Position Title: Preschool Teacher Assistant

Job Summary: Preschool Assistant works under the direction and supervision of the

Preschool Site Supervisor/Teacher. The Assistant is responsible in supervising and interacting directly with the children. Assistant will assist the Site Supervisor/Teacher in facilitating all aspects of the planning, organization and implementation of the daily program.

Representative Duties:

Assists the Site Supervisor in facilitating all aspects of the planning, organization, and implementation of the instructional program, including early literacy and emerging writing in English

Works cooperatively with the Site Supervisor/Teacher, accepts supervision and promotes a positive atmosphere in the center

Provides active and constant supervision of children at all times during indoor and outdoor time

Follows Houghton Mifflin Pre K curriculum lesson plans and schedule of the program as directed

Plan, organize, physically arrange and present learning centers, circle time activities, and other activities and routines as required by the daily schedule

Maintains confidentiality on children and families served Assists with meals and snack preparation and clean-up Assists the Site Supervisor/Teacher to ensure that the supplies and all children's learning

tools are accessible, prepared, organizes and are in good repair Assists children with toileting or other special care needs as needed Assists in maintaining accepted standards of cleanliness and sanitation of program

facilities Participates in on-site and off-site learning opportunities including staff meetings Follows the procedures for child abuse reporting and understanding the responsibility for

action as mandated by law Contributes to the center's and program evaluation processes All other related duties as assigned

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of: Human development- especially social, emotional, physical, cognitive, language and

creative development for the preschool aged child (3-5 years)

Literacy, phonemic awareness, creative activities and other learning adventures and ideas that will appropriately support and guide preschoolers in their active learning and experiences while in the preschool

Knowledge of appropriate food handling procedures Universal Health Precautions

Ability to: Follow oral and written directives Work cooperatively with all team members, other programs, services and agencies Accept and utilize comments and criticism from colleagues, supervisors and parents

in a constructive way Read and write fluently in English Lift and move items weighing 35 pounds independently Lift and move items weighting up to 50 pounds with assistance Manage time to effectively meet the goals of the program Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Invite information, constructive criticism and cooperation from others. Establish rapport and gain the trust of others. Maintain equanimity in the face of resistance, indifference or hostility. Work effectively in a strong service environment, under pressure, and subject to

changing priorities

Education and Experience:

Education: High School diploma or recognized equivalent and six (6) units of Early Childhood Education (ECE) or Child Development (CD) coursework.

Experience: Experience working in a state preschool preferred.

Licenses and Other Requirements:

Possess a valid California driver's license, responsible driving record and the availability of an automobile with the liability coverage required by the LCOE policy.

First aid and CPR certificate required on hire or immediately obtained thereafter. On-going job development required. Position will sometimes require travel to other work sites.

Hours of Employment:

Hours of employment vary according to work site, 10 month position.

Salary: Appropriate placement on Classified Preschool Salary Schedule, PS Range 01, Steps

1-5 ($11.61 to $13.33 per hour/DOE).

Benefits: Benefits eligibility at 20 hours per week, prorated share based on full time

equivalency. Major medical, dental, and vision for employee and all eligible dependents. Employee contribution varies based on the tier selected. The employee may purchase coverage through a 125 tax shelter premium plan. PERS retirement system. Employer paid term life

insurance for employee only. Paid vacation and holidays in accordance with Lake County Office of Education Personnel Policies.

Physical Abilities:

Physical, mental and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position under sometimes stressful conditions; (e)

Manual dexterity sufficient to write, use telephone, business machines, operate an automobile; (e)

Vision sufficient to read printed materials; (e) Hearing sufficient to conduct in person and telephone conversations; (e) Speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal

conversational distance, on the telephone, and in addressing groups; (e) Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, and to reach overhead; (e) Physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, District, from

school or home site to site), to drive an automobile; (e) Physical strength sufficient to lift forty-five (45) pounds; (e) Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish

facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions. (e) (e) = essential
