holley 770 carb, D.U.I. ignition, some new chrome, restored the gauges, and other small details.

Boomer is currently (February 2006) at Premium Auto Body in Crystal City. Its nearly 20 year old body work was really showing its age, so it was time to get it taken care of before it got out of hand. After taking most of the panels and glass off the truck, they repaired all the panels, filled the stake pockets, smoothed the tailgate, and removed the drip rails. It will have a new wood floor, some new chrome, new rubber, and new GM Bright White paint with Candy Apple Red Rally stripes.

I can’t wait to get it back and do some fun cruises and shows this summer and many summers to come.

Since this was written the truck has been delivered and here is a picture of it.
