YesWhat is the approximate area of land, in kilometres, shown on the map? 8 km2 0335171The landscape in the map is very mountainous. The height of the land ranges from just over 250 metres up to 600 metres. The slopes are very steep especially on the sides of Glenmacnass valley. The flat floor of Glenmacness and its steep sides show it is a u-shaped valley which was eroded by a glacier. Irish mountains are mostly unsuitable for human settlement as they are too cold, wet and have infertile podzols soils. Few Irish people live above 200 metres as the environment is too severe and economic opportunities are scarce . Proof of this is the small number of settlements in the Glenmacnass area. 00The landscape in the map is very mountainous. The height of the land ranges from just over 250 metres up to 600 metres. The steep slopes, cool, wet climate and infertile soils make it difficult for human settlement. Most of the land is open mountain which is covered with heather and gorse or is just bare rock. One farm animal, the sheep, thrives on the rough mountain pastures. The small population is confined to the sheltered floor of a u-shaped valley which was formed by a glacier during the last Ice Age. The only good grassland is on the valley floor. It is difficult for the hill sheep farmer to grow enough fodder on the valley floor in summertime to feed his flock during the winter when heavy snow is common. They are often cut off by snow storms. There may also be some work tending trees in the local forests. People in the Glenmacnass area are greatly affected by the mountainous relief and harsh climate.LP 3 Location of IndustryWhich of the following are present in the photograph?FeaturesPresent Location√ or XRailway line√From SW to NEQuarry√Centre and SWPastoral farm√SouthForest√NorthMotorway√NEMarket gardensXTillage farm√EastProcessing plant√Centre and EPerimeter 4.9 Kms.Activate the Elevation Profile tool. They also suit the building of transport links such as roads and railways. The Platin site is underlain by limestone rock which is the main raw material in the production of cement. This rock is extracted or quarried on-site this helps to keep the cost of raw materials down. Good transport infrastructure links the site to the market. The surrounding land is used mostly for different types of agriculture so the population density is low. Quarrying and production of cement can be noisy and dusty so it is best located away from large population centres.00 The Site of Platin Cement Factory The Platin cement factory is sited on a plain of 40 metres in height. The name Maynooth is derived from ‘Maigh Nuad’ which means ‘the Plain of Nuad. Plains are low, flat land suitable for agriculture. The land around Maynooth ranges from fifty metres to one hundred metres in height. When the Normans arrived in Ireland they conquered the fertile lands especially the lowlands around rivers. The Normans set up estates called settlements beside rivers. They built mottes or castles to protect these settlements. They constructed churches for worship and mills to grind corn to produce flour. Map evidence shows Maynooth was a Norman manor located on the Lyreen river which powered a flour mill.Maynooth remained a very small settlement until the 18th Century. Then local landlord, the Earl of Kildare, built a large Georgian mansion, Carton House, to the north east of the village. The Earl also developed Maynooth as a planned estate village for his workers. Maynooth was laid out in the Georgian style with a very wide and straight Main Street, grand public buildings such as the Court House, and terraces of small Georgian houses for the estate workers. The village was linked to the estate by a tree lined avenue. In the middle of the 18th Century the Royal Canal was built. The canal had a harbour at Maynooth. Wealthy passengers along with agricultural goods and fuels were the transported to and from Dublin. The canal increased trade and helped Maynooth to develop as a market town. By the middle of the nineteenth century the rail line had opened. The cattle pens beside the rail line show that livestock was now transported by rail. Maynooth continued to develop as market town during the 20th Century.Late in the 18th Century St. Patrick’s College was set up for the education of priests. This was the beginning of Maynooth’s educational function which increased in importance through the 19th and 20th Centuries. In 1997 NUI Maynooth was established. It is the only Irish university not located in a city. Today NUI Maynooth has over 13,000 students spread across twin campuses split by the R 148 road. The building of the M4 motorway in 1992 meant Maynooth became more accessible from Dublin. Workers could live in Maynooth and commute by car to work in Dublin. Maynooth became a dormitory town for Dublin. This led to the building of many housing estates especially to the south of the town between the railway and the motorway. The population of the town grew rapidly so there was a greater demand for shops and other services.Maynooth developed from Norman manor, to estate village, to market town to being a modern dormitory and university town. Maynooth’s current prosperity is due largely to students and commuters and its excellent transport links to Dublin and the rest of the country.R 5 Coastal Features on Aerial PhotographsColumn XCoastal featuresColumn YLocation ITM CoordinatesAReclaimed mud flats1X 720487 Y 644096A3BBlown out sand dunes2X 709621 Y 616825B5CSand spit3X 707083 Y 618 199C10DGeos and blowholes4X 725353 Y 760998D9EBay head beach5X 730682 Y 683552 E7FLagoon6X 556 524 Y 542930 F8GTombolo7X 551986 Y 540020G4HCoastal wind farm8 X 500184 Y 670885H1ICliffs with wave cut platforms9X 499753 Y 841727I6JGroynes10X 465295 Y 594768J2R 6 Economic Activities on Aerial PhotographsColumn XEconomic ActivityColumn YLocation ITM CoordinatesAIndustrial estate1X 582870 Y 933987A6BTillage Farming2X 613948 Y 939257B9CBlanket bog turf cutting3X 623856 Y 939885C1DSea fishing4X 561027 Y 836978D8EMining5X 714957 Y 745426E10FHoliday resort6X 709857 Y 730733F3GMarket Gardening7X 607106 Y 735969G5HFish Farming8X 728537 Y 739504H2IAirport9X 701523 Y 629578I4JRaised bog turf cutting10X 684940 Y 768015J7R7 Relating Photographs to Mapsplateau gap u-shaped N11 concave conicalMoving eastwards from Maulin Mountain there is a concave slope followed by a steep sided u-shaped valley.
