The Resurrection: A Divine Necessity!

1 Corinthians 15:12 - 22

1 Corinthians 15:12-22

12Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?

13But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen.

14And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty.

15Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise.

16For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen.

17And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!

18Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.

19If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.

20But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

21For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead.

22For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.

Introduction

A serious day with a serious message.....

1. The New Testament Stresses The Necessity of Jesus'

Resurrection.

A. It states that a belief in the resurrection of Jesus is essential to

salvation

Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

1 Corinthians 15:17 (TEXT) And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!

Page 2

B. The explicit teaching of the New Testament (Covenant - Hebrews)

is that the resurrection of Jesus is a divine necessity

1. Paul was saying that, "If Jesus did not rise from the dead,

then all is futile or vain.

2. There is no need to preach, for there is nothing to believe.

3. Consequently, if Jesus is still in the tomb, you are still in your

sins!

4. Paul actually says here that the resurrection is imperative

even though Christ became the “sacrificial lamb.”

5. It is great to stress the importance of the resurrection, but it is

more than important, it is indispensable!

2. The Apostles Stressed The Importance of The

Resurrection.

A. On the Day of Pentecost, (Acts 2:22 - 24) the ministry of the

church was launched with Peter declaring,

"Ye have taken Jesus, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain Him, who God has raised up...”

B. In Acts 2:29 - 32, Peter declares that the tomb of David still

exists, but:

"This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.”

Page 3

C. After the healing of the lame man at the beautiful gate in

Acts 3:14 & 15 Peter and John preached,

14But you denied the Holy One and the Just, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses.

D. At Cornelius' house in Acts 10:39 & 40 Peter proclaimed:

39And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree. 40Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly,

E. Paul preached to the Jew at Antioch in Pisidia in Acts 13:29 & 30

29Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. 30But God raised Him from the dead.

F. Before the philosophers on Mars' Hill in Acts 17:31, Paul testified

to the reality of the resurrection saying that God:

31because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”

G. Paul was given an opportunity to speak in his own defense before

Festus and Agrippa in Acts 26:22 & 23. In explaining his

ministry and preaching, he said,

22Therefore, having obtained help from God, to this day I stand, witnessing both to small and great, saying no other things than those which the prophets and Moses said would come—

23that the Christ would suffer, that He would be the first to rise from the dead, and would proclaim light to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles.”

3. So Why Is The Resurrection So Important?

A. Why?

▪ Why was His death on the cross not sufficient enough?

▪ Was it not the shedding of His blood that forgives from sins?

▪ If so, why did Paul declare in the TEXT:

1 Corinthians 15:17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!

4. WHY? - The answer must be linked to what He did at the

resurrection

5. What did He do at the time of the resurrection that relates to

our sin being forgiven?

B. Part of the answer is found in John 20:17, where the resurrected

Jesus said To Mary Magdalene:

17Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’”

[pic]

Here the original word for “touch me not” is

Hapto = “do not cling to me; do not hold me!

[pic]

C. Why was it so important for Jesus to go to heaven?

D. Why was it so important that no one should touch him -Hold Him?

Page 5

E. The answer is found in the Book of Hebrews chapters 7 - 10 in

particular...

1. These chapters deal with

• the old covenant and the new covenant

• the priest of the old testament and Jesus "the priest,"

• the blood of animals and the blood of Jesus, etc.

2. They give the same order of sacrifice as given in the Levitical

Law listed and described in Leviticus 16

a. The Priest must cleanse himself (not be touched or

touch any unclean thing)

b. And the Priest must go through the veil into the Holy of

Holies to take the blood of the sacrifice.

c. One day a year on the day of Atonement (October 10)

Leviticus 16:15

“Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, which is for the people, bring its blood inside the veil…”

3. Paul in Hebrews tell us why Jesus had to go to heaven

and why he could not be touched....

Hebrews 9:11 - 14

11But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.

12Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

[13 & 14 on next page]

Page 6

13For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh,

14how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Hebrews 9:24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

F. The wilderness tabernacle was only a man made replica of the "real

tabernacle" [Hebrews 9:11 & 24 above]

G. The blood of bulls, goats, turtle doves, and pigeons was only a

precursor to the "real and true sacrifice" of the blood of Jesus!

H. Bells were tied on the hem of the Priest’s garments because there

may be sin in him and he would die in the presence of God.

I. Jesus didn’t need “bells” - the sinless, spotless, pure Savior

Resurrected to take his blood into the presence of God the Father!

[pic]

Conclusion:

A. So why is the Resurrection a Divine Necessity?

1. The virgin birth with the Holy Spirit overshadowing Mary produced

the spotless, sinless "Blood of God" that flowed through the veins of

Jesus.

2. Jesus was the only one able to carry the blood of God into

the presence of God the Father!

• Just like in Revelation, Jesus will be the only one who can open the sealed book…..

Page 7

3. Jesus had to resurrect to be able to take the sacrificial blood into

God’s presence!

4. Therefore, The Resurrection was a Divine Necessity!

C. God in His wisdom designed His plan of salvation so that His Son must

not only die for the sins of the world, but He also conceived the plan in

such a manner that it could not be accomplished without Jesus being

raised from the dead.

D. He has risen indeed!

It Was A Divine Necessity!
