Song-Going to the Zoo

Summary- 1, 2, 3 to the Zoo is a story about various animals riding on a train to go to the zoo. The story can be used to promote your child’s counting skills. It can also be used to build language of young children by encouraging the identifaction and naming of various animals.

Questions to promote speaking and listening

• I wonder which of the animal is the biggest? Which animal do you think is the smallest?

• Where were the animals going? What was their destination?

• Who was bringing the animals to the zoo?

• How many elephants, zebras and lions do you see?

• How many more antelops were riding the train than elephants?

• What animal can you see in each of the pictures in this book? Look carefully while I read.

Ways to wrap language around the book to build Vocabulary

• The man driving the train is a conductor.

• The train cars are travel on rails. Rails is another name for train tracks.

• How many train cars were there in the story all together? Teaches children another meaning of the word car in context to the story.

• If you were to visit the zoo, what animal would you want to see? Why that?

Activities for toddler or preschoolers

• Scissors(use with parent present)

Contsruction your own train

Have the child draw a train with you and connect drawn picture to form at train. Alternatively cut out shapes and glue then together to make various shaped train cars using circles for the wheels, squares andrectangles of various sizes for cars, doors, and windows.

Ask the child questions to promote conversation –

• Where is the train going?

• What are the train car’s carrying inside?

Give the child pictures based on the order in the story
