Payment Processing Modernization:

The Major Card brands are imposing a financial liability shift starting October 1, 2015, to U.S. merchants that fail to comply with the EuroPay MasterCard Visa (EMV) card processing standard. The EMV standard uses an imbedded microchip in modern cards to replace the long-held magnetic stripe located on the back of credit cards as the primary electronic means of automating the card entry process. Rather than swiping cards through a magnetic stripe reader (MSR), customers insert their credit card into the slot of a payment device that reads and writes to the card during the authorization process. Besides changing how cards are entered, the new EMV standard requires an expanded request/response messaging process between the payment device and the issuing bank to rigorously validate the legitimacy of the card before issuing an approval.
