VDOE Report Reveals District's 2014-2015 Accreditation Ratings
Roughly 25 percent of Richmond City schools met the state's standards for full accreditation, as outlined by the Virginia Department of Education's (VDOE) 2014-2015 School Accreditation Ratings report. The report, released today by the VDOE, follows two consecutive years of statewide declines, which were anticipated as a result of the introduction of more rigorous reading, writing, science and mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) tests.
Across the state, only 68 percent of Virginia's public schools were rated as Fully Accredited, a decline of nearly 10 percentage points compared with the results of 20132014. The number of schools accredited with warning also increased, from 393 last year to 545 schools.
In a prepared statement, Superintendent of Public Instruction Steven R. Staples said, "The challenge now is to move beyond the temporary disappointment of an accreditation rating and work together -- school divisions shoulder to shoulder with the department -- to share best practices and implement the instructional strategies that will move our students toward college and career readiness."
School Superintendent Dr. Dana T. Bedden stated, "While we know that student success is more than just a singular measure, we must work diligently to ensure that our students' performance not only meets, but exceeds, the expectations set forth by state guidelines." Bedden added, "I commend the work of our students, staff, parents and community for the progress we have made thus far and remain confident in our ability to rise to the occasion with the changes we have already begun to put in place. Many of our schools showed great gains this year. The new test requirements for passing represent higher expectations for our students. For all of us in Virginia and in Richmond, meeting the mark will be a multi-year process."
