• Purpose/Overview of Process

To solicit advisor’s input which is critical to ensure the program is teaching skills and using industry related equipment/technology for entry-level employment opportunities. It is critical that we hear from our advisors and record their recommendations.

• Approval of Prior Minutes and Advisory Progress Report

• Labor Market Information

Question A: Does the information that was reviewed reflect what is happening in your occupation?

Answer: Generally, yes, however great variation exists between shops due to new California law that requires techs that use own tools to earn double minimum wage. Some shops comply, others find ways around this new regulation, which contributes to the diversity in wages.

Question B: What are some industry trends that you are observing within the profession?

Answer: Multi-point inspections, and driveway alignment, tire pressure, tread checks.

Question A: What are the qualities you are seeing in employees that you are hiring?

Recommendation/Findings: Need problem solving skills, read and follow flow charts.

Fundamental Skills needed: Reading, writing, math, and communication skills.

• Equipment/Software

Question A: What equipment, supplies or software are emerging in the industry and how does this change workforce requirements?

Recommendation/Findings: Hunter Quick-Check Alignment Equipment, Interactive-Troubleshooting software. Industry compatible scan tools. Hybrid cooling system service equipment.

• Certifications/Licensure

Question A: Are there certifications that students can have that give them a competitive edge? Are there additional training requirements that we should be aware of?

Recommendation/Findings: Student ASE and other certifications (for example; AC Delco Online Training, Soft-Skills Training. Students should be certified lift operators (ALI’s Lift Operator Training Pack is what the dealers use). Anything that shows the student has a serious interest in the occupation. Students should be trained in servicing the hybrid vehicle’s cooling system.

Question A: What new procedures, protocols or techniques are being implemented in the hiring practices for the automotive occupation?

Recommendation/Findings: Building a well-constructed resume is critical.

Questions B: Supplies - What basic supplies are necessary that an instructor needs to start an Automotive Technology Program? What additional supplies (beyond basic) would you also recommend?

Recommendation/Findings: Go by 2013 NATEF Tool and Equipment Standards.

Question C: What are the technological changes emerging in the industry that the instructor should be aware of, and if so, how will this change the work force requirements for employment

Recommendation/Findings: R1234YF is the new standard for auto air-conditioning. Hybrid vehicles and Electric vehicles are becoming more common. Some training in safety and service should be included in the curriculum.

• Course Review

A. Recommendations For Additions

Question A: What specific industry curriculum or training recommendation do you have for our current curriculum? (Are there topics or training you would recommend adding, strengthening, or revising?)

Recommendation/Findings: R1234YF is the new standard for auto air-conditioning. Hybrid safety and service should be included. Specialized low-cost equipment is being used to service hybrid-vehicle cooling systems.

• Review/Approval of Course Summary and Relevancy of Course Objectives. Advisors review the course outline(s) of record for the courses shown below for appropriateness of the type of instruction (such as lecture, laboratory, work-based instruction, and mode of delivery) offered within the program to assure that students gain competency with specific skills and hours required for successful completion of the program. Also, advisors evaluate the objectives of the course outlines of record to determine their relevancy and alignment with current industry requirements.

Motion: Approve that the course outline(s) of record presented for the courses shown above, with the exception of the attached recommendations and revisions that are appropriate for the type of instruction (such as lecture, laboratory, work based instruction, and mode of delivery) offered within the program to assure that students gain competency with specific skills and hours required for successful completion of the program.

Recommendation/Findings:

1. MLR Course Level I – Add Automotive Lift Certification (under 4-D)

2. MLR Course Level II – Okay as-is

3. MLR Course Level III - Okay as-is

4. AST Course Level I – Add Automotive Lift Certification (under 8)

5. AST Course Level II – Recommend removing sections 9, 10, and 11

6. AST Course Level III - Okay as-is
