Duxbury Before and After Dark Driver Education Program
Tuition: $600.00 Includes classroom component, driving time, and parent class.
CLASSROOM COMPONENT:
30 hours of classroom instruction completed in fifteen evening classes (2 hours each) or
30 hours of classroom instruction in five day format (six hours of instruction each day)
• Students must arrive on time to class and must stay for the entire class.
• Students must complete assignments, have an 80% average on the six tests given throughout the class, and pass the final exam with an 80% or better score.
• Students must make up any missed hours of classroom instruction in the next session. Driver Education is offered three times a year, in the Fall (evening classes), February vacation week (Tuesday – Saturday), and in a 5 day session after the school year ends.
• Students participating in the Driver Education program are subject to school rules and regulations regarding student behavior as outlined in the DHS Student Handbook. Students with disruptive behavior or posing discipline issues during class will be dismissed from class and will need to make up any time missed.
DRIVING COMPONENT:
• 18 hour driving component; 12 hours of in car, behind the wheel training, and 6 hours of
in-car experience observing other student drivers.
• Student must inform Driver Education Coordinator when he/she has obtained Learners
Permit and provide a copy of the permit to the coordinator. The coordinator/driving instructor will schedule driving hours directly with the student. Most driving/observation time takes place after school or on the weekend in 2 hour increments.
• If the instructor and/or parent of student feels that more driving time would be beneficial
to the student, extra driving time can be arranged at a rate of $35 per hour.
PARENT CLASS:
At least one parent/guardian of the student must attend a 2 hour driver education class regarding the MA junior operating laws. This requirement is waived if the parent has attended a Duxbury Before and After Dark Driver Education Parent Class for another child within the family during the past five years or can provide a Parent Class completion certificate from another Driver Education program, obtained within the previous five years, for another child within the family.
PROGRAM COMPLETION:
Once the student has completed 30 hours of classroom instruction, handed in all assignments, passed the final exam, completed all driving and observation hours, and a parent has attended the parent class, a $15 check made payable to MASS DOT must be submitted to the Driver Education Coordinator. The coordinator will submit all student materials to the RMV for processing, which takes approximately three to five days. SCHEDULING A ROAD TEST
After the completion certificate has been issued, the student can schedule a road test on the RMV website or contact the RMV Telephone Center directly to book a road test. Road Test Scheduling information:

LICENSE ROAD TEST USE OF DRIVER EDUCATION VEHICLE/INSTRUCTOR
If a student would like to use the Driver Education vehicle for an RMV road test, the two – three hour rental fee (includes fee for Drivers Education instructor, practice drive before road test, and use of the Duxbury Before and After Dark Driver Education vehicle to and from the Registry) is as follows:
Plymouth Registry: $75
Braintree/Taunton/Brockton Registry: $110
These are the only RMV locations that can be booked for the Duxbury Before and After Dark Driver Education vehicle/instructor. Students must contact the driving instructor as soon as possible after scheduling road test to check availability of the vehicle/instructor.
