Rev. Dr. Darryl D. Roberts joyfully enters the sanctuary of Nineteenth Street Baptist Church for his formal installation ceremony on Sunday, February 19. The afternoon service was the capstone of four days of celebratory events that brought together church members, family, clergy and friends from across the country. Trustee Franklin Smith and his wife Gloria did an outstanding job as co-chairs of the Installation Committee. The following pages share some of the highlights.

Answering the Call: Praying Together

Three days of installation activities for Rev. Dr. Darryl D. Roberts commenced on Thursday evening, February 16 with a vibrant installation prayer service in the main sanctuary of Nineteenth Street Baptist Church.

The service was led by the Board of Deacons with Deacons Johnnie Love and Fred Leftrict in charge. The prayer service was the culmination of a 40-day period in which the church leaders and body engaged in fervent prayer for our new pastor and our church as we inaugurate the era of our ministry with Dr. Roberts at the helm. For each of the 40 days a meditative thought, scripture and original prayer were offered by deacons, deaconesses, and deacon candidates. All were published

and distributed in a bound booklet. The prayer offerings of Deaconess Barbara Johnson (day 3) and Deacon Jessie McCrae (day 8), who are the chaplains of their respective boards, were read during the service. A special bound copy of the booklet was presented and dedicated to Dr. Roberts and his family. Prayers of thanksgiving and praise for God's goodness were offered throughout the service.

The dynamic message for the evening was delivered by Dr. Alton B. Pollard III, Dean of Howard University School of Divinity. Dr. Pollard, incidentally, served on the review board when Dr. Roberts defended his doctoral dissertation at Emory University in Atlanta. Dr. Pollard delivered a powerful message using several texts, primarily Mark 6: 9-13 and Luke 11: 1-4. He reminded us of the power of prayer and observed that our prayers have been answered with the coming of Dr. Roberts. The fact that he has known Dr. Roberts since his student days added credence to the glowing report he gave of Dr. Roberts. He further admonished us to pray without ceasing and to love one another.

The evening provided the congregation with much fervor and commitment as we mark the beginning of Pastor Roberts' tenure. v
