ESSENTIAL QUESTION

What problems led to the decline of the Roman Empire?

Rome At Its Height

The rule of Emperor Caesar Augustus, formally known as Octavian, had led to a 200 year period of peace known as the Pax Romana.

By the 100's C.E. Rome had reached its height of power, reaching from Britain to Egypt and from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mesopotamian Area.

Romans built an extensive road network to unite all of its conquered lands and to have access to all the sea routes within their empire.

A Vast Empire

At the height of their power, the Roman Empire controlled a multicultural empire that included Egyptians, Greeks, Syrians, Jews, Celts, and Gauls. This meant these people spoke different languages and practiced different religions.

At the center of this vast empire was the city of Rome, Italy. Italy's central location on the Mediterranean Sea made it an ideal location for sea trade.

Christianity was introduced to Rome in the first century C.E.

Rome respected the philosophy and literature of ancient Greece and eventually adapted their architecture. This would lead to the construction of great buildings like the Roman Colosseum.
