Reformation Sunday“The Lord Almighty is With Us”October 25, 20209:30 AM ServiceAs We GatherPsalm 46 forms the basis of Martin Luther’s great Reformation hymn “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.”? Both the Psalm and the hymn describe God as actively controlling everything.? He delivers disaster and deliverance.? He decides our fate.? Both the Psalmist and Luther have no doubts about where they stand with God.? They confidently assume that God is on their side.? Do you have that confidence?? Do you ever wonder in the midst of troubles if He is on your side or even around at all?? Through this Psalm and this hymn God wants us to know where He is readily found in times of trouble, how He is our refuge and strength, and that in all circumstances the Lord Almighty is with us.Welcome“Praise to the Lord the Almighty” (LSB 790) InvocationConfession and Absolution (from Divine Service IV, page 203) P In the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit.C Amen.P Our help is in the name of the Lord,C who made heaven and earth.P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. P Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people, let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.C Amen.“In Christ Alone” ReadingsFirst Reading: Revelation 14:6-76?Then I saw another angel flying in midair,?and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people.?7?He said in a loud voice, “Fear God?and give Him glory,?because the hour of His judgment has come. Worship Him who made?the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”This is the Word of the LordThanks be to GodPsalm 46 (Responsive) 1?God is our refuge?and strength,????an ever-present?help?in trouble.2?Therefore we will not fear,?though the earth give way????and the mountains fall?into the heart of the sea,3?though its waters roar?and foam????and the mountains quake?with their surging.4?There is a river?whose streams?make glad the city of God,????the holy place where the Most High?dwells.5?God is within her,?she will not fall;????God will help?her at break of day.6?Nations?are in uproar,?kingdoms?fall;????he lifts his voice,?the earth melts.7?The?Lord?Almighty?is with us;????the God of Jacob?is our fortress.8?Come and see what the?Lord?has done,????the desolations?he has brought on the earth.9?He makes wars?cease????to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow?and shatters the spear;????he burns the shields?with fire.10?He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;????I will be exalted?among the nations,????I will be exalted in the earth.”11?The?Lord?Almighty is with us;????the God of Jacob?is our fortress.Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.Second Reading:Romans 3:19-2819?Now we know that whatever the law says,?it says to those who are under the law,?so that every mouth may be silenced?and the whole world held accountable to God.?20?Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law;?rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.21?But now apart from the law the righteousness of God?has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.?22?This righteousness?is given through faith?in?Jesus Christ?to all who believe.?There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,?23?for all have sinned?and fall short of the glory of God,?24?and all are justified?freely by His grace?through the redemption?that came by Christ Jesus.?25?God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,?through the shedding of His blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance He had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—?26?He did it to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.27?Where, then, is boasting??It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith.?28?For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. This is the Word of the LordThanks be to GodHoly Gospel:Matthew 11:12-1912?From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,?and violent people have been raiding it.?13?For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.?14?And if you are willing to accept it, He is the Elijah who was to come.?15?Whoever has ears, let them hear.16?“To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:17?“‘We played the pipe for you,????and you did not dance;we sang a dirge,????and you did not mourn.’18?For John came neither eating?nor drinking,?and they say, ‘He has a demon.’?19?The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’?But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”This is the Gospel of the Lord.Praise to You O ChristNicene CreedI believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.
