New England Intergroup (NEI) 2015 Spring Gathering

The Spring Gathering "Sobriety is a Priority" was a success! NEI would like to thank our keynote speakers, Mark, Fran, Seth and Jen for sharing their experience, strength and hope. Our break-out session topics ranged from Setting Bottom Lines to Humor and Recovery. Again, we were able to have the Gathering on the beautiful campus of the Andover Newton Theological School, which is even nicer in the spring. We had approximately 50 attendees including participants traveling from upstate New York and our friends from Montreal.

In answering the evaluation question "What did you like most about today's event?" participants stated: "Great topics, well organized"; Fellowship with buddies, being plunged deeper into recovery"; "Sharing with new people. Hearing fresh perspectives" and "Diverse group". When answering the question: "Is there anything you would like to change about the event?" participants stated: "Too much down time" and "It's a long day".

Thank you to all of you who participated in the raffle. We raised $215 for the delegate fund. We also raised $82 for the Retreat Scholarship Fund from the bake sale.

STEP AND TRADITION OF THE MONTH

Step 6: Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

Tradition 6: An S.L.A.A. group or S.L.A.A. as a whole ought never to endorse, finance, or lend the S.L.A.A. name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, or prestige divert us from our primary purpose.

Does your group need S.L.A.A. Basic Texts, pamphlets or chips?

Local S.L.A.A. meetings in Eastern MA and Rhode Island are encouraged to order their S.L.A.A. literature through New England Intergroup (NEI). Simply fill out the order form found at the NEI website, .

Email an order to literature@.

Orders may alternatively be mailed to our P.O. Box and picked up at the next NEI business meeting as long as it’s ordered 3 weeks in advance.

TRADITION 6

Why is it that this tradition exists? S.L.A.A. has been a program that has helped so many people to recover from the devastating effects of sex and love addiction. Why not look for ways to make more money for the fellowship outside of the groups? Wouldn’t the money give the program more strength? What’s wrong with setting up a club for 12 steps? Wouldn’t S.L.A.A. treatment centers be a valuable tool and help many people who suffer from this and related addictions?

These certainly are reasonable questions. Ones that deserve contemplation and answers.

There are many enterprises that are engaged in treatment of those with our addiction. They are very costly as many of our fellows in S.L.A.A. can tell us. There are many professionals involved in diagnosis, treatment and counseling of individuals. These professionals are paid. In fact, money is the life blood of these organizations and companies.

Individuals who have developed, worked and expanded these groups are very famous and we know many of them well. They do great works for those of us who suffer as well as those of us in recovery. They do, however, need money to expand and continue their efforts. It is of primary importance as any business knows.

For us in S.L.A.A. money is of secondary importance. The 7th tradition tells us we should support ourselves, but not accumulate capital in the form of property, money or prestige. Our focus is totally on sobriety and recovery and carrying the message.

Therefore we, by observing the 6th Tradition can maintain our focus on recovery and reaching out which costs nothing.

This does not mean people can’t have groups that get together, raise money for good causes, begin a treatment program etc. Just do not use the S.L.A.A. name for these groups.

We are all equals in this fellowship. The Chair and officers of FWS, Intergroups etc. are no more important or better than anyone else in the fellowship. Whether we have 25 years sobriety or one day we all still suffer from the same dis-ease. No matter how long a sobriety I have accumulated I know that it is only by the grace of God especially when I see a newcomer.
