LESSON QUESTIONS

1. Read Genesis 22 and briefly describe how God tested Abraham’s faith.

Use the following verses to compare Isaac and Jesus Christ.

Genesis 22:2 and Matthew 3:17; John 3:16 ________________________________________________________________

Genesis 22:3 and Matthew 26:39, 42 (Who led the sons?) ____________________________________________________

Genesis 22:6 and John 19:17 ___________________________________________________________________________

Genesis 22:9 and Matthew 26:39, 42 (willingness of the sons) _________________________________________________

Compare Abraham and God the Father in the following verses.

Genesis 22:1-3 and John 3:16 __________________________________________________________________________

Genesis 22:11-14 and John 3:35-36 _____________________________________________________________________

The sacrifice of Isaac was required at God’s command, but God provided a substitute and exchanged Isaac for a ram that God provided. The consequence of sin requires death. A blood sacrifice was needed to address the sin of humanity and satisfy God’s consequences (see the Hebrews 10 lesson from Fall 2020 for more information on sacrifices). Instead of humanity receiving the penalty for sin, which is death, what exchange happened at the cross? To put it another way, your sin required your life, but what happened instead? _________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________

Read John chapters 18 and 19. What words of Jesus are recorded in John 19:30? __________________________________

Other references for personal study: John 12:31; Acts 13:38-39; Gal. 3:13; Colossians 2:13-15; Hebrews 2:14; 10; 1 John 3:8

Write down the following verses.

2 Corinthians 5:21

1 Peter 2:24

1 Peter 3:18

2. According to Romans 4:13-25, what was accomplished in Jesus’ resurrection? ____________________________________

Because of Jesus’ resurrection, what promise holds true? John 3:16, 14:19 ______________________________________

What gift did we receive from the resurrected Lord when he ascended into heaven? John 16:7 _______________________

In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul explains the importance of Jesus’ resurrection. Verses 3-4 say that the gospel has a dual truth: Jesus died and was resurrected. If you believe one part without the other, are you saved from the penalty of sin and given eternal life? ______________

What does Christ’s resurrection mean about our future? 1 Corinthians 15:20-22 __________________________________

3. Use a dictionary to define “faith” and define it in relation to the Bible. __________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

What do the following verses say about faith?

Romans 10:17

Hebrews 11:1-3

Hebrews 11:6

Ephesians 2:8-10

James 2:26

(Application) Read Hebrews 11:13-16. These verses describe the people in the examples of faith given in Hebrews 11:1-12. What can you learn from their faith and apply in your life?

4. We have seen that faith is necessary to our salvation. Now, let’s look at how hope is related to our faith.

(Opinion) What are some things that you hope for?

Use a dictionary to define “hope” and define it in relation to the Bible. __________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

According to 1 Peter 1:3, what is the reason for the believer’s hope? ____________________________________________

The verses on the next page are included for your personal (optional) use for continued meditation and reflection now or during Holy Week. Read God’s Word and take notes on what Holy Spirit reveals to you.

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

John 14:1-7

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

Titus 2:11-14

Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Hebrews 10:19-25

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Romans 8:18-25

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

1 John 3:2-3

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Romans 5:1-5

[Jesus answered them] Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.

John 6:47

…but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect…

1 Peter 3:15

For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do. And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
