NICHOLAS SCHOOL RESUME BOOK INSTRUCTIONS

***DO NOT*** MAKE ANY FORMATTING CHANGES TO THE FILE.

***DO NOT*** CUT AND PASTE FROM ANY FILE INTO THIS FILE.

OPEN DEL RESUME FORMAT DOCUMENT AND “SAVE AS”: DEL_Last name.doc

1. To keep in the resume format, make format symbols visible, when working on our resume. To make symbols visible:

• click paragraph symbol (¶) on tool bar or;

• press Ctrl Shift *

2. Highlight NAME and type in your name.

• Press down arrow 3 times—you will be at CURRENT ADDRESS.

3. Highlight CURRENT ADDRESS and type in the first line of your address.

• Hit enter type in additional address lines; enter hard return at end of each address line.

If a hyperlink is created when you type in your email address, hit "Ctrl Z" to remove hyperlink.

• After typing last line of address, DO NOT HIT ENTER, press down arrow twice to move cursor to Career Interests.

4. Type in your Career Interests beginning two spaces after the colon.

• Only the first word is capitalized and interests are separated with semi colons.

• If information goes to a second line, continue typing text as it will automatically format.

• Put period at the end of your statement.

• Press down arrow 5 times to move to EDUCATION.

5. Partial information for the DEL MASTER OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT has been entered for you.

• To begin, enter hard return, tab twice (text will format automatically).

• If information is only one line of text, enter a hard return, tab twice and begin typing the next line of text.

• After you have completed the DEL MEM section, enter two hard returns, tab once and repeat the above process for your Bachelor’s degree.

• After completing the EDUCATION section, press down arrow twice to move to PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE (DO NOT HIT ENTER).

6. Type your job title (bold), organization, and location on first line (these are not bold).

• If information goes to second line, press down arrow once (DO NOT HIT ENTER). Insert hard return at the end of this information.

• To enter job description, tab twice and begin typing, will automatically format.

WATCH FOR INAPPROPRIATE BOLDING.

• After completing your first job description, enter two hard returns.

• Using same format as above, type information for subsequent jobs.

• After completing the PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE section, press down arrow twice to move to next section (DO NOT HIT ENTER).

7. Your resume may include one, both or none of the next two sections (OTHER EXPERIENCE and/or ADDITIONAL INFORMATION).

• Same format instructions used for PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE apply to these sections.

ADDITIONAL FORMATTING INFORMATION:

No personal weblinks permitted on resume book resumes.

Each resume must have two full line spaces between name and address and one full line space between each major heading (Education, Professional Experience, etc.). Between text entries within a major heading, there can be one full line space or half-line spacing depending on need.

To change line spacing, place cursor in front of paragraph (¶) symbol; right click on Paragraph. Change Line spacing = Exactly; At = 6 pt

MAJOR HEADINGS AND NAME

Major headings are typed in BOLD-ALL CAPS

Bold and Italics

• Italics may be used to identify species, titles of books or journals stated in a job description.

• When using bold or italics DO NOT bold or italicize punctuation following the text.

Punctuation

• Colons and periods are followed by 2 spaces

• Commas are followed by 1 space

• Commas are on the inside of quotation marks (“do it this way,” please).

Abbreviations

All words must be spelled out in their entirety (street, road, department, agency, etc.). Exceptions:

Names of states when used to identify location (Durham, NC)

US (no periods) in front of federal agencies (US EPA, US Forest Service)

Recognized federal agencies/organizations (NOAA, FEMA, UNEP, IBM, URS Consulting)

Standard environmental regulations (RCRA, CERCLA, NPDES, CAA 1990 Amendments)

Miscellaneous

• DEL resumes may be one or two pages in length.

• Resumes must be typed in Microsoft Word using Century Schoolbook 10; if you do not have access to Century Schoolbook font use Times New Roman 11 font.

• Save your resume as “DEL_lastname.doc” (e.g., DEL_kirchof.doc). Spell out your last name completely.
