The Paper Boy
The Paper Boy

Many people in Britain take two newspapers. In the morning, they get one of the national newspapers, and read it at breakfast or on the bus
or the train. And in the evening, they get a local paper.
The people who deliver these newspapers are usually schoolchildren. Some work in the evening to deliver the local papers; some work in the
morning.
John has to get up at 4.30 every morning to deliver his papers to different houses in his neighbourhood, even when it is dark and cold
outside. He has about eighty customers.
John is saving his money to buy a new bicycle. He is saving money for college also. He has already saved £ 500 and he is very happy.

Her husband told her to stay within the family budget.
Today she is buying food. She is going to spend more than £ 50, but she is going to compare prices carefully. Meat is very expensive so Mrs
Harvey is going to buy chicken. Her family complains but she tells them: "You have to learn to like chicken."

The first modern Olympics took place in 1896 in Athens, Greece. Thirteen nations participated in the games, which were organised by Baron
Pierre de Coubertin, a Frenchman. He wanted to encourage sports and friendship between all nations. The most important thing in the Olympic
Games was not to win, but to participate. But today, it is very important to win because the winners get a lot of money.
The symbol of the Olympics is five circles. They represent the five continents. The circles are blue, yellow, black, green and red, the
colours usually found on national flags. The circles join together to show the friendship between all the nations.

Dear Mum and Dad,
Well, I’ve arrived! And I’ve got such a fantastic room. I must describe it to you.
I couldn’t believe it, it’s so big! When you come in the door there is a big fire place on the
Left, and on both sides of it there are bookshelves from the ceiling to the floor. Opposite the door there are two large bay windows, and
under the one on the left there’s a large table with a chair. Along the the wall opposite the fire place there’s a small single bed with a
very nice sort of Indian bedspread,
red and brown. In the middle of room there two armchairs, which I’ve put in front of the fire. But best
of all, there’s a piano! It doesn’t work, but it impresses all my friends. That’s just by the door. Oh, and
there’s a lovely small table where I put my stuff when I come in, just near the door.
Well, I’ll tell you later about the city, the university and all my new friends.

I know everything about the London underground. It is more than 100 years old and works with
electricity of course, but the first underground trains were steam trains. I suppose it was very dirty in
the old days! This week I’ve got to write a composition about transport in London in 1920’. Can you
help me? I know you’ve got some old photos and postcards. Please, send them to me!
I must stop now. Lucy is waiting for me. She wants to go to the zoo to meet Mum. We are going To take the underground. I’m sure she’s going

Mexico City is a very interesting place to visit. It has some great museums and lots of fascinating old buildings. And the hotels are not too

When people have a cold, a fever or the flu, they usually go to the doctor for help, or they get some medecine from grugstore. But many
people also use home remedies for common illnesses. Here are some simple home remedies.
For burns, put the burn under cold water or put a cold handkerchief on it. It’s important not to put ice on the burn.
For colds, many people rub oil on their chest. Other people drink a mixture of red pepper, hot water, sugar, lemon juice, and milk or
vinegar.
Apply an ice pack or cold cloth to your head, or splash your face with cold water. It’s also a good idea to put your hands into hot water and
leave them there for several minutes.
For insomnia, drink a large glass of warm milk. It’s also a good idea to soak in a warm bath.
Two New Restaurants in Town

This week I tried two new restaurants - Michelle’s and Anton’s. They are both French restaurants downtown. Michelle's is a small place with
about twenty tables. The waiters and the waitresses are very friendly, and the service is excellent. I ordered chicken with orange sauce
along with rice and a salad. Then I had chocolate cake and coffee. The chicken was delicious, but the cake was too dry. The meal cost about
twenty dollars.
Anton’s is a much bigger restaurant, and it was very crowded on that night. I waited twenty minutes for a table. Anton’s is noisier than
Michelle's, and the waiter was very slow with my meal. I ordered soup and a steak with fried potatoes and vegetables. The soup wasn't very
hot. The steak was OK, but the vegetables weren’t very good. For dessert, I had ice-cream. The meal was really expensive - about forty-five
dollars! Now you know why I would go to Michelle's again, but not to Anton’s.

There are so many cars on the roads nowadays that driving in big towns is not pleasant at all.
Some time ago, a friend who works in a part of the city I do not know very well, invited me. It took me hours to get there and find a place
to park. As I was late, I hurried off on foot, thinking that these days it is much easier to walk than to drive. At noon, just as I was
leaving my friend’s office, I suddenly realised that I had no idea where I had parked my car. I walked down street after street, examining
each car closely but without any result. Feeling quite tired, I gave up the search and went off for lunch. Some time later, I left the
restaurant and walked slowly down the street. I turned the corner, and there was my car, right in front of me but on the window was a little
ticket. It was a fine for bad parking.
Next time I visit my friend, I’ll take a taxi.
Yesterday morning at 9.30a.m, two bikers died in a tragic accident on a sharp bend on Airport Road. The bikers were talking to each other
while they were overtaking a lorry which was travelling in the direction of Heathrow Airport. Apparently they were having morning exercise in
preparation for the Tour de France. Two motorcyclists were coming from Heathrow Airport while looking at a low-flying landing airplane. “They
were riding very fast”, an eyewitness said. The collision between the motorcyclists and the bikers blocked the traffic for more than two
hours. Two policemen were investigating the accident when we arrived on the scene.

America. Their father, Paul, is a mechanic. Their mother, Kate, is a nurse at the local hospital. Willy is a second-year student at the local
junior high school. He isn't as good as his sister at studies. If he doesn't get good results this year, he'll leave school and work with his
father. Mary is better than her brother. She gets very good marks and is top of her class. If she gets a scholarship, she'll go to Grossmont
College. She'll study there for four years. Then, she'll go to university.
Abdelhamid Ibn Badis

Abdelhamid Ibn Badis was born in Constantine on the 4th December 1889. When he was 13 years old, El Cheikh Mohamed El Madassi taught him
Arabic language and helped him to learn the Koran.
After that, his father sent him to El Zaytouna University in Tunisia. He stayed there two years; he studied hard until he had the license.
When he came back to Algeria, he had good ideas. He used them to develop the society. He loved his country and he loved the mosque too; he
made it the center of teaching Arabic and Islamic religion. For this objective, he made a program. He taught young persons in the evening,
men the day and women every Friday.
Abdelhamid Ibn Badis was a teacher and a writer. He wrote four newspapers: El Souna, El Sirat, El Chihab and El Mountakad. He also wrote
poems. «Chabou El Djazairi moslim» which means «Algerians are moslim» is very famous.
In 1936, he founded «Djamiate Oulama El mouslimine» and was its first president. El Cheikh El Bachir El Ibrahimi was his assistant.
Abdelhamid Ibn Badis was a great and famous personality and he will be our example for ever.
Being Fat

"You should exercise more and eat less, Karim" his father advices. However, Karim refuses to listen and continues gobbling down the bar of
chocolate in his hands. His father sighs. Karim is too fat and lazy. His father does not want him to get any illness.
One day, while Karim is jogging during PE, he collapses. His teacher takes him to the doctor and calls his parents. At the clinic, the doctor
says that Karim is too fat. His heart is not working well enough. If he continues to gain weight, he may get a heart disorder. Karim is
afraid and starts to exercise. Now he has lost four kilograms.
Fast Food

Many children love eating fast food. This includes food such as burgers, pizzas, hotdogs and fish and chips. Although such food is tasty, it
does not provide us with enough vitamins, nutrients and the goodness that our bodies needs. This food is not very healthy as it usually
contains a lot of fat. Eating fast food often can result in weight gain.
However, you can make a meal at the fast food healthier by choosing a burger which has lots of vegetables in it, by skipping the fries and by
having plain water instead of carbonated soft drinks.
The Holy Month of Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month in Islamic calendar. All adults must fast Ramadan. They are not allowed to eat or drink between dawn and sunset.
Fasting strengthens a person by increasing his self-control. It also helps a Muslim to remember Allah and his obedience to him. Some are
excused from fasting. Some may be too old or too ill. Others are on journey. Women who are expecting or nursing a baby cannot fast. Eid
Al-Fitr comes after Ramadan. Muslims all over the world celebrate it. Muslims enjoy themselves with friends and relatives.
How to produce leather

To produce leather, we need natural animal skins such as: cows, oxen, goats and deers … etc. as soon as the skins are delivered to the
factory, they are cleaned. Then, they are salted and stored for three days under the sun. After that, they are washed again and put into a
machine where they are tanned with chemicals. The leather is then transferred into centrifuge machine where water is eliminated. Next, it is
cut dyed before it is dried. Finally, the leather is ready to be transformed in clothes, bags, shoes … etc.
People are very lucky today. We have all the facilities in our homes which make doing our everyday chores much easier. Our grandfathers and
grandmothers were not so fortunate when they were young.
People who grew up in the past experienced many hardships. They did not have a ready supply of water and electricity in their homes. They had
to fetch water from wells which were usually far away from their houses. During the dry season, the wells would dry up and they had to walk
even further to the streams or rivers to get water.
They cooked on wood or charcoal stoves. There were also no cables wires bringing electricity into their homes. They had to light up kerosene
lamps or candles to brighten up their homes.
Astronauts

Has any one of us ever got the slightest idea about what astronauts eat in space? Well. A typical daily meal for American astronauts in space
is tomato soup, chicken, mixed vegetables and strawberries. First, the food is frozen on earth and the water is taken out. The astronauts,
then, put cold water onto the food from a water gun which is connected to the food pack. The astronauts, as everyone else does, eat the food
with a knife, fork and spoon, but they have to be very careful because in zero-gravity bits of food can fly through the air! For snacks they
often eat peanuts and dried fruits. They also have a hot-water gun to make coffee and tea, and the astronauts have to drink through a plastic
tube. If one day you eat such a special meal, would you enjoy it?
Louis Pasteur

Louis Pasteur was a French scientist who discovered that bacteria caused diseases. Before his discovery, people suffered from all kinds of
illnesses and infections which could actually have been avoided. He found out that by applying heat for a certain period of time, germs in
dairy products and other types of food could be destroyed. The process of using heat to kill bacteria in food is now called pasteurization.
Now, following Louis Pasteur's discovery, many food items are processed in this way to keep away bacteria and to prevent it from thriving in
food products.
Unsatisfied Tourists

A group of tourists who recently visited Algeria after reading an ad brochure on a web-site complained about the unsatisfactory conditions.
They said there was on water in their rooms, bad accommodation, lack of transport … The food they had was not as delicious as promised in the
ad and the service was terrible.
They said if did not have their money back, they would write an official complaint to the authorities.
Water

Nearly three-quarters of the world is covered by water. The Pacific Ocean has a larger surface area than all the dry land on earth. This
water is not good for drinking. It's salty.
There are several different sources of drinking water. In some areas, dams prevent rivers from returning rainwater to the sea. Reservoirs are
formed to provide drinking water all year around. In other places, rainwater drains through the earth's surface and collects in lakes or
rivers underneath. The largest source of fresh water in the world is in Antarctica. People use water for washing (dishes, clothes and
themselves) in toilet, in industry. It is used in the making of electricity and irrigation.
A large number of accidents happen in the home. The most common accidents are falls, burns, scalds, electrocution suffocation and poisoning.
Small children are very active. They put everything in their mouths. They play with sharps things. They put plastic bags in their heads.
Mothers have dangers in the kitchen like burns, cuts, from kitchen utensils and open tins.
Bachir Menaceur is a third year student at Mohamed Dib School, in Tipaza. Yesterday, he had a radio interview with Abdelkader, a presenter at
the Algerian English service radio.
Abdelkader told him to say what he would do if he suddenly became rich. He answered: ‛If I became rich, I would pay a fishing boat for my
father, so that he would never work for a boss anymore’. He also said that he would travel around the world, pay a visit to Sidney, to see
his pen-friend and attend an international rugby match. And if his dreams came true, he would become a naval engineer and would work for the
Algerian Navy.
But unfortunately, this is just a dream. Bachir is very poor. Perhaps he will become rich.
S.O.S animals in danger

Many animals in the world are in danger. For many of them the biggest danger is humans. People have always killed animals for their meat and
for their skins. Others are killed because they eat crops or attack the farmer's animals. Some animals such as tigers and elephants used to
live in great numbers in countries like India. People have hunted them, so there are not many today. However, there are now laws in India
which protect them.
In south America, many different birds and animals have lost their natural homes in forests because thousands of trees have been cut down or
burnt. People then used the land for farming or building roads and towns.
Some species are nearly extinct. Only few of them live in some parts of the world. Others live only in zoos or special parks.
Zoos are important because they help some animals to live in security. They also permit to care for animals and learn more about them.
Miss Green's Flat

Miss Green is a schoolteacher. She lives alone in a large house. In the evening she corrects her pupils' papers and watches TV in the sitting
room. The sitting room, the kitchen and the dining room are downstairs. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms and a bathroom.
This is weather forecast for the next twenty four hours in Britain. It will rain tomorrow morning in the South of England. The North will be
colder with temperatures around four to five degrees Celsius. The East will coast will be warmer. There will be heavy rain and snow in the
late evening in Scotland …
The cat and the mice

Once upon a time there was a cat which terrorized the mice in an old house. They felt threatened, and their lives were in danger at every
moment. In order to find a solution to this problem, the mice had a meeting. All of them had wonderful ideas. "If we do this" said the one.
"No, no not that" said the other.
Then the oldest mouse of all proposed:" Let us put a bell around the neck of the cat, so that when we hear the bell, we will know that the
cat is nearing and we will have time to hide."
The rest of the mice jumped for joy at this clever idea. At last they would live at peace!
But later, one of the mice asked:" Who is going to hang the bell around the neck of the cat? Who Will have so much courage to do this!"
When all realized that the idea was very dangerous, all they could do was to hang their heads and keep on thinking. They did not let their
imaginations run away with them this time.

Yesterday was Saturday. I got up at seven o'clock and had breakfast. I went to work at eight thirty. I'm a doctor, so I sometimes work on
Saturday morning. I worked until 12: 30.After work, I had lunch with some friends in a restaurant. Then we went to the cinema. We saw
"Gladiator". It's a fantastic film! After that, I went home. I cooked dinner, and then listened to music. At ten o'clock I had a shower and
went to bed.
The Sahara

The Sahara is the largest desert in the world. It stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the West to Egypt and Sudan in the East. In Algeria,
it occupies more than 4/5 of the area but has less than 10% of the population.
Our desert has one of the lowest rainfalls in the world. This means that very few animals and plants can live there.
"The Blue Men" are the natives of the far South. They are mainly a nomadic Berber people called the Touareg. They have their own culture,
their customs and a special life style. Their caravans are always in movement. Their evening gatherings around glasses of mint tea are simply
marvelous. Lovely starlit nights, heavenly music generally played by women and splendid traditional dances performed by men wearing veils.
The Bermuda Triangle

At 2 pm on 5 December 1945, five US bombers took off from Fort Lauderlale in the USA for a training flight in perfect weather. Shortly
afterwards, the pilots radioed that their flight instruments were all malfunctioning. Two hours after take-off, all contact with the planes
was lost. A reconnaissance plane was immediately dispatched to search for the missing planes. Within 20 minutes, radio contact with it had
also been lost. No trace of any of the planes was ever found. In all, six planes and 27 men had vanished into the air.
The disappearance of the six planes was far from being the first mysterious incident in the area: for years, navigational problems and
strange magnetic forces had been reported. The disappearance was not even the greatest disaster within the triangle. The Cyclops, a
19,000-ton US ship was sailing from Barbados to Norfolk, Virginia. In March 1918, when it vanished with its crew of 309 from the surface of
he ocean without making a distress call and without the slightest wreckage ever being found.
The losses of boats and planes in that area defy explanation. The disasters are the origin of a new phrase in the English language – the
Bermuda Triangle and this phrase has entered legend. The Bermuda Triangle has been called the Devils' Triangle, the Triangle of Death, the
Graveyard of the Atlantic. It has swallowed up 140 ships and planes and more than 1,000 people. Today many airmen and sailors are still
afraid of that area of the Atlantic Ocean.
Mac Donald's: A HUNDRED BILLION HAMBURGERS

Once upon a time, a businessman named Ray Kroc discovered a restaurant owned by two brothers. The restaurant served just four things:
hamburgers, French fries, milk shakes and coca cola. But it was clean and inexpensive, and the service was quick. Mr Kroc liked it so much
that he paid the brothers so that he could use their idea and their name: Mc Donald's.
Beef, big business and fast service were the ingredients when Mr Kroc opened his first Mc Donald's in 1955. Four years later, there were 100
of them. Kroc knew Americans liked success. So he put signs saying how many millions of Mc Donald's hamburgers people had bought. In just
four years, the number was one hundred million. Now, there are more than 13,000 Mc Donald's restaurants from Dallas to Paris and from Moscow
to Beijing.
Anyone who wants to open a Mc Donald's must first work in one for a week. Then, they do a nine-month training programme, in the restaurants
and at 'Mc Donald's University' in Chicago. There they learn the Mc Donald's philosophy: quality control, service, cleanliness and cheap
prices. Mc Donald's has strict rules, Hamburgers must be served before they are ten minutes old, and French fries, seven.
Mc Donald's has never stopped looking for new methods to attract customers, from drive-in windows to birthday parties. Chicken, fish, salad
and, in some places, pizza are now on the menu. Mc Donald's in Holland even sells a vegetarian burger. Their international popularity shows
they have found the recipe for success.
Mystery Queen

Christie was probably the most successful writer in history. She wrote 78 crime novels, six other novels, 150 short stories, four non-fiction
books and 19 plays. That represents two billion books sold: more than William Shakespeare!
Christie became a writer by accident. She was bored when her husband was away in the First World War. Agatha was working in a hospital
dispensary (which is where she learned all the information about poisons that she used in her books). She decided to write a novel to pass
the time. She chose a detective novel because she loved reading them. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, was an instant
success. Each book had a new ingenious plot. Readers loved the books, particularly because Christie always gave the readers all the
information they needed to find the solution.
Christie loved travelling. When she became rich she could go all over the world. She used the travels in her writing. Agatha Christie died in
1976, but her stories are still immensely popular. Many have been adapted for film or television
In the past, a lot of people died because there were not any treatments for many illnesses. But during the last few years, a lot of medicines
and vaccines were discovered. Now, influenza, diabetes and some other ills are easily treated and people die less thanks to the big progress
in the field of medicine. But scientists are still working hard to find vaccines for other diseases as AIDS.
Some scientists think that to be in good health, people should eat fresh food, practise sport, drink a lot of water and juice, sleep early
and get up early …
Leaving Home

Young people leave their parents' homes at different ages in different parts of the world.
In the United States, a lot of college students do not live at home. Many choose to go to college in different cities - away from their
parents. At college, they live in university housing. After college, most people prefer to live in their own homes. They often live alone,
but some people rent apartments with others.
These people are roommates. By the age of 22, few young people in the United States live with their parents.
Families stay together longer in many Asian countries and cities. In Hong Kong, for example, nearly all university students live with their
parents. Rents in the city are very expensive, and few students have the money to pay for their own apartments.
Very few young people live alone or become roommates in a shared apartment. Many young people in Hong Kong continue to live with their after
they marry.
In Bangkok

We went to Thailand for our summer vacation last year. It was our first trip to Asia. We loved it. We spent a week in Bangkok and did
something different every day. We went to the floating market very early one morning. We didn't buy anything there, we just looked. Another
day, we went to Walt Phra Keo, the famous Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It was really interesting. Then we saw two more temples nearby. We
also went on a river trip somewhere outside Bangkok. The best thing about the trip was the food. The next time we have friends over for
dinner, I'm going to cook Thai food.
In Bangkok

Last summer, we spent our vacation in Thailand. We were very excited - it was our first trip there. We spent two days in Bangkok. Of course,
we got a river bus to the floating market. We bought some delicious fruit there. The next day we went to a very interesting temple called the
Temple of the Emerald Buddha. We didn't have time to visit any other temples. However, we went to two historic cities - Ayuthaya and
Sukhuthai. Both have really interesting ruins. Everything was great. it's impossible to say what was the best thing about the trip.
Modern Life

Modern Life magazine asked two people about their neighborhood.
Diana: My neighborhood is very convenient - it's near the shopping center and the bus station. It's also safe. But those are the only good
things about living downtown.
It's very noisy - the streets are always full of people! The traffic is terrible, and parking is a big problem! I can never park in my own
street. I'd like to live in the suburbs.
Victor: We live in the suburbs, and it's just too quiet! There aren't many shops, and there are certainly no clubs or theaters. There are a
lot of parks, good schools, and very little crime; but nothing really happens here. I would really love to live downtown.
Budapest

For many centuries, Budapest was two cities, with Buda in the west side of the river Danube and Pest on the east side. Budapest became one
city in 1872, and it has been the capital city of Hungary for about eighty years.
The population of Budapest is about three million, and the city is a very popular place for tourists. Visitors like to take boat rides along
the Danube. Budapest is also known for its exciting nightlife. The best time to visit is the summer since Budapest is very cold in the
winter.
Los Angeles

Los Angeles was founded in 1781. With 3.5 million people, it is now the biggest city in California and the second largest city in the United
States. It is famous for its modern freeways, its movie stars, and its smog. When the city is really smoggy, you can't see the nearby
mountains. The weather is usually dry and warm. Visitors like to go to the film studios and to drive along Hollywood Boulevard. There are
some good beaches near the city, and Los Angeles is also close to Disneyland.
Taipei

Since the finding of Taipei in the eighteenth century, the city has grown to a population of 2.3 million and has become the cultural,
industrial and administrative center of the island of Taiwan. Taipei is an exciting city, but the weather is humid and not always pleasant.
It's also a very busy city, and the streets are always full of people. There is an excellent museum that tourist visit. Taipei is a fairly
expensive city, but not more expensive than some neighboring cities such as Hong Kong and Tokyo. So more and more tourists go to Taipei to
shop.
Sleep

Most people need seven to eight hours sleep a day. Some people need less than this, and some people need more.
According to sleep expert Dr. Robert Schachter, many people have difficulty sleeping, but they do not know why. Most people know it is
important not drink coffee or tea before they go to bed both beverages have caffeine. Caffeine keeps people awake. However, not everybody
knows that some medicines, such as cold tablets, also have caffeine in them. Stress can cause insomnia, too. Busy people with stressful jobs
may not be able to sleep at night.
Dr. Schachter suggests: «You shouldn't use your bedroom as a TV room or an exercise room. You should use it for sleeping only. It's a good
idea to have a regular sleeping schedule. Get up and go to bed at the same time every day. It's also important not to eat before bedtime.
Eating may keep you awake. »
And if all this doesn't work, try counting sheep!
Trattoria Romana

Trattoria Romana is an excellent Italian restaurant. It has a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, and the service is very good. It's always
crowded, so make a reservation early. The menu is not very big. There are only four entrees on the menu, but everything is fresh. The chicken
with pasta is wonderful. Dessert is their specialty - rich and delicious! It's a little expensive but very good. You'll spend about $25 pre
person.
Dynasty

Last Saturday, I was the only customer at Dynasty, a new diner on 57th Street. It's not a good place to go. The waiters are slow and
unfriendly. The atmosphere is boring, and so is the menu. It specializes in American food - mostly steak and potatoes; but my steak was raw,
and the fries were greasy. It isn't cheap, either. It cost me $22. If you go to Dynasty, you certainly won't need a reservation. My advice,
however, is « Don't Go»
Beirut café

Beirut café is a great Lebanese restaurant. The specialty is meze - lots of different small dishes, some with meat or fish, and others with
vegetables. The atmosphere is lively, and the service is very friendly. There's live Lebanese music and dancing on weekends. Beirut Café is
surprisingly inexpensive - about $18 a person, but you need to make a reservation.
Antarctica

ANTARCTICA is the most southern continent in the world. It is like nowhere else on earth. Larger than Europe, and nearly twice the size of
Australia. It is an icy plateau with the south Pole at its centre. Antarctica is the coldest and windiest place in the world, even colder and
windier than the North Pole. In the summer, the sun shines for twenty-four hours a day, but in the winter it's completely dark for about
three months. Very few plants grow there, but there is some wildlife, including whales, seals, and penguins.
When Captain James Cooks sailed around the continent in the 1770s, he found no one living there. Today, a few scientists work in Antarctica,
but they only spend fairly few periods there. Many scientists in Antarctica are studying the ozone layer. The ozone layer is getting thinner
and thinner worldwide. The biggest « hole» is over Antarctica, where the weather is getting warmer. Scientists think that this cold and
lonely place can teach us a lot about the earth and how to keep it safe.

Not so long ago, people only used the telephone to make phone calls. Now, thanks to computers, people use their phones to do much more. They
can bank by phone, rent videos by phone, and even shop by phone. It is also possible to send letters and reports by faxing them over
telephone lines. People can even use their phone lines to send messages from one computer to, another one by electronic mail, or e-mail.
But you don't need to be at home or at the office to use the phone anymore. You can carry a cellular phone in your pocket or keep one in your
car. With a cellular phone, anyone who can talk and walk can also phone and walk. You don't have to look for a pay phone to make a call
anymore. Now you can take your calls with you everywhere.
My grandmother is more than ninety years old which makes her the oldest person in the whole family. Since her pilgrimage to Meccah in 1980, everybody is calling her “El Hadja”. Despite her old age, her memory is still fresh. She always tells us that many things used to be different when she was young.
My grandma used to begin her day very early. Before sunrise, she was already busy at work, while everybody else was still in bed.
Grandma used to do the house work by herself. She used to make clothes for her children. As for
her outdoor work, she used to raise some chicken for their eggs and sheep for milk and meat. She also
used to help males to grow vegetables.
When a member of the family was ill, she used to show him which herbs to use. They collected them
from a near forest. At that time many people used to cure illnesses by taking medicinal herbs.

My favourite holiday was last year. I went to Jamaica with my friend. We went by plane in October. The trip was very long and hard. The seats were very small and uncomfortable.
We stayed in a hotel in Montego Bay. The hotel was very big and beautiful. There were three swimming-pools, big gardens, a disco, a gym and five restaurants. The weather was horrible ! It was very hot and wet.
We got up early in the morning because we went to an excursion. We visited a lot of beaches. The beaches were very nice in Jamaica. We went to a small safari. We saw birds, crocodiles…
In the afternoon, we went shopping. I bought t-shirts, pictures, towels, coffee and figures .We had dinner in the hotel. The food was very good. There was pizza, meat, fish, fruit, typical Jamaica´s food, ice-cream, etc…
After that we went to the disco. We went to bed very late. We stayed in Jamaica for seven days. We came back to Spain by plane. We were sleeping all the trip. I loved Jamaica.
When I was a baby I couldn’t talk, but I could sleep 12 hours a day. Before I went to school I couldn’t read nor write, but I was able to speak English. When I visited Barcelona I couldn’t understand what people were saying, because I couldn’t speak Spanish then. In kindergarten I couldn’t add 2 + 2, but now I can do multiplication and division.
When I was 3 years old I couldn’t ride a bicycle , but now I can ride a bicycle and a horse! When I went to camp for the first time I couldn’t sail a boat. I will be able to sail 10-meter boats. In the beginning of first grade I couldn’t write Greek or English, but now I can write in both languages.
At the age of 5 years, I couldn’t manipulate a computer, now that I am 7, I can use a computer and an i-phone. When I was young I couldn’t play football, but now I can score lots of goals. In my second level grade I couldn’t swim very well, but
now I can swim long distances.

I live in a small town near London. There are some clothes shops and shoe shops. There is a restaurant but there isn’t an airport. There are two banks, a fire station and a market. There isn’t a factory so my dad goes to work by train every day. We live near the school. My favourite place is the park where I play football with my friends. We sometimes go to the theatre to London by bus.
I like my town very much.

Dear Dr khaled,
I’ m writing to seek your kind advice. I’m a four year Middle School student. I took my Brevet last June and had a pass with merit. The problem is that I’m facing a dilemma as to the choice of the stream in which I’ll’ register in
the Lycée.
My parents want me to register in the scientific stream whereas my choice goes for literary stream.Indeed, if I decided to register in the stream of my choice, I would realise the dream of my life which consists of becoming a translator. I would work very hard to get a literary stream baccalaureate which would allow me to register at a department of translation at university. ….
However, if I Followed my choice, my parents would be disappointed. They want me to become a doctor. …
In conclusion, I’m at crossroads in my educational career. I don’t know whether I must listen to my parents or decide about what to do with my school life on my own. What should I do?
Yours sincerely,
Karim
I live in a very old town which is surrounded by beautiful woods. It is a famous beauty spot. On weekends ,hundreds of people come from the city to see our town and to walk through the woods.Visitors have been asked to keep the woods clean and tidy.Litter baskets have been placed under the trees, but people still throw their rubbish everywhere .
Last Wednesday,I went for a walk in the woods. What I saw made me very sad. I counted seven old cars and three old refrigerators .The litter baskets were empty and the ground was covered with pieces of paper, cigarettes-ends ,old tyres ,empty bottles and rusty tins.Among the rubbish I found a sign which said:"Anyone who leaves litter in these woods will be prosecuted".

My name is Tom. I wake up in the morning at 7o’clock. My dad makes breakfast. After breakfast, I get dressed for high school. I don’t wear a uniform at school. I can wear anything I like. Usually, I walk to school with my friends. I am in the fourth year at Richmand high school. Next year, I hope to go to university, so I study very hard.
School starts at 9a.m and finishes at 4p.m. But I like to meet my friends before class. We meet in the library. We study and talk. At 9a.m, classes begin. I want to study journalism at university. So, I chose French, Spanish, music, economics and geography. My friends want to study Engineering and Science. So they take different classes.
Our classes are one hour long. Each subject has a different teacher that’s why we move from classroom to classroom. We have an hour for lunch. I meet my friends in the cafeteria for lunch.
Different schools have different hours. After school, I practise music or swimming. Then, I go home for dinner. After dinner, I always have homework to do.
The Dalton’s Sport Complex is in Rincon, an American city. It is big. It has got a football stadium. It holds 80 000 spectators. It is in the middle of the complex between the swimming pool and the restaurant. The Volley ball ground is on the right, near the restaurant. It has 8000 places. And the Tennis court is near the swimming pool. It has space for 9000 spectators.
In Britain, It is compulsory for everyone aged between 5 and 16 to go to school. Harry Potter goes to “Hogwarth” school. It is a comprehensive school. Comprehensive schools are schools for students aged between 11 to 16 .
School day starts at around ten to nine, when the teachers take the register. They call the students by their names to check who is present and who is absent. After registration, all students must assemble in the school Hall to listen to the headmaster. The headmaster reads a poem or a passage from a book. Then he says a prayer and informs the pupils and teachers about what has happened in the school. The lessons start around 9.30 when the assembly is over. The students study Maths, Science, Geography, Art, History and Drama.
School ends in the afternoon. After lunch, in the school canteen, the pupils have to walk in the playground for an hour, before going back to their classes. On weekends, the students don’t have to wear their uniforms so, they are always happy to put on their jeans and T-shirts.

Last summer, I went to Barcelona. I went with two friends by car. We stayed in a hotel in the city centre. The first evening, we went out to dinner to an Italian restaurant. After that we went out to a disco, there I met a foreign man, he was very funny. We also visited many monuments. For example: The Sacred Family Cathedral, Gaudi´s house and others. The next day, we went to buy some souveniers for our family and friends. One day we went out to Port Aventure. It is a funfairtheme park, where there are many attractions. We enjoyed ourselves a lot. The next day, we went to a beach resort near Tarragona, there we sunbathed. One day we rented a boat and we went sailing. I was afraid, because I can´t swim. The next day my friend Gloria was ill, we went to a hospital. After that we came back home, I drove her car because, she couldn´t drive.
Food Waste
Food is wasted all the time. People buy as much as they think they need. Then they leave food in the fridge past the expiration date, throw it out and buy more!
Where does your leftover food go? The garbage? And where does your garbage go? To landfills. Yard waste, which is landfilled, breaks down very slowly due to the lack of oxygen. As it decomposes, it produces methane gas and acidic leachate, which are both environmental problems."
People just don't care enough about the environment. We are wasting land for our food waste , which is 30% food! There are plenty of other ways to use your food instead of just throwing it away. Composing is helpful for the community and the environment. With the decomposed material, you can fertilize your flower and vegetable gardens, or even houseplants.
Food is a wonderful thing. Most of us are lucky to have plenty of it, yet we waste so much. Why not get involved and save the world from food waste? Don't waste food, compost it!

Bicycle Passenger
When I first told my wife that I am going to buy a bicycle next week and I am using it to get to work, she just laughed. But after I got the bike and began to pedal the three miles to work rather than take the car, I think she was impressed.
Of course, I had two good reasons for using a bicycle to commute to work:
The first was my need for exercise, and the second was to save money on gasoline. At first, I was a little bothered by the traffic, but now I am quite at ease and can move in and out among the cars with a good deal of speed and skill .My children are also impressed. They think that their Dad is “real cool.”

Nowadays, having a mobile phone have become more of a necessity for everyone than a luxury. Mobile phone is not only a tool for staying connected to your family and friends all the time but also serve the purpose of numerous devices and gadgets. Mobile phones have many functions: they come with camera, radio, calendar, calculator, stop watch, reminders and things to do, and so on. You do not have to carry a separate calendar, camera, audio and video player, voice recorder, calculator and all other gadgets that you need, when you have a mobile phone with all these features.
Mobile phones may be a great security for the parents as they can now be connected to their children every time. Parents are always concerned about their children’s safety as their children spend most of the time outside and are involved in more and more activities. Children should also be taught the proper time and place to use their Mobiles. Most parents set limits on the amount of calls that their kids can make. Children must also be taught not to use their phones during school hours unless there is an emergency

Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison was born on November 2nd, 1847 in Ohio, USA. He was a great American inventor. As a boy, he loved adventures. Later, he worked as a telegraph operator. At the age of twenty-two, he went to New Jersey, where he set up a factory. He was interested in electrical problems. During his carrier, he patented more than 1.000 inventions, including the electric light, the phonograph (talking machine) and the motion picture camera. Form 1879 to 1900, Edison produced most of his devices. The American call this period ‘’the age of Edison’’. Thomas Edison died in 1931.

Fast Food
Most of the children love eating fast food. This includes burgers, pizzas, hotdogs, fish and chips. Although such food is tasty, it doesn't provide us with enough vitamins, that our bodies need. This food is not very healthy as it usually contains a lot of fat. Eating fast food often can result in weight gain.
However, you can make a meal at the fast food restaurant healthier by choosing a burger which has vegetables in it, by skipping the fries and by having plain water instead of carbonated soft drinks.
No one can avoid being influenced by advertisements. Much as we may
pride ourselves on our good taste. We are no longer free to choose the things we
want, for advertising exerts a subtle influence on us. In their effort to persuade
us to buy this or that product.
Advertisers discovered years ago, that all of us love to get something for
nothing. These days, they not only offer free samples, but free cars, free houses
and free trips round the world as well.
They devise hundreds of competitions which will enable us to win huge
sums of money. Radio and television have made it possible for advertisers to
capture the attention of millions of people in this way.

the one you are served in quick.

taste our hot, rich and nutritious hamburger. Our service is the fastest of all the

Whales are lovely intelligent animals. However they become endangered
species because many people hunt them.
Dramatically the fishermen transform a large part of whales meat into cosmetic
or pets products. It s important to know that whales play a vital role in the
balance of our environment and killing them would destabilise the ecological
system. Eventually Green Peace has strongly criticised this horrible practice.
Therefore we must protect them. Moreover the United Nations should stop
whales hunting by imposing severe sanctions against whales offenders.
Coca Cola was originally invented by john Pemberton a pharmacist in
Atlanta, Georgia, USA. In 1886, he made up a new kind of medicine to cure
tiredness and headaches. But it tasted bad and almost nobody wanted to buy it.
In the first year, Pemberton gained fifty dollars from it.
Then, a businessman bought the recipe and advertised it, no as a medicine
but as a refreshing drink. All he did was mix it with water and carbon dioxide!
It worked. Everybody wanted to buy it and in only a few years Coca Cola
became the national drink in the United States.
During the Second World War, American soldiers drank three million
bottles of Coca Cola a day! They helped to spread the name and the taste for
coke all over the world. Today, millions of bottles are drunk every day all over
the world.
Most children are very stressed during exams. Therefore, their results are
generally below their capacities. So, doctors are thinking to find a
solution to reduce this stress. So, what can we do to help them?
Preparation for the test is very important and it starts at home.
Preparation is the work that pupils do before the test. The majority of the
pupils revise only the week of the exams. This method may possibly be
good for few children, but for the majority it may well be the cause of
their failure in the exams.
Preparation in groups may be the best solution to get good results.
You may ask me how? I will tell you. Children who revise in groups may
have better chance of success than those who revise alone because when
they work they can help each other by asking and answering questions
that they might have in exams. Group preparation may also reduce stress
if the children test each other just if they were taking an exam
You like Algerian food, don t you?
Bourek is a famous Algerian dish, isn t it?
A big competition for delicious Bourek will take place at El Hana
Restaurant next week. You want to participate? Think of your special
recipe using our ingredients:
- Pancakes - tomatoes - onions- - potatoes - olives minced meat - cheese -
tuna - egg - salt and pepper.
Winners will get free weekend for two at El Aurassi Hotel in Algiers.
Most children suffer from test anxiety when they take exams. As a result, they
perform below their abilities. So what can we do to help them reduce stress and
score their best? To find out the answer to this question, USA Today spoke to
Professor Malcolm Kane of the University of Texas. We asked him to start
talking about exam preparation. Here is his answer: preparation for the test is
very important and it starts at home. Perhaps I should explain the meaning of
the term preparation. By preparation I mean the work that pupils do before the
test. But just how do you go about it? You may ask. Well, the majority of pupils
revise for exams alone. This method may possibly be suitable for some
children, but on the other hand it may well be the cause of the failure of many
others.
Harry and his diet
My friend Harry has always been fat, but things went so bad recently that he
decided to go on diet a week ago. First of all, he wrote out a list of all the foods
which he mustn t eat. The list included most of thing Harry loves like: butter,
rice, chocolate and sweets.
Yesterday, I paid him a visit. I was not surprised to see that he was as fat
as he has ever been. He led me into his room and immediately hid a parcel
under his desk. It was obvious that he was embarrassed. When I asked him what
he was doing, he started laughing and then put the box on the desk.
Harry explained that his diet was so strict that he had to reward himself
occasionally. Then, he showed me the contents of the box. It contained five
large bars of chocolate, some biscuits and three bags of sweets.
The robot is the most amazing invention that man has ever made. For
example, in 1987 an American surgeon was able to instruct a robot from a New
York hospital to do an operation in Strasbourg. In the same year astronauts
were able to pilot another robot to take pictures of Mars. Robots are already
capable of doing many difficult and dangerous jobs. You can see them working
in car factories, in mines, in fire departments and in nuclear plants.
Many people think that robots are stupid. This may be true for the old
generation robots. But the new generation robots are not stupid machines at all.
They can hear and speak. They can even smell. Someday soon, I m sure
scientists will be able to invent robot cooks, which you can instruct to prepare
your breakfast in the morning. They may be able to invent robot students to do
your home work while you just lie in your bed listening to music. And who
knows? They might even invent robot mechanics, which will repair broken
robots. Can robots become the rivals of man in the future? Well they cannot for
one simple reason. They have only artificial intelligence, so it is impossible for
them to be man s rivals.
Breakfast is the most famous British meal. But people in Britain do not
have time for a big breakfast on weekdays anymore.
Lunch is not a very important meal in Britain in weekdays. City workers
don t usually eat at home. They have sandwiches or light food in a pub or in a
restaurant. Most people have only one hour for lunch but the most important
lunch is Sunday traditional lunch. The main dishes are: roasted potatoes and
steamed vegetables and of course pudding which is a cake served with cream.
Dinner is the evening meal. It s the big meal of the day that all the
members of the family take together.
The British are the biggest sweet eaters in the world. For them, any time is
eat a sweet time : tea break at work, recreation period at school, watching TV
at home, in the cinema or theatre, Christmas, birthdays, mother s day, St
Valentine s day are occasions for the British to offer sweets.
Joanna and Amy Roberts live in Cambridge. Sometimes their mother is out
in the evenings (she teaches evening classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays) and
Mr Roberts is too tired to cook so they get a takeaway.
Joanna s favourite is fish and chips. They get it from the fish and chip shop
near them. The woman in the shop puts the fish and chips in a paper bag and the
children pour salt and vinegar on to it.
Amy likes pizzas, so they ring up a company called the flying Pizza . A
van comes to their house with their pizzas. It s a strange van with a yellow
telephone on top of it.
Their father loves Indian takeaways and so sometimes they get their food
from the Indian restaurant in Mill Road. They ask for meat or fish or vegetables
in a curry sauce, which is sometimes very hot. They always order pillau rice,
which is yellow.
Mrs Roberts likes Chinese food so they get it from the Chinese restaurant
in Roberts Street. They order spring rolls and fried rice.
There are many differences between London and Canberra although both
of them are capital cities. London is the capital of Britain whereas
Canberra is the capital of Australia.
Canberra is located in the south east of the state of New South Wales
on the Molonglo River. London is located in the south east of England,
on both sides of the Thames River. Canberra is less populated (300, 000
inhabitants) than London (ten million inhabitants).
London was founded 43 AD by the Romans; it is much older than
Canberra whose construction started in 1913.
Both cities are commercial centres, but Canberra is less important than
London which is one of the greatest cities in the word and a big financial
place with a great number of banks and insurance companies.
London, alike Canberra is also a cultural centre with art galleries. The
Australian National Gallery in Canberra is however, not as large as
London Museum.
In both cities there are big universities, libraries and monuments set up
to celebrate heroes, such as Captain Cook Memorial in Canberra and
Trafalgar Square with the statue of Admiral Nelson in London.
On week days, British people are busy working all days long. They don t have
time to prepare their meals at home. They buy takeaways . What s a take
away ?
It s a quick meal we get in a restaurant but we take it home to eat. The English
takeaway is a speciality of fish and chips. It s a kind of fried fish served with
chips. We find takeaway restaurants everywhere in Great Britain, like the
Jack s fish and chips corner restaurant. They are typical of the British life. On
week-ends eating a Sunday lunch is a tradition in the British families. The
main dishes are roasted beef and the delicious Yorkshire pudding. But the
pudding is not a cake and it isn t served as a dessert. It s a kind of salted pie.
The hamburger is the most eaten food in the whole world. An American chef
called Louis Lassen made and sold the first hamburgers in Conneticut in 1895.
Louis called them hamburgers because some sailors, from Hamburg in
Germany, gave him the recipe. Hamburgers became a favorite in America in the
early part of the twentieth century. Their popularity grew even more after the
Second World War. Teenagers preferred fast to family meals and bought them
in large quantities.
In 1948 two Dock and Mac Donald opened a drive-in hamburger
restaurant in San Bernardino, California. Since then over 26,000 Mc Donald s
restaurants have opened world wide and now 35 millions Mc Donald s
hamburgers are eaten everyday in 115 Countries.
Tommy Harrison is exactly 100 years old, he s a retired engineer. His wife,
Maude, died 14 years ago, they had no children and now he lives alone in his
flat in Bristol, Tommy has smoked all his life. First he smoked cigarettes,
about10 a day, but 40 years ago he changed to a pipe. He has only been ill once
in his life; and that was just before the first world war, when he had rheumatic
fever. The only time he visits his doctor is to get certificate to say that he can
still drive his car.
Every day he has a full English breakfast: bacon, eggs, toast and
marmalade. He went abroad once, to France during the war. He says I still go
dancing and swimming but I don t want to live for ever, perhaps 12 more
months. My father lived until he was 99 .
The British Isles
To the North West of France, we can see two large islands and smaller ones
round them. They are called the British Isles. The larger of the two is called
Great Britain. The smaller one, to the west, is Ireland.
There are three countries in Great Britain: Scotland in the North, England in the
south, and Wales in the west. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, Cardiff is the
capital of Wales, London is the capital of England and also the capital of the
whole United Kingdom.
Ireland has two parts: in the south there is the Irish Republic or Eire, with its
capital Dublin. The north of Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. It is called
Northern Ireland or Ulster. Its capital is Belfast. London is one of the most
important cities in the world. The oldest part is quite busy. It is the financial
centre of Europe. Manchester is a big city, too. But it is not as important as
London. However, it is more important than any other town in England.
Finding healthy balanced diet food can be tricky, especially in a world where
you can find a fast food franchise on every corner.
Food is made up of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, mineral salt and
fibre. Vitamins are very important for natural health. Vitamins A, B, C, D and E
all serve different purposes in the body. Mineral salt include iron, calcium,
sodium and iodine which all serve different purposes. Fibre is needed for
digestion. A lack of fibre can lead to serious colon and rectum issues.
To have a healthy balanced diet you have to eat foods that make up these
components.
In order to find healthy balanced diet foods you must first calculate your
activity level. These foods would include bread, cereal, rice and pasta for the
carbohydrates. The proteins would include meat, poultry, fish and eggs.
The vitamins can be obtained from eating vegetables and fruit. Both these
groups are very important.
Milk, yoghurt and cheese are also very important. They are rich sources of
calcium which is vital for bone strength.
Fats should also be consumed but only in moderation. Oils and sweets can
be very beneficial but in very small amounts.
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, on April 26th, 1564. His
father was called John and his mother Mary Arden. William was calm and
modest and he used to be very brilliant at school. His teachers taught him
English and Latin. He was obliged to leave school very early in other to help his
family that had problems of money.
In 1582, he married Anne Hathaway who gave him three children:
Susanna and twins: Hamlet and Judith. Three years later, he went to London
and worked in a theatre. There, he started composing new tragedies which were
an immediate success.
He became a famous and wealthy actor, and a great dramatic poet. He
wrote thirty eight plays. Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet were some of them. Pupils
learnt them all over the world. He died on April 23rd, 1616.
From WIKIPDIA
Last week, a woman had a lunch in a small restaurant. When she finished,
she looked for her bag but it wasn t there. She was looking for it when the
waiter arrived. Did you have a good lunch, madam? He asked. Yes, thank
you. She answered. But I can t pay because I can t find my bag. I put it on that
chair. She added. The waiter laughed and went out. Two minutes later, he
returned with the lady s bag. I m sorry. Here is your bag. My dog took it into
the garden. It often does this. he said.
The Dolphin Restaurant
Are you looking for a great restaurant? Do you know where to find perfect
grilled fish? Do you want the best fresh sea food? Well, you ll find all this at
the Dolphin Restaurant in Tamanfoust, a beautiful sea side village.
Where will you find us? Walk down the principal street, turn right on the
Ruins Street, the restaurant is near the port. It is a small French house with a
beautiful little garden, opened in summer. If you go early, try to get a place
upstairs. They are nicer than the one downstairs and the service is better.
To begin your meal, try the tasty, spicy, grilled salmon on the rice salad
prepared at your table. Grilled fish is the specialty of this restaurant but the
different fish soup is delicious, too. For dessert, try special coffee ice- cream on
chocolate cake or other excellent drinks.
The dolphin is opened everyday except on Saturday. You don t need to
book during the week, but on weekends it is necessary
Forests are very important. They produce the oxygen we breathe everyday.
They are the source of wood and the home of many plants and animals. They
are also comfortable places where we can relax during week-ends and holidays.
Unfortunately, every summer we hear about terrible forest fires which
destroy millions of trees. Most of these fires are caused by man.
When people go for picnic, they mustn t leave the forest before putting out
their fires.
And, of course, car drivers and passengers mustn t throw cigarettes out of their
car windows.
If we want to see and keep our country always beautiful, we must protect
nature.
Seven per cent (7%) of British school children go to private schools called
independent schools. There are about 2.400 independent schools and they have

Parents pay for these schools about 50£ a term for a private nursery to
3,000£ a term for secondary school. Some independent schools are called
preliminary schools because they prepare the children for the Common
Entrance Exam which they take at the age of 13. This exam (CEE) is for entry
into the best schools.
The most famous schools are called public schools and they have a long
history and tradition. Children of rich families often go to the same public
school as their parents and their grand parents Eton School is the best known
of these schools.

In the future, I want to be a train driver because I love trains. I like speed
and I am fond of travelling. Daddy, who is the station master of the little town
where we live, thinks it is a very good idea. Mammy does not. She says I shall
make myself very dirty and who will wash my clothes? Herself of course and
she will never be able to do it with all her other work.
My- sister Jane thinks that it is better if I become an air pilot. I can t
become an air pilot because I do not have enough education. I am not a good
pupil in class and I could never pass the examination but I know I shall easily
pass the test set up by the railways.
One of the conditions to be a train driver is to have a good eyesight which
I have and a perfect colour vision which I also have. I never used my eyes in
reading books not even my lessons. So there is a justification in being a bad
pupil. Jane, my sister, who is always first of her class wears glasses!
Progress of science has deeply changed man s life on earth. Many
inventions are improving our way of living, making our life easier and more
comfortable. New medicines and vaccines have doubled man s lifespan.
Scientists have also helped to the development of technology. The computer
is the best example of these modern achievements. It has facilitated our lives in
different fields.
Computers can help us doing our tasks in a little time and very quickly, the
access to internet has given many people the possibility to study at home, send
or receive messages in a short time. They can also communicate or chat with
anyone else all over the world.

succeed. If you don t make efforts, you will never feel the pleasure of success.
If you do not work by your own, no one will give you anything. Perhaps
someone will help you once or twice but won t continue helping you forever.
You are pupils, start by working to succeed at your exams. It s your last year at
the middle school, so try to get good results and go to the secondary school.
This will be possible only if you have good results. If your general average is
equal or superior to the pass mark 10/20, you ll be admitted to the first year of
secondary school where you will spend three years before you take your
baccalaureate exam. Then, you ll probably realize your best dream and feel the
pleasure of success.

Avicenna (Arabic, Ibn Sina), 980- 1037 was a Persian philosopher who
spent his life as a physician and scholar-in-residence at many Islamic courts. He
died while in service in Isfahan.
Many of his writings were translated in west. Avicenna s works are concise,
précis and complete, the most notable being a philosophical encyclopaedia. As
did other Muslim scholars of Greek school, he attempted to put together
philosophy and Islam. For Avicenna, philosophy was the true path to
understanding. His summaries of Aristotle reveal a Neoplatonic outlook,
especially in his emphasis on the dualism of mind and matter. He saw matter as
passive and creation as the act of instilling existence into this passive substance;
only in God are being and existence one. Avicenna also wrote numerous works
on medicine. His best known is the Canon of Medicine, Based primarily on
Greco-roman medical tracts. An extraordinarily popular work, it was translated
into Latin and served as a foundation of medical learning in European
universities for centuries.
My grandmother is more than ninety years old which makes her the
oldest person in the whole family. Since her pilgrimage to Mecca in 1980,
everybody is calling her El Hadja . Despite her old age, her memory is
still fresh. She always tells us that many things used to be different when
she was young.
My grandma used to begin her day very early. Before sunrise, she was
already busy at work, while everybody else was still in bed.
Grandma used to do the house work by herself. She used to make clothes
for her children. As for her outdoor work, she used to raise some chicken for
their eggs and sheep for milk and meat. She also used to help males to grow
vegetables.
When a member of the family was ill, she used to show him which herbs
to use. They collected them from a near forest. At that time many people used
to cure illnesses by taking medicinal herbs.

Half a century ago , the vast majority of people of virtuality in every country
used to live in the countryside . They used to work in agriculture , the primary sector of the economy .
Uncle Hassan was one of them . He used to be a farmer . Every morning , he used to get up early to milk his cows before breakfast . He used to spend the whole day in the field cultivating different seasonal crops . He didn't use to go shopping in the town very often because he produced everything he needed .
Today , uncle Hassan lives in the town Where he works in a factory . It's the second sector of the economy . He usually wakes up at 6 o'clock . Before going to work , he buys milk , bread and some fruit . He spends the day working till 4 :00 p.m .
Uncle Hassan is tired of always pilling boxes .

Dear aunt Hakima ;
Can you help me? At the end of every term school,we have a through examination in every subject.
I always revise my lessons for these exams, but on the day of the exam, I feel really anxious and I get into panic when I see the test .I never manage to score well. Please tell me what I should do.
Yours ; Rachida .
Dear daughter Rachida ;
Don’ t worry ,it is quite normal when taking your exam, your class-mates feel the same as you do.
But you are right to think that panic is a big problem. Many pupils fail their exams because they
loose self-control . There are three main reasons:
they take the exam just for the scores, they are not positive, they adopt the wrong approach .
First , you should start thinking positively, secondly keep in mind that you can’ t do the exam
for the scores. Finally ,make sure you don’ t answer the exam questions as soon as the teacher gives the paper.

One afternoon , a big and ugly wolf was very hungry in a deep forest .
While he was looking for some food , a little girl came along . She was carrying a basket of food. He stopped her and asked :"Where are you going little girl ?" She answered that she was carrying some food to her grandmother who lived in the forest .
"And where is your grandmother's house?". asked the ugly wolf . The girl showed him the way and disappeared .
The wolf arrived to the house before the girl . He came in , put grandmother's night cap round his head and slept in her bed

Hi, Helen!
- In Algeria school is compulsory for both boys and girls from the age of 6 to the age of 16. There is a primary, middle and secondary school.
- Children used to spend six years in primary school. Now, they have to study only five years. In the fifth grade they take an exam to go to middle school. This new system started in 2003.
- In middle school, they study different subjects which are taught in Arabic. However, they learn French, English and Berber in some regions. At the end of the fourth grade they sit an exam called ‘B.E.M’. It lasts three days. If they pass this exam, they will go to secondary school where they are placed in different streams according to their abilities. They spend three years there. At the end of the third year, they have an exam called ‘baccalaureat’. If they get it, they enter university.
Sincerely
Safa

To be in good health is one of the greatest pleasures of life. Without health a person isn’t able to enjoy wealth (money) or anything else. That’s why we say: Health is better than wealth.
Young people of the past didn’t understand how to keep healthy. Many nations suffered from illnesses and great numbers of young men and women died. When an illness
appeared, it spread quickly over whole countries.
The causes of illnesses are germs or microbes. A germ is a very small living organism
Which you can see only with a microscope. Germs can be carried by air, by food, by water
Or by touch. Some animals and insects may also carry germs from person to person.
New York city is one of the world’s largest cities and the most important centres of business and culture. It is situated in the north east of the USA. It has got a population of ten million inhabitants. The climate is humid.
A tourist can visit many interesting and exciting places in New York city. The Statue of Liberty is the most famous one. It was a gift from France in 1886. There are boats that take tourists every hour to visit it. New York has also many places of interests such as: The Metropolitan Museum, Greenwich Village and the most famous street which is Fifth Avenue with its luxurious stores, hotels, churches , clubs, museums and fashionable apartment houses. It is more than ten kilometres long.
In New York City there was the World Trade Centre. It was the tallest building in the city. It had two towers. But it was destroyed on September 11th 2001. New York is the capital of the state of New York and the federal capital of the USA is Washington.

Hi, Paul
I just want to tell you what happened to me during the holidays. I went to Taiwan. I really enjoyed myself there. But on the last day, I had a terrible experience. I went fishing on a beautiful lake. Unfortunately, I couldn’t catch any fish, and I got bored. I decided to go swimming. When I stood up, my wallet fell out of my pocket and into the water. It had all my money, my passport, my plane ticket- everything. I jumped into the lake to look for it, but I didn’t find anything.
The next morning, I wasn’t able to leave the hotel. I had no money to pay the bill and no plane ticket or passport to go home. So what could I do ? I called my boss and asked him: “ Could you send me some money, please ?” Of course, he did it.
What about you ? Did you enjoy your holidays ?

By the year 2100, life on earth might change a lot .Our towns might grow enormously. Small towns and villages might disappear completely; we might live in cities built on the sea . Perhaps our supplies of oil will run out.
Scientists may possibly, develop new forms of energy .They will find new ways of growing food .At least let’s hope so. I can’t believe that our grand children will still eat as much natural food as we do. They could live underground .
Robots might cook their meals for them .They may well speak the same language .They will probably spend less time at work because machines will do a lot of jobs man does today .They will surely travel faster .But I don’t know if they’ll enjoy themselves or not .Enjoyment may not mean anything then who knows?
Today, people can do many things they couldn’t do years ago. For example, people can drive cars, take photographs, forecast the weather and do many
other exceptional things. They can even fly across the ocean and go to the moon
in spaceships without any difficulty.
However, Man’s present ability to fly is the result of past achievements by
exceptional pilots like the Wright brothers and Charles Lindbergh. The former was able to fly the first plane in 1903 whereas the latter was able to make the first solo nonstop flight in 1927.
In the near future, man will certainly be able to go to space by a new type of
spaceship in which the future astronauts will be a new generation of robots. These
robots might well go on missions of exploration to the different planets which won’t be a secret !

Dear Antonella
-The past few days I’ve done a lot of hard thinking about what happened last week . I want you to know that every thing that I’m about to say is coming from the bottom of my heart . I know that it will be very difficult for you to accept my apology , but I want you to think about our friendship as well .
-The main reason I decided to write you this letter is because our friendship is too valuable to lose over silly argument . I feel that I could have handled the situation in a better way but you never gave me chance to speak . I hope this letter will give us both a chance to understand one another better .
- I admit that I was wrong for telling you that you were dumb(stupid) but the reason for that is I did not agree with what you were saying. I want you to know that I’m very sorry and this is a special letter from me to you , saying that I love you I think that I have made the right decision. Please write me back .

Preparation for the test is very important and it starts at home. Perhaps I should explain the meaning of the term preparation.
By preparation I mean the work that pupils do before the test. The majority of pupils revise for exams alone. This method may possibly be suitable for some children. But on the other hand it may well be the cause of the failure of many others.
What I mean is that the pupils who revise in groups may have better chances of success than those who revise alone. When they work in groups, they help one another by asking and answering questions that they might have in exams. Group preparation may also reduce stress if the children practise under test conditions. I mean if they test each other just as if they were taking an exam.

Dear Cindy;
Let me tell you about a typical day in my life.
My alarm clock rings at 6.00 every morning and I usually get up at once .Then I have a quick shower, have breakfast and go to school.
I generally go to school by train. I don’t often get a seat because the train is overcrowded. My lessons begin at 8.00 and finish at 4.00. After school hours,
I sometimes go to the school club to practice my favorite sport, tennis .Afterwards, I go home.
As soon as I get home, I relax for an hour or two, then sit down to do my homework for the next day. I don't watch TV, I prefer chatting on the net .By
midnight, I become rather tired, so I go to my room and sleep until the alarm clock rings the next morning.

Once upon a time, there was a King and a Queen who eagerly wished to have a child. One day, while the Queen was bathing, a frog crept out of the water and told her that she will soon have a baby. Eventually, the Queen gave birth to a very pretty girl. For this occasion, the King ordered a big feast and invited the twelve good fairies for dinner.
All the fairies came to the party among them Caraboss, the bad fairy who wasn’t invited because there were only twelve golden plates and cups.
After dinner, eleven fairies gave magic presents to the baby princess and forecasted nice things for her future. However, Caraboss said that this little princess will in her fifteenth year, prick her finger with a spindle and die. The twelfth fairy whose wish still remained said that the princess will not die, but she will sleep for one hundred years.
When Beauty was 15, she pricked her finger with a spindle and fell dead. Everyone went to sleep. So, the princess and all the people in the castle slept.
After 100 years, a young prince came to find the sleeping princess. At last, he came to the tower and opened the princess’ room where Beauty was sleeping. As soon as the prince kissed her, the princess opened her eyes and awoke. Finally all the people were brought back to life. The prince married the princess and lived happily ever after.
I am happy to join you today in what will go down in the history of our nation as the greatest demonstration of freedom.
There are those who are asking “when will you be satisfied?” We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of unspeakable horrors of police brutality. No, we are not satisfied, and will not be satisfied until justice becomes a reality for all.
I say to you today, my friends, I have a dream that one day this nation will realize that all men are created equal. I have a dream that one day the sons of slave slaw owners will be able to sit down at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state of racial injustice, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my little four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their characters. I have a dream that one day little black boys and black girls will join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.
This is our hope. This is the faith I go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to work together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

In Hollywood, everybody wants to be rich, famous, and beautiful. Nobody wants to be old, unknown, and poor. For Hollywood kids, life can be difficult because they grow up in such an unreal atmosphere. Their parents are ambitious, and the children are part of the parents’ ambitious.
Parents pay for extravagant parties, expensive cars, and designer clothes. When every dream can come true, kids learn the value of nothing because they have everything. A 13-year-old boy, Trent Maguire, has a driver, credit cards, and unlimited cash to do what he wants when he wants. “One day, I’ll earn more than my Dad,” he boasts.
Parents can buy care and attention for their kids because they have no time to give it themselves. Amanda’s mother employs a personal trainer, a nutritionist, a bodyguard, chauffeur, a singing coach and counselor to look after all her 15-year-old daughter’s needs. Often there is no parent at home most days, so kids decide whether to make their own meals or go out to restaurants, when to watch television or do homework. They organize their own social lives. They play no childhood games. They become adults before they ‘re ready. Hollywood has always been the city of dreams. The kids in Los Angeles live unreal lives where money, beauty, and pleasure are the only god. Will children around the world soon start to think the same? Or do they already ?
Doctor Grandma
At 100, Leila Steward is America’s oldest doctor.
Dr. Leila Steward is a special kind of doctor. She’s worked for 70 years as a doctor for children. She was 100 years old in February. That means she’s the oldest doctor in the United States. She gives good advice and she works hard. Sometimes she works as much as 10 hours a day, six days a week. Denise Jacob, the mother of two small children says “she has so much experience that she can look at a child and know what the problem is.”
The truth is that Steward, who graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1928, is a special doctor. “She always looks at the family. She knows how a family can help a child have good health,” says David Jones, 45, a friend.
She is the third child in a family with 12 children. Her family lived in Portal, Georgia. Her father was a farmer and her mother was a housewife. She has one daughter, Mary, age 67. When Mary was a child she worked at home.
Why is Dr. Steward so healthy? The grandmother says “I eat a lot of vegetables, meat, cheese and milk, and I love to work as a doctor.” She wanted to stop work when her husband died, in 1990, at age 91, but she decided to work more. “When I can’t see or think, I’ll stop,” she says. “I’d like to die here in my office when I’m working.”

In England, children start secondary school at the age of 11. In the first two years of secondary school, all the students study the same subjects. They are: English, Maths, Science, design and technology, information and communication technology, history, geography, a foreign language, art and design, music, citizenship and sport. When students are 14, they can choose the subjects that they like, but some subjects ( eg: Maths, English, science, and sport) are still compulsory.
At the age of 15-16, students take national exams called GCSEs ( General Certificate of Secondary Education exams). After these exams, about 25% of students leave school and find jobs. The other 75% stay at school. They study two, three or four school subjects and take advanced level exams ( A levels) when they are 18.
Most students in England ( about 90% ) go to state secondary schools. State schools are free. The other 10% go to private schools. Some of these schools are famous, and very expensive. It costs about £ 24,000 a year to study at Eton College.
Tonight, Nadir is going to stay at home because he wants to write a letter to his friend Paul.
Tomorrow morning, he will have Maths and English at school but he will be free in the afternoon .So he is going to help his father .They are going to repair the roof of their old garage .It is near of their house . In the evening, he will go outside with his friends .He will have plenty of time to play videos games with them.

VEGETARIAN UK
More and more people in the UK (United Kingdom) go veggie; they cut out meat and animal products. According to the vegetarian society, there are more than four million people, now. There is even a ‘National Vegetarian Week’ organized every year to encourage people to become vegetarians. Visit a British supermarket and you will see a lot of vegetarian ingredients and prepared meals.
So, why do Brits give up eating meat? Simply because some of them don’t like to kill animals and others say that they reduce the risk of certain cancers, obesity and health problems. They also prefer to have organic food rather than processed ones because they are more nutritious and healthy. Many people buy organic fruits and vegetables every week in their local market. They are more expensive but they taste better, they say.

Dear Mr Reid, I have seen your advertisement on the internet and I am writing to apply for a summer job as a kitchen helper in your camp.
I am a 17-years-old student from Italy, and I can already speak some English, as you can see. I'm about to finish school, but I'd love to spend these summer holidays in a different way.
I'm a self confidant, reliable, and hard-working person. I worked as a waitress in a restaurant last year .I'm interested in doing this job because I have always loved cooking and I get every day the dinner ready at home, so I can say I have some "kind of experience". Moreover, I am a person who loves working with children , I have many small cousins with whom I spend lot of time.
I would d like you to tell me how much free time off would I have to explore Scotland, if possible, so that I can choose which places to visit in advance.
I look forward to hearing from you, Kind regards, Marta

Learning English
More people are trying to learen english than any other language in the world . English is the language of political negotiations and international business. It has become the international language of science and midicine. Internatonal treaties say passenger airplane pilots must speak english.
English is the major foreign language taught in most schools in South America and Europe . school children in the Philippines and Japan begin learning English at an early age. English is the official language of more than seventy-five countries including Britain, Canada the United states,Australia and South Africa .
In countries where many different language are spoken English is often used as an official language to help people communicate . India is a good example .English is the common language in this country where at least twenty-four languages are spoken by more than one million people.
Kate and the internet
Kate's first class starts at eight o’clock in the morning and it’s 1.30a.m now. The only sound that you can hear in Kate's small room is the clicking of a computer keyboard. Her mum does no longer know what to do. Everyday, it’s the same. She goes to bed half an hour later.“Kate does no longer pay attention to her studies or to the report she has to present next week. She ignores all types of homework.”Her mother says. She cares only about the conversations she carries on with people from all over the world without caring about her grades or her friends in real life”. Kate who is a school student, spends about 75hours per week online. "I can’t stop. I have lost contact with all my friends in real life."
The Internet access in American households increases, that’s why the number of teenagers who spend a long time of their lives online, has increased too. Psychologists say “Look out! an increasing number of teens are going into a new form of addiction “. In an interview Kate declared:’I'm destroying my future and I am becoming isolated from the society,’ ‘I failed English last year... I didn’t care about my studies but at least, I feel free. In fact, I can talk to others about any topic without being afraid of the consequences”. She added” I have found people who are ready to listen to my words “

Computing
Over the past few years, computers technology has started to change many things in our lives. One of these teaching and learning. Many people believe that the internet will improve student's lives but in my opinion, the costs may be outweigh the benefits (advantages).
One future affect of the internet on academic study is that the number of sessions student attend may be reduced ,this because students do not have to spend much time at the university . The same may be true of sessions ,if they're able to put their lessons on the internet ,they may choose to do this from home.
Apart from the negative effect that the internet may have on students relationship I think we also have to consider the disadvantage to student' health.
Studying involves long hours reading books and writing assignments (tasks) .In addition ,these activities are usually done alone. Going to university ,schools offers students an opportunity to meet others. If these lessons are made on the internet then students can suffer physically and mentally
whereas I can appreciate that the internet will be interesting source of information for students I may not agree that is the best because it develops an unhealthy dependence on it .
ADHESIVE TAPE
Richard G. Drew (1899-1980) invented masking tape and clear adhesive tape (also called cellophane tape or Scotch tape). Drew was an engineer for the 3M company (the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing).
Drew's first tape invention was a masking tape made for painters in 1923 (this tape was designed to help painters paint a straight border between two colors). This early masking tape was a wide paper tape with adhesive on only the edges of the tape - not in the middle. Drew made an improved tape called Scotch (TM) Brand Cellulose Tape in 1930. This tape was a clear, all-purpose adhesive tape that was soon adopted worldwide. The first tape dispenser with a built-in cutting edge was invented in 1932 by John A. Borden, another 3M employee.
AEROSOL SPRAY CAN
The forerunner of the aerosol can was invented by Erik Rotheim of Norway. On November 23, 1927, Rotheim patented a can with a valve and propellant systems - it could hold and dispense liquids.
The first aerosol can (a can than contains a propellant [a liquefied gas like flurocarbon] and has a spray nozzle) was invented in 1944 by Lyle David Goodloe and W.N. Sullivan. They were working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and were trying to find a way to spray and kill malaria carrying mosquitos during World War II for the soldiers overseas. The "clog-free" spray valve was invented by Robert H. Abplanal in 1953.
The first spray paint was invented by Edward H. Seymour in 1949. Seymour's wife Bonnie had given him the idea of an aerosol applicator for paint. The first spray paint he developed was aluminum colored. Seymour formed the company, Seymour of Sycamore, Inc. of Chicago, USA, which is still in operation.
CELLULAR PHONE
The first automatic analog cellular phone was made in the 1960's. Commercial models were introduced in Japan by NTT on December 3, 1979. They were introduced in Scandinavia in 1981, in Chicago, USA, on October 13, 1983 (by Motorola), and in Europe in the late 1980's. Early mobile FM (frequency modulation radio was invented by Edwin H. Armstrong in 1935) radio telephones had been in use in the USA since 1946, but since the number of radio frequencies are very limited in any area, the number of phone calls was also very limited. Only a dozen or two calls could be made at the same time in an area. To solve this problem, there could be many small areas (called cells) which share the same frequencies. But when users moved from one area to another while calling, the call would have to be switched over automatically without losing the call. In this system, a small number of radio frequencies could accommodate a huge number of calls. This cellular phone concept was devised by a team of researchers at Bell Labs in 1947, but there were no computers available to do the switching. As small inexpensive computers were developed, cell phones could be produced. Motorola holds the US patents for the cell phone. Henry Taylor Sampson and George H. Miley hold a 1968 patent (US patent #3,591,860) on a "gamma electric cell," which is not a component of cellular phones.
LEGO
Legos (TM) are a very popular interlocking plastic toy. The LEGO toy company was founded by Ole Kirk Christiansen of Denmark in 1932, but the company then sold mostly wooden toys. The word LEGO was formed from two Danish words, "LEg GOdt," which mean "play well." Christiansen was a carpenter from the Danish village of Billund. The interlocking plastic blocks (the stud and tube coupling system) were invented by Godtfred Christiansen (Ole's son), and patented in 1958. Lego toys were first sold in the USA in 1961. LEGO people were introduced in 1974.
Safety Pin: Inventions
The safety pin was invented by Walter Hunt in 1849. Hunt 1795-1859) patented the safety pin on April 10, 1849 (patent No. 6,281). Hunt's pin was made by twisting a length of wire. Hunt invented the safety pin in order to pay a debt of $15; he eventually sold the rights to his patent for $400.
Walter Hunt was a mechanic who lived in New York, New York ; he developed many other inventions, including an early sewing machine, a new type of fountain pen, and a new knife sharpener.
KITE
The kite was invented roughly 2,500 to 3,000 years ago. It originated in China, Malaysia or Indonesia (there are many claims to having invented the kite). Some people say that the earliest kites consisted of a huge leaf attached to a long string (there is a type of Indonesian leaf that is wonderful as a kite).
CROSSWORD PUZZLE
The crossword puzzle, a word game, was invented by Arthur Wynne in 1913. Arthur Wynne was a journalist born in Liverpool, England. Wynne wrote weekly puzzle for the US newspaper called the New York World. The first crossword puzzle by Wynne was a diamond-shaped puzzle that was published in the Sunday New York World on December 21, 1913. The first British crossword puzzle appeared on February 1922; it wass published in Pearson's Magazine.

Dear Becky ,
Thank you for the photo of your school .It is very nice. I have the best mark in the class for my project on Civil Education.
It’s my turn to give you information about how the educational system works in Algeria.
Algerian boys and girls spend one year in Pre-school . After Pre-school, they go to a Primary School for five year. After completing the Primary School , they take an exam. If they succeed, they will go to a Middle School for four years. By the end of the fourth year , they will take an exam called «BEM». If they pass the BEM , they will go to The Lycée (also called High School).
High school students receive a high school diploma called the «Baccalaureate»
after three years .Some of them continue their studies in a university but the unlucky ones will study in a Vocational Training School or start work to earn a living.
Yours
Nakhla
Today, children spend too much time in front of television. Some of them like cartoons and episodes; others prefer action films or sport programs, but nearly every one of them dislikes the news and documentaries.
At school, teachers find a lot of difficulties with the pupils who don’t revise their lessons, don’t do their homework and often forget their books and exercise-books at home .
The parents sometimes forget or ignore their responsibilities towards their children. The only feed them and offer them clothes and shelter and forget their education.
Dear children’s parents, try to encourage your kids to watch educational programs which help them either at school or in daily life.

Do you believe in ghosts ? What would you do if you saw a ghost ? Would you talk to it ? Would you run away ?
Answer the following questions and write a paragraph of about five lines .
It was raining very hard when the bus left the school.
When we got home, my aunt Carol and uncle Arthur were
waiting for us. They told us to run into their basement. When
I looked up the road, I saw that a tornado was coming
towards our house. We all ran towards the shelter. But it was
too late. The tornado was passing over us while we were trying
to get down the stairs. We were closing the door when the wind
suddenly pulled it off. The noise was as loud as a train, and it was
very dark. My uncle was holding me down when suddenly the tornado
lifted him and threw him against a wall . Everybody was screaming for
help while the tornado was throwing things on top of us .Suddenly the wind
stopped . It became very quiet . My uncle and my sister were hurt , but we all survived .

The robot is the most amazing invention that man has ever
made. For example, in 1987 an American surgeon was able to
instruct a robot from a New York hospital to do an operation in
Strasbourg. In the same year astronauts were able to pilot another
robot to take pictures of Mars. Robots are already capable of doing
many difficult and dangerous jobs. You can see them working
in car factories, in mines, in fire departments and in nuclear plants.
Many people think that robots are stupid. This may be true for the old
generation robots. But the new generation robots are not stupid machines at all.
They can hear and speak. They can even smell. Someday soon, I’m sure
scientists will be able to invent robot cooks, which you can instruct to prepare
your breakfast in the morning. They may be able to invent robot students to do
your home work while you just lie in your bed listening to music. And who
knows? They might even invent robot mechanics, which will repair broken
robots. Can robots become the rivals of man in the future? Well they cannot for
one simple reason. They have only artificial intelligence, so it is impossible for them to be man’s rivals.

Communication technologies were very important in the development of all the great ancient societies. Today, we can communicate with other people in many different ways. We can talk and write, and we can send messages with our hands and faces. There are also the phone (including the mobiles) ; the fax, and e-mails. Televison, film, painting and photography can also communicate ideas.
Even animals have ways of exchanging information, too. Bees dance and tell other bees where to find food. Whales sing songs. Monkeys use their faces to show anger and love. But this is nothing compared to what people can do. We have languages, about 6000 languages, in fact. We can write poetry, tell jokes, make promises, explain, persuade and tell the truth, or tell lies. And we have a sense of past and furure not just the present.
PART 2 / Situation of integration: Modern technologies made our life easier and become friendly with us such as : computers, mobile phones , television and others ….
Find the advantages (+) and disadvantages(-) of these modern technologies. Where do we use them? And what can we do with them. ( write 6 to 8 lines)
Whales are lovely intelligent animals. However they become endangered species because many people hunt them Dramatically .The fishermen transform a large part of whale’s meat into cosmetic or pet’s products.
It’s important to know that whales play a vital role in the
balance of our environment and killing them would destabilize the Ecological
System.
Eventually Green Peace has strongly criticized this horrible practice.
Therefore we must protect them. Moreover the United Nations should stop
whales hunting by imposing severe sanctions against whales’ offenders.

Here is his answer: “ preparation for the test is
very important and it starts at home. Perhaps I should explain the meaning of
the term preparation. By preparation I mean the work that pupils do before the
test. But just how do you go about it? You may ask. Well, the majority of pupils
revise for exams alone. This method may possibly be suitable for some
children, but on the other hand it may well be the cause of the failure of many
others.
Topic one: Write an email to your key pal in which you tell him
About your preparation for the exams and the B .E .M exam
Do you like to revise alone or with you friends ?
When do you prefer to revise?
What do you think that visual memory is the best way to keep information?
What will be your feeling if you succeed in your all exams

Flying for a living.
Cathy Moor has made a career out of her passion. She has only had one job. She has never wanted to do anything but be in a hot air balloon, going where the wind takes her, listening to the birds, and watching deer and small animals below her. And she gets paid for it, about £ 25000 a year. “I have been flying balloons since I was 10, and I have done it professionally for twelve years. I fly between 10 and 20 passengers in different balloons” The flights usually last an hour, and they go early in the morning or just before sunset. “The trips are always mystery tours” she says. I never know where we are going to land”.
She starts work about 6 am, and works anything from 15 hours a day to nothing, if the weather is bad.”We can’t fly if it’s too windy, if visibility is poor, or if it’s raining. The balloon gets too heavy and the passengers get wet”. What’s the best thing about the job? “ The job itself. I love being out in the countryside and I hate routines. So this is heaven for me”.

George Washington was born in Virginia. His family owned a big farm and had slaves. George didn’t have much education. During his life he had three jobs. He was a farmer, a soldier and a politician. He loved the life of a farmer. He grew tobacco and owned horses. He worked hard but he also liked dancing and going to the theatre. In 1759, he married a widow called Martha Curtis. They were happy together, but didn’t have any children. George was Commander-in-Chief of the army and fought the British in the war of independence. When the war ended in 1781, he was happy to return to his farm, but his country wanted him to be president, and gave his name to the new capital city. He built the White House, but he never lived in it. By 1797, he was tired of politics. He went back to his farm and died there two years later.

Hollywood Kids.
PART 2 / Situation of integration: Every one thinks Hollywood is so glamorous, but I have news for you. It’s really dangerous growing up in Los Angeles. People have guns. Sometimes I think I am going crazy. I’m going to get out of here just as soon as I can. “Zavier, aged 18 “
The Olympic Games
The Olympic games are the biggest sport competitions in the world. they take place each four years. This important event is an occasion for thousands of young sportsmen, and sportswomen to challenge each others in a spirit of peace in order to win one of the three medals golden, silver, and bronze. The winner will be called the Olympic champion
The first Olympics took place in Olympia in 776 B.C. Only Greece participated and there was only one competition: 200 metres race. The Olympics continued like this for 1,168 years. Then they were banned by the Romans in 394 A.D
The first modern Olympics took place in 1896 in Athens, Greece. Thirteen nations participated in the games, which were organised by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a Frenchman. He wanted to encourage sports and friendship between all nations. The most important thing in the Olympic Games was not to win, but to participate. But today, it is very important to win because the winners get a lot of money.
The symbol of the Olympics is five circles. They represent the five continents. The circles are blue, yellow, black, green and red, the colours usually found on national flags. The circles join together to show the friendship between all the nations.

Nowadays, having a mobile phone has become a necessity for everyone. Mobile phone keeps you connected to your family and friends .It can also serve the purpose of various devices and gadgets. Mobile phones have many functions: they come with a camera, a radio and a calendar. You do not have to carry a separate calendar, camera, or calculator .
Mobile phones may be a great security for the parents as they can now be connected to their children every time. Parents are always concerned about their children’s safety as their children spend most of the time outside.
Children should be taught the proper time and place to use their Mobiles. Parents set limits on the amount of calls that their kids can make. Children must be taught not to use their phones during school hours .

Over the last century, there have been many significant changes in the way we live. We can compare the life of the ancient people and the life of the people of the twenty first century because so many changes have occured.
People didn’t use to travel such long distances in such short period of time. The planes were not that popular then, because they used to be a very expensive. Nowadays, we have fast and comfortable cars and more and more people also travel by plane. Moreover, in the past people worked much harder, they did not have tools which made their work easier. Today, most of the difficult and dangerous work is done by computers and machines. In the past the conditions of living did not use to be as comfortable as they are now. There were not bathrooms and running water in many houses, many people could not afford household appliances like fridge or TV set, because they used to be luxurious goods.. Another difference is that, in the past, there were not that many sources of entertainment. Therefore people used to spend more time with their friends.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was born in 571 in Mecca.his father Abdullah died before his birth and his mother Amna died while he was a child . he went to live with his grand-father , and later with his uncle.
He got married at the age of twenty-five . khadidja, a rich woman , asked him for marriage after he showed honesty on his trading missions for her .
At the age of forty , Muhammad (PBUH) received the Koran through the Archangel Gabriel in a cave in Mount Hira. At that time, most Arabs used to worship idols. Some of them in Mecca were converted to Islam and many of them refused that. They laughed at him and some even stoned him. But, Muhammad (PBUH) didn’t give up, and continued to preach patiently.
In 624, he went to AL-Medina. There, people welcomed him and listened to him with great interest. In 630, Muhammad (PBUH) returned to Mecca triumphantly and destroyed the idols round the ka’ba. Since then, Islam has spread fast all over the world. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) died 634.

Elephants have lived on this planet for five million years. Scientists have found their bones in many places, from Asia to North of America. Till now, elephants have lived in different kinds of environments, including quite dry areas in Niger, grasslands in East Africa and forests in West Africa.
African elephants are in danger of extinction. Hunters have already killed hundreds of thousands of elephants for the ivory, so several countries have protected elephants in national parks.

We all need food and we can’t live without it because it gives us energy and keeps us fine and strong. But ,where does our food come from?
There are two basic kinds of food . One comes from animals and the other from plants .
Meat comes from animals. We get mutton from sheep, beef from cows and chicken from hens. Fish is meat ,too. We also get other products from animals such as : eggs from hens and ducks, honey from bees, milk from cows, and from milk people get butter and cheese.
From plants, we get fruit, vegetables and cereals. A lot of fruit grow on trees such as :oranges. Some kinds of vegetables grow under the ground ; the potato is an example. Cereals give us food, too. Millions of people in the world eat rice and make flour or semolina from wheat.
But, you must buy good food for a healthy life. Do you eat the right food ?

Dear John,
How are you? Sorry! I haven’t written for so long but, now that my exams are over, I have decided to write you a letter. I have got a problem and I want you to help me.
My best friend, Steve, did something that has upset me very much. Last week, during our Math exam, he copied off me. Can you believe it? He cheated! But that’s not the worst part of it. When h realized what he was doing, I turned around to tell him to stop and the teacher saw me. She thought that I was cheating. And guess what ? Steve didn’t say a word.
I ended up losing marks in my test while Steve got 72 %. If you were me, what would you do? Should I explain to my teacher exactly what happened? If I tell her, I will be giving my best friend away. I really don’t want to ruin our friendship, but then again; it’s not fair. I’m in a dilemma.
I hope I haven’t troubled you too much. Let me know what you think a soon as possible.

According to recent surveys done by widely read newspapers, many changes may appear in people’s lives and on their planet.
Since the weather will be hotter, people might not need to buy warmer clothes, they may not drive cars and water might be insufficient and precious. Pollution will be responsible.
Houses might not be as big as they are now. Many people will live in cities where you may not see large quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables in the markets. Most people would rely heavily on fast and canned food. Illegal hunting of animals will make meat very rare.

If you visit an American city
You’ll find it very pretty
Just two things of which you must beware
Don’t drink the water and don’t breathe the air
Pollution, pollution
They got smog and sewage and mud
Turn on your tap and get hot and cold running crud
Just go out for a breath of air
And you’ll be ready medicare
The city streets are really quite a thrill
If the hoods don’t get you, the monoxide will
Pollution, pollution
Wear a gas mask and a veil
Then you can breathe, as long as you don’t inhale
Lots of things there you can drink
But stay away from the kitchen sink
Throw out folks downstream will drink it for lunch
That the folks downstream will drink it for lunch
So go to the city, see the crazy people there
Like lambs to the water

Bill and Simone Butler left Miami one summer weekend in their boat. They wanted to sail round the Caribbean Sea for two weeks.
During their holiday, they saw a large group of whales. Bill and Simone were very excited. Unfortunately, while they were watching them, the whales began to hit the side of the boat. Suddenly water started getting in and they realized that they were in trouble. They quickly jumped into the lifeboat while the boat was sinking, and watched it disappear under the sea.
Fortunately, they had enough food and water for twenty days. They also had a fishing line and a machine which made salt water into drinking water. These helped them to survive during their terrible experience. For the next fifty days when there was no food left, they caught ten fish a day and ate them raw.
The Butlers saw about twenty ships, but although they waved and shouted while they were passing, nobody saw them. They were becoming weaker and weaker. Then, just as they were beginning to lose hope, a fishing boat rescued them. Their disastrous holiday was over.

Fast food
Everyday, one in three children (from 4to19) eats fast food. As a result, children gain extra pounds daily. Child’s obesity from fast food is not the major cause, but it is becoming the most frightening problem because fast food products contains higher fats, carbohydrates sugars and calories than any other products. Young children love eating junk food like pizza, popcorn, burgers and French fries. Although such food is tasty, it is not very healthy.
However, you can make a meal at the fast food restaurant healthier by choosing a burger which has lots of vegetables in it, by skipping the fries and by having plain water instead of carbonated soft drinks.

Hi,
I went to Rome last August with my friend Peter. We flew to Rome with British Airways.
We stayed for a week in a small hotel near the Colosseum. The hotel was nice and quite cheap.
During the day we walked around the city. We saw all the famous places like Colosseum and St Peter's, and we threw a coin in the Trevi Fountain. We took a lot of photos. At night we went to restaurants and had fantastic pasta.
Our favourite restaurant was in the Piazza Navona. We bought a painting of Trastevere( the old town) and Peter bought some presents for his family.
We had a great time. Rome is full of history and has a special atmosphere, and Italian food is wonderful. We only had two problems: it was very hot, and it was very difficult to cross the road.
What about you? Did you go somewhere?
Hope to hear from you very soon,
Steve

We all know that more and more animals are placed on the endangered species list every year. Obviously, we’re not doing enough to protect them. So don’t you think it’s about time we became more serious about protecting wildlife?
Let’s begin with what we shouldn’t do. We shouldn’t destroy or pollute the natural habitats of animals. They need their natural habitat to survive. Instead of cutting down forests, we should plant new ones and try to reduce pollution as much as possible.
In some parts of the world there are places where both animals and their habitats are protected. These places are called National Parks. Here hunting is banned and the public is usually not allowed to enter. However, not enough National Parks exist.
Of course, there are laws which protect endangered species. In fact, in a number of countries it is illegal to kill or capture animals that are considered rare or threatened. However, in some places, hunters continue to hunt, even thought this is against the law. Therefore, stricter laws need to be made. To sum up, there are various ways in which endangered species can be protected. What a difference it would make if all of us co-operated to protect wildlife.

Dear Readers,
I’m writing to seek your kind advice. I can’t make up my mind. During four years, I have been studying hard to succeed and now that I have the opportunity to go to the high school, I feel stuck. I don’t know what to choose.
To begin with, let me know you the facts. I am a student in the fourth level of middle school. I will take my “brevet” exam next June and I know I will pass it with a merit. The problem is that I don’t know yet which stream I’ll register in. My parents want me to register in the scientific stream. In contrast, I would like to go to literary stream.
Indeed, if I registered in the stream of my choice, I would realize my dream which consists of becoming a translator. I would work hard to get a literary “baccalaureat” which would allow me to register at the department of translation at university.
However, if I followed my choice, my parents would be disappointed. They want me to become a doctor. They may be upset on me and I wouldn’t like that.
To sum up, I am standing at a crossroads in my educational career. I don’t know whether I must listen to my parents or to myself. What would you do if you were me? Please help me with your advice. I am lost.
Sincerely
Lost pupil

Our grandparents didn't use to have an easy life because many things weren't invented yet. They used to go to the forest to bring wood to cook their meals or heat. They used to travel on animals’ back or on foot all day long to visit a relative who is ill. They also used to raise animals for clothing, too. But thanks to many inventions, work has become easier and takes less time to be accomplished. For example, it is the invention of the cooker which works with gas or electricity that makes meals be ready very quickly. Or the invention of the plane, the car and the motorways that allows people travel and arrive to destination in a very short time. They also buy their clothes readymade. What to say about the computer and the internet? These great inventions help you search for any information you need. The telephone or the mobile also enable you to approach any person wherever he is in the world.

I’m writing to inform you about the plans for next Friday’s excursion. The departure point will be our school. If every body is punctual , we’ll leave at 7:30 . The weather forecast announces a day with showers on Fridays. Don’t worry , I have made contingency plan just in case it rains while we are on excursion . Thus if it rains in the morning , we won’t go to the zoo. We’ll visit the Martyr’s Museum . It will help a lot in revising our history lessons. We’ll have lunch at 12:30 . If it rains we won’t have lunch out , we‘ll get back into the coach and have our sandwiches inside.

A more modern threat to many animals is the destruction of their environment and the changes in the ecology of whole areas. Our use of pesticides and other chemicals have polluted both soil and water, and this pollution has proved to be toxic to many of the plants which are part of the shelters of many animals. Furthermore, we regulary throw waste to land previously inhabited by animals, in order to make way for expanding populations, or as in the case of deforestation to provide goods for rich nations.
Modern living has had a harmful effect on the ecosystem. We must reverse this to save our wildlife.

Hi!
Here's the information you've asked me about. I've chosen the three British festivities I like
best.
Winter is a time for parties in Britain. The first big party of the year is Halloween, on the 31
st of October. It's traditionally the night of Black Magic, when all sorts of horrible, dark, dangerous
things appear. So. people have parties in dark rooms, wear horrible clothes and masks, and try to
make you afraid.
Five days after Halloween, on the 5th of November is Guy Fawkes 'Night. Another party but
a very different one. Guy Fawkes parties happen outside at night . People have fireworks,
barbecues , and big fires.
Children often make a man out of old clothes and put him on the top of the fire. This
tradition began after the 5th of November 1605, when Guy Fawkes tried to start a fire in Houses of
Parliament in London.
On the 25th of December, people celebrate Christmas. On Christmas Day families get
together, exchange presents and eat traditional meal. Children love Christmas because they get a lot
of presents.
I hope this will help you to write your report on some British festivities.

If I pass my Baccalaureate, I’ll go to university. I will train to become a translator. If I get my diploma, I’ll travel all around the world to see other people and make friends.
However, I know that life is full of surprises. So if I fail, I’ll go to a vocational school. I’ll train to be a computer technician. If I manage to get my diploma, I’ll open a cyber café and work on my own. Of course if I make a lot of money, I’ll build a house. I’ll get married and start a family.
Yours,
Karim

Last summer holidays my friend and I flew to Rome. We rented a room in a nice hotel. We always go to restaurants to take meals. Italian restaurants are famous for their tasty dishes. Pizza is the most eaten in Italy. Food prices are cheap.
Rome has a Mediterranean climate. It is sometimes unpleasantly hot in the summer. There are many fantastic places to visit in Rome such as : The Colosseum which is the largest monument, it is a huge amphitheater.
Spring is a busy time in Rome, not only because of the fantastic weather but because of the Lenten season. Thousands of Christians flock to Rome during Lent and Easter to visit its churches and museums

A STRANGE EXPERIENCE
Last month I was on holiday in Spain with my mum
and dad. One day, we were driving through a small village.
It was time for lunch, so we stopped at a restaurant .
It was a large , old building. We looked through the
window. There were lots of people in the restaurant.
They were eating , drinking and chatting . A musician
was playing the violin. But there was something strange about the people . They weren't wearing normal , modern clothes. They were wearing hats, jackets and dresses from another century . We couldn't understand it. But we were hungry , so we opened the door .
When we went into the restaurant, everything was different. The people were wearing normal clothes. The musician wasn't there- the music was on CD. It was a very strange experience !

Comprehensive Schools in Britain.

When we were in Dallas (Texas) some years ago, I went to JR Ewing Primary School. It wasn’t far from where we lived so; I liked to go there on foot with other children. But when it rained, my mom drove me there in her small Chevrolet car. I had lunch in the canteen; we often had pasta with chicken or fish and yoghurt for dessert. I was crazy about Math, Sports and English. But I hated History because Miss Green, our teacher punished us severely when we didn’t learn all those dates. I was afraid of her. After school, I came home rapidly to play with my dog Rex. It was fantastic !

Food Waste.
We throw away one third (1/3) of all bread , fruit and vegetables we buy which makes our streets and cities dirty from garbage. We can all take a simple step to reduce this waste. Here are my tips to help you reduce food waste and keep our environment clean:
‐Plan the meals that your family enjoys most and make a menu plan for the week. Write the ingredients you need fro each meal on a list. Use up your leftovers.
‐ Write a list from your menu and take it with you to the shop. Don’t shop when you are hungry , because you will focus on your hunger and not making good choices.
‐ Rotate food in your cupboard and fridge when you get home from shopping, put all the new food at the back of the fridge and cupboard .Bring the last week’s old items to the front.
‐Take a look at what you throw away and be honest with yourself, do you throw half a loaf of bread? then why not freeze it and take out slices as you need them. Don’t throw away vegetables that you can cook. This will help you reduce the amount you buy each week .
‐ Do not throw garbage at any moment, put it in the garbage can using well‐closed plastic bags, before garbage trucks pass. This will keep our streets and cities clean from food waste pollution .

TRAFFIC
Clearing the Roads
The streets of London are moving again. Last week the traffic-clogged metropolis began demanding a £5 ($8 dollar) charge from all motorists that enter the busiest areas of the city. The result: 25% less traffic.
The plan to reduce traffic uses 700 cameras. Any driver who enters the zone – an area of about eight square miles (13 square kilometers) – between 7:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. has until 10:00 p.m. that same day to pay the charge. (You can pay by telephone, over the Internet or in certain shops. Season passes are also available.) The cameras check the registration plate of every car against the payment record, and failure to pay the cash gets the driver an £80 fine. The extra money from the charges and the fines, estimated at up to £150 million a year will be used to improve public transport.
The idea is catching on. In Britain, at least 30 other cities are thinking about using the same tactic. Similar operations are already being used in Singapore and Norway. But although everything went well last week, there are still questions. Will the decrease in traffic hurt local businesses? Will traffic jams start outside the zone? For now, the only thing that’s certain is that the 15,000 plus Londoners who have already been fined will be – unhappily – on public transportation on Monday morning.

Army sent to stop killer elephants in Malawi
BLANTYRE, Malawi (Reuters) -- Malawi's army has been sent to round up a herd of elephants that have killed at least three people since they escaped from a game reserve earlier this week, police said.
Their mission: to drive 150 of the animals back into the Kasungu National Park on the Zambian border before they do more damage. One group of 50 pachyderms has already returned.
"School pupils are being escorted by armed game rangers to and from school every day," Kasungu District Commissioner Christopher Makileni told Reuters by telephone on Thursday. Makileni said some of the metal parts of the park’s electric fence were stolen by local people and this let the elephants to break free. He said the elephants had injured people, two of them seriously. Crops and homes were also damaged.
The world's largest land mammal lives with rapidly growing human populations in rural Africa. Only a few countries still have free-roaming herds that are not confined to fenced-off game parks.
At least 10 people were killed earlier this year after a pride of lions broke free from the same Malawi game park.

Corruption in Kenya
Kenyans pay an average of 16 bribes a month to dishonest government representatives
A recent study showed that corruption makes life more expensive and more difficult for Kenyans living in cities. The study, conducted by Transparency International, found a society in which bribery is a way of life. It estimated that Kenyan city dwellers pay an average of sixteen bribes a months, making their total cost of living 31% higher than it would be in a bribe-free society.
Police officers were found to demand bribes more frequently than any other Kenyan institution, accounting for 40% of the total. Employees of the Ministry of Public Words, the Ministry of Lands and the Nairobi City Council were also found to be highly corrupt. The most bribe-free institutions was considered to be the Central Bank of Kenya, followed by the Kenya Wildlife Service.

World's Oldest Man Dies at 114
TOKYO, Japan -- Yukichi Chuganji, a retired silkworm breeder documented as the world's oldest man, has died at his home in Japan at age 114.
Chuganji was pronounced dead from natural causes on September 28 in the evening, his 65-year old nephew, Tadao Haji, said on Monday. Bedridden in recent years, Chuganji had been living with his 72-year-old daughter Kyoko in the city of Ogori, about 890 kilometers (550 miles) southwest of Tokyo.
"As always, he had been thanking everyone for taking such good care of him and for cooking his meals," Haji said of Chuganji's last day.
Chuganji was born March 23, 1889 in the farming town of Chikushino on Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu. He worked as in the silk-production industry after graduating from technical school in the early 1900s.
He liked to eat beef and pork with his meals of rice and soup. He would drink milk everyday but didn't consume alcohol.
Kyushu is also home to the world's oldest person, a 116-year-old woman named Kamato Hongo.
There are about 15,000 Japanese over the age of 100. Women are about 80 percent of the total. Japan's life expectancy is the longest in the world for both sexes -- 85.23 years for women and 78.32 for men in 2002. The country's traditional fish-based, low fat diet may be the secret to the long lives, scientists say.

Study Finds Dogs Understand Language
Rico, a dog with a "vocabulary" of nearly 200 words, can learn the names of unfamiliar toys after seeing the new toy just once.
Dog owners know it’s true– our four-footed friends listen. Now, for people who didn’t know, scientists have shown that dogs understand much of what they hear. German scientists have found that a ten-year-old dog named Rico understands more than 200 words and that he can learn new words as quickly as many children. The scientists found that Rico knows the names of dozens of toys. He can find the one his owner asks him to bring. The scientists say Rico knows as many words as monkeys, dolphins and parrots that have been trained to communicate with humans.
Rico even works to understand the meaning of a new word. The scientists put some of Rico’s toys in a room – and one new toy. Rico’s owner asked him to bring a toy, using a new name for the new toy. Rico was able to find the new toy seven times in ten. The dog seemed to understand that because he knew the names of his old toys, the new toy was the one that had a new name.
After a month, he still remembered the name of that new toy three times out of six, even if he hadn’t seen it since the first test. Scientists say that Rico’s ability to learn new words is about the same as a 3-year-old. Rico's ability to learn shows that it is possible to understand without speaking. "You don't have to be able to talk to understand a lot," Fischer said.
Scientist Paul Bloom, at Yale University isn’t sure about dogs’ ability to understand. "Children can understand words used in different ways and in different places. Rico only brings toys,” Bloom wrote in Science Magazine. Bloom wants to see more information. Can Rico learn a new word if it isn’t connected with playing? Can he understand instructions not to bring a toy? The scientists are still working with Rico to see if he can understand requests to put toys in boxes or to bring them to certain people.

Japan Invents a Square Watermelon
Melons cost US $82 each in Japanese department stores
Farmers in the southern Japanese town of Zentsuji have figured out how to grow their watermelons so they’re square.
The technique has practical use. "The reason they're doing this in Japan is because of lack of space," said Samantha Winters of the National Watermelon Promotion Board in Orlando, Florida. A fat, round watermelon can take up a lot of space in a refrigerator.
But clever Japanese farmers have solved this problem by making their watermelons grow into a square shape. Farmers put the melons into a square glass box while the fruit is growing. As the watermelon grows, it grows into the shape of the box. The idea of square watermelons was invented 20 years ago, by a farmer on the island of Shikoku, in the southwest of Japan. Today the watermelons are famous.
The square boxes are the size of Japanese refrigerator shelves. But the square fruit is expensive - each square watermelon costs 10,000 yen, about US$82. Regular watermelons in Japan cost from $15 to $25 each.
About 400 square watermelons were sent to Tokyo and Osaka, Japan's two largest cities. The new square watermelons are on sale in department stores and more expensive supermarkets. They are mostly for rich buyers. "I can't buy it, it is too expensive," said a woman shopping at a department store in the southern city of Takamatsu.

Strange Wedding
The Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malachenko married his bride Ekaterina Dmitrieva – from the International Space Station, about 550 kilometers above the earth.
Dmitrieva was at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Malachenko took part via video. There was no time to have the wedding before he went into space for six months to work on the International Space Station, and the couple decided not to wait until he returned.
The law in the state of Texas law allows one – or even both – of a couple to be absent from the ceremony as long as the proper documents are prepared. Most proxy marriages happen when one of the couple is in the military or in prison.
"When I first heard about this I thought she was crazy," said the bride's father, Victor Dmitriev, who teaches Russia literature and culture at Oklahoma State University. "I said, No! No! No!”
Malenchenko's superiors at the Russian space agency were not happy about the wedding. As a colonel in the Russian Air Force, he was supposed to have permission before marrying an American (Dmitrieva was born in Russia, but moved to the United States when she was 3 and is now a U.S. citizen). Russian officials were also unhappy because the wedding was not part of the official plan of the space station.
Cosmonauts are not encouraged to do things that aren't on the official plan. In the end, Dmitrieva said, Russian officials allowed the marriage, but said it won't be official in Russia.

Are You Lucky?
Are we born lucky? Scientists are trying to find out if your birthday determines how successful you are.
This week, Professor Richard Wiseman, at the Edinburgh Science Festival will begin an Internet study that asks people to write their answers to questions about lucky behavior. He hopes the answers will show how people's personalities are connected to the month in which they are born.
People who take the Internet test will be asked to give their birth date, then agree or disagree with 12 sentences. Here are a few example questions from the survey:
• I am a lucky person; lucky things happen to me.
• I don’t worry about life.
• I like to have new experiences, like trying new food and drinks.
• I think good things will happen to me in the future.
• I think most of the people I meet will be pleasant, friendly and helpful.
• I try to learn from the mistakes I have made in the past.
• I sometimes talk with strangers when I’m waiting in line at the supermarket bank.
Professor Wiseman told BBC News the answers would help find if more extroverted and positive people were born in certain months. Professor Wiseman said: "There is a biological theory which suggests it is be healthier to be born in a hotter month.” "Another theory is connected to the mother’s diet – because mothers eat different foods in summer and winter. "There is also a social theory, which says that children born in certain months might do better in school because they are the oldest in their group."
Professor Wiseman's study will also examine if people born on the 13th of the month are unluckier than people born on other days.

Call a Dolphin on your Mobile Phone
DUBLIN, Ireland (Reuters) -- Mobile phone users worldwide will soon be able to dial-a-dolphin.
Scientists at a dolphin sanctuary off the west coast of Ireland are working with the British mobile telephone company Vodaphone to transmit the sounds of bottlenose dolphins communicating.
"You could call up and listen to dolphins while sitting in a traffic jam in Dublin," said marine biologist Simon Berrow, of the Shannon Dolphin and Wildlife Foundation, based in Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland.
Listening to dolphins can help reduce stress. But, it can also help the scientist who study dolphins; they can check to be sure that the dolphins are near before they go out to watch in boats. This means scientists can learn more about the dolphin’s lives.
The aim is to put underwater microphones in the ocean near Shannon, the only place in Ireland where dolphins live all year round. One difficulty faced by the project is that dolphins use a wide frequency band when they communicate. This means that humans can only hear a small part of dolphin communication.

School Gives Students own Laptop Computers
FREEPORT, Maine (AP) -- The end of the school year is near and children are playing baseball outside. But the students in Shawn Favreau's classroom are focused on their laptop computers.
For their final social studies project, they're using the computers to create presentations on ancient Greece. Some of the students can’t imagine going back to using just pencils and paper.
"We still do the same things. We just do it differently. The teachers are experimenting with it. They're looking for ways to make it more interesting," said student Kaitlyn Beaule. "I think it's a lot more fun."
Maine's laptop program covers all 241 public middle schools and has been very popular. The program began last fall with 17,000 seventh-graders and 3,000 teachers using the laptops. Next fall the program will include eighth-graders for a total of about 33,000 laptops in use.
In Favreau's class, the students use the computers for research, reports and e-mail. They don’t write reports by hand now; assignments will ask for students to make movies or Power Point presentations on their computers. In Alex Briasco-Brin's math class, students used laptops for a project building model rockets. One teacher used the laptops to communicate with a submarine off the coast of Africa.
The laptops aren't used all the time. On a command of "lids down," the students close the computers and pick up textbooks or listen to lectures.
A report showed students were more interested in classes and that there were fewer absences since school starting being used. Teachers are also excited about the program.

Cats have been pets for thousands of years. Scientists think that domestic cats come from a type of African wildcat that was domesticated by the Egyptians 4,500 years ago. Egyptians valued cats because they ate mice and rats. Cats were sometimes mummified and buried with their owners or in special cat cemeteries. About 800 years ago, European soldiers brought cats back to Europe.
Cats can see well at night, but their daytime vision is not as good as that of people. Cats have excellent hearing and can turn their ears to focus on different sounds. Their sense of smell is also very good, and this helps them find food. Cats have sharp teeth for biting and a rough tongue that is used for eating and for cleaning themselves.
Female cats can have kittens from the age of nine or ten months of age. The mother cat is pregnant for about 65 days. The average number of kittens in each litter is four. Cats can live to be 15 years old.
There are about 40 varieties, or breeds, of domestic cats. The smallest breed of cats weighs 2 to 3 kilos, while the largest weighs 7 to 9 kilos. Different varieties are different colors and may have different fur. Manx cats don’t have a tail and Sphynx cats don’t have fur. In Turkey there is a variety of cat that has one blue eye and one brown eye.

The Brain
The human brain is pinkish gray on the outside and weighs about 1.5 kilos. It is responsible for controlling all of functions of the body, from speaking, to breathing to sleeping. The brain uses 20% of the body’s blood supply to complete all its functions.
The brain is divided into two halves that have different functions. The left hemisphere controls the right side of the body, use of numbers, written and spoken language, logic, and scientific skills. The right hemisphere controls the left side of the body, intuition, art and imagination and musical skills. In most right-handed people and many left-handed people, the left hemisphere is stronger than the right hemisphere.
Different parts of the brain have different functions. Broca’s area, which is above the left ear, controls speech, the occipital lobe, at the back of the brain, controls vision. Feelings and memory are controlled by the frontal lobe, at the front of the brain. Movement is controlled by the area at the top of the brain. If these parts of the brain are damaged in an adult, the person may lose the ability to speak, see, feel or move. However, children’s brains are often able to move the function to a different area.

The Solar System
Our solar system consists of the sun, the nine planets and the asteroids, comets and meteoroids that are associated with the planets. Astronomers believe that our planetary system was created more than 4.7 billion years ago. Astronomers thought that our solar system was the only planetary system in the universe, but, in 1999 astronomers discovered another planetary system near a star called Upsilon Andromidae. Now astromers think that there are many planetary systems in the universe.
The nine planets that make up our solar system are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Mercury is closest to the sun. It is hot and dry. Next comes the planet Venus. Venus is one of the brightest things in the sky after the sun and the moon. Venus is also the hottest planet in the solar system, with a temperature of 462 degrees Celsius. Then is the planet Earth. After earth is Mars, which is also called the Red Planet. Mars is very dry now, but some scientists believe that it used to have water.
Jupiter is the largest planet, more than 1,400 times bigger than earth. Its bright color comes from clouds. Jupiter has sixteen moons. Saturn is the second largest planet and has wide rings. The planet Uranus is a bright blue color. The blue-green color of Uranus comes from the gas in its cold, clear atmosphere. On this planet, night and day each last 42 years. After Uranus is Neptune, which rotates around the sun once every 164 years. Pluto is the farthest planet from the Sun, more 5850 million kilometers away. It is a small rocky planet with one moon.
