JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Retail Development Manager – part time/ 3 days per week

RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of Trading

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Retail Supervisors, Retail Assistants, Retail Volunteers

1. JOB PURPOSE

Reporting to the Head of Trading, you will drive Harewood House Trust’s retail strategy, generating the income needed to support its educational charitable aims. This will include on and off site retail, ecommerce, limited editions, publishing and licencing. You will identify and develop creative and innovative product ranges that reflect HHT’s brand and showcase our collections.

You will manage the operations of the retail outlets, liaising with suppliers and ensuring effective processes for stock management are in place. You will be responsible for visual merchandising and ensuring high standards of presentation are maintained. You will also oversee the effective use of our EPOS/ ecommerce system and deliver training on this and other related areas to frontline staff as necessary.

2. HAREWOOD HOUSE TRUST

Harewood House is one of England’s finest country houses. Lived in by the Lascelles family since its creation, it is a house and collection of national importance and one of Yorkshire’s leading visitor attractions. The House and Gardens have been open to the public since the 1950s. In 1985, the educational charitable trust, the Harewood House Trust (HHT) was established

Harewood House Trust is a registered charity, under the direction of its Board of Trustees. The House is open daily to the public for most of the year, with 200,000 annual visitors.

Charitable income is generated through admission fees, public events, membership and fundraising. Commercial activity is managed through a wholly owned trading subsidiary to the charity and includes retail, venue hire, and a catering contract.

3. KEY RESULT AREAS

▪ Leading the development and delivery of HHT’s retail strategy and ensuring that financial targets are met.

▪ Managing on-site retail, including managing the team and setting sales targets. Ensuring excellent standards of customer care delivered at all times.

▪ Sourcing and buying a variety of products appropriate to HHT and its audience profile, including books, jewellery, children’s, stationery, textiles, homeware and plants.

▪ Work closely with the wider team and sensitively exploit the collections to develop exclusive new ranges, licensing oportunities (images and product) and new publications. Overseeing design, development and production of HHT merchandise and packaging – graphic design experience desirable.

▪ Collaborating with artists, designers and illustrators to commission bespoke merchandise inspired by specific themes.

▪ Developing and maintaining effective ongoing stock control by overseeing purchase orders, stock turn, book returns, write-offs, delivery procedures, storage needs and exit strategy for slow-moving or discontinued stock.

▪ Planning and executing the audited annual stocktake and interim stock checks.

▪ Planning and executing the visual merchandising schedule around new range launches and seasonal opportunities

▪ Liaising with suppliers and attending Trade Fairs to identify relevant stock and secure profitable terms.

▪ Involvement in publishing arrangements for exhibition catalogues including costs, pricesetting, delivery, distribution, storage and stock control.

▪ Managing the effective use of the EPOS system – liaising with our EPOS provider, and training staff as required.

▪ Managing on-line retail, ensuring that new ecommerce systems are integrated effectively and an efficient service is provided for customers.

▪ Collaborating with other teams and the catering operator to maximise opportunities for on site retail sales including the house, catering spaces and at major events.

▪ Identifying new opportunities for off-site retail e.g. markets and fairs.

▪ Working closely with the marketing and communications team to develop and implement a marketing plan for retail activities.

▪ Providing effective leadership and management of the retail team. Recruiting and training your team to have excellent product knowledge and an ability to up-sell. Working closely with the Retail and Visitor Experience teams to ensure product knowledge, shop floor standards and customer service levels are consistently maintained.

▪ Managing the retail budget and set annual sales targets. Carrying out efficient KPI analysis, reporting monthly to the Head of Trading and as required to the Trading Board and SMT.

▪ Monitoring and controlling resources, taking action to keep on target including payroll costs.

▪ Representing the Retail Department both internally and externally.

▪ Being alert to opportunities for expanding the HHT’s commercial operations.

▪ Any other duties as reasonably requested by the Head of Trading.
