KYTC District 6 Road Report

Update of the Revive the Drive – NKY Interstate Projects and all current construction projects in the Northern Kentucky district

COVINGTON, Ky. (June 1, 2012) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 would like the public to be aware of the following conditions and/or operations that are being reported for highways in District Six. Changes and/or additions from last report are underlined/red. Motorists should be aware of possible delays or lane closures on the following projects:

REVIVE THE DRIVE – NKY PROJECTS

I-471 NB FROM THE US 27 TO THE DANIEL CARTER BEARD BRIDGE/OHIO RIVER IN CAMPBELL COUNTY - REVIVE THE DRIVE – NKY

• The I-471 NB exit ramp (Exit 1B) to I-275 WB is currently closed to all traffic during the reconstruction of the I-471 pavement in that area. Traffic is being detoured to continue on I-471 NB to US 27 (Exit 2) and back onto I-471 SB to I-275 WB. Other suggested alternate routes are: KY 9 (AA Highway) to I-275 WB. This ramp is scheduled to open by 12:00 AM on Saturday, June 2nd.

• The I-471 NB exit ramp to KY 8 (Exit 5) is currently closed to all traffic for reconstruction. Traffic is being detoured via Exit 4 to west on KY 1120 (Memorial Parkway) to north on US 27 (Monmouth St.) to KY 8. This ramp is scheduled to open at 6:00 AM on Monday, June 18th.

• The KY 8 entrance ramp to I-471 NB is currently closed to all traffic for reconstruction. The detour is I-471 SB to Exit 4, (KY 1120; Memorial Parkway) and back onto I-471 NB. The ramp is scheduled to open at 6:00 AM on Monday, June 18th.

• Beginning at 8:00 PM on Friday, June 1st, through 12:00 PM on Sunday, June 3rd, I-471 NB will be restricted to one lane from US 27 in Highland Heights to just north of the Memorial Parkway interchange while crews relocate barrier wall in this area. Upon completion of this operation, traffic will be maintained in two lanes from US 27 in Highland Heights to the Ohio State line in a new traffic pattern.

• Beginning at 8:00 PM on Friday, June 8th through 6:00 AM on Monday, June 18th, the I-471 NB exit ramp (Exit 1A) to I-275 EB will be closed for pavement reconstruction in that area. Traffic will be detoured to continue on I-471 NB to Exit 2 at US 27 and then back on I-471 SB to I-275.

• Beginning at 8:00 PM on Friday, June 8th through 6:00 AM on Monday, June 25th, the US 27 entrance ramp to I-471 NB (2 mile-marker at Southgate) will be closed.  Traffic will be detoured to continue north on US 27 to east on KY 1892 (Carothers Rd.) to I-471 NB. Traffic on I-471 NB is currently restricted to two lanes and is in a shifted position with both shoulders closed and will remain so until further notice. 

• Traffic is restricted to one through lane from US 27 onto I-471 NB from just south of the intersection at US 27 in Highland Heights. Traffic must merge into one lane prior to entering onto I-471 NB.

• Throughout the duration of this project, traffic may be reduced to a single lane during night time periods between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM.

• Expect Delays!

• Use caution when entering the work zone and watch for slowed traffic.  Watch for trucks entering and leaving the roadway. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph through the construction zone, and will be enforced.

I-275 WB FROM THE COMBS HEHL BRIDGE/OHIO RIVER TO KY 9 (AA HIGHWAY) IN CAMPBELL COUNTY REVIVE THE DRIVE – NKY

                                       

• From 8:00 PM till midnight on Friday, June 8th, I-275 WB will be reduced to one lane from the I-471 interchange to just east of exit 77 (KY 9) while crews relocate temporary barrier wall in that area.

• Beginning at 8:00 PM on Friday, June 8th through 6:00 AM on Monday, June 25th, the Three-Mile Road entrance ramp to I-275 WB will be closed. Traffic will need to access I-275 WB from I-471 NB or by continuing west on Three-Mile Road to north on KY 2345 to south on KY 9 to I-275 WB.

• Until further notice, traffic in the westbound direction is reduced to two lanes with both shoulders closed, and is in a shifted position.

• Throughout the duration of this project, traffic may be reduced to a single lane during night time periods between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM. 

• Use caution when entering the work zone and watch for slowed traffic.  Watch for trucks entering and leaving the roadway. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph through the construction zone, and will be enforced.

• Expect delays!

I-275 WB (MP 77 to MP 82.4) IN KENTON COUNTY REVIVE THE DRIVE – NKY Interstate Bridges Painting Project 

• I-275 and I-75 Interchange - Traffic may encounter lane closures nightly on I-75 and I-275 as crews continue with painting operations on the bridges at this interchange.  The roadway (both I-75 and I-275) may be reduced to two lanes of traffic between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM, and then to one lane of traffic from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning. These closures may occur on both NB and SB I-75 between Exit 184 (Donaldson Rd.) and Exit 186 (Buttermilk Pike), and on both EB and WB I-275 between Exit 2 (Mineola Pike) and Exit 83 (Dixie Highway). Traffic should use caution when traveling through these restrictions and watch for slowed traffic. 

• I-275 WB (MP 83 to MP 84) -   The left lane on I-275 WB between mile point 82 and mile point 84 is closed until further notice.

• On KY 17 at I-275 – Please use caution in this area as workers are present and watch for construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway. Short term nightly lane closures are possible.

I-75 NORTHBOUND ASPHALT RESURFACING IN BOONE COUNTY REVIVE THE DRIVE – NKY

• Resurfacing work on northbound I-75 between Exit 175 at the Richwood Road (KY 338) Interchange to just south of Exit 184 at the Donaldson Road (KY 236) Interchange is underway. Expected completion date is September 1, 2012.

• Traffic may encounter lane closures during nighttime hours between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM the following morning. Work will be seven days per week.

• Shoulder closures are also possible during daytime hours.

• The speed limit will be posted at 55 MPH, both daytime and nighttime, for the duration of the project, and will be enforced. Double fines will be imposed for ticketed violations when workers are present.

• Watch for trucks entering and leaving the work zone, and please use caution when traveling through the work zone.

I-71 (MP 61 – MP 64) IN GALLATIN COUNTY REVIVE THE DRIVE – NKY MEDIAN BARRIER CABLE PROJECT

• Traffic may encounter a left lane closure on I-71 southbound between MP 61 and MP 64 during daylight hours from 10:00 PM on Sundays through noon on Fridays. These closures may occur from now through June 15th, except no closures will be in place during the Memorial Day Weekend (May 25th through May 28th).

• Both northbound and southbound inside shoulders on I-71 between MP 61 and MP 64 will be closed from May 14th through June 15th.

• For the protection of the workers in this area, as well as the traveling public, the speed limit will be reduced to 55 MPH for the duration of the work on both northbound and southbound I-71 within the work limits. Watch for trucks entering and leaving the lane closure and use caution when passing through this area. PLEASE SLOW DOWN TO 55 MPH!

KYTC District 6 Road Report

District wide Striping – District wide striping operations are scheduled to begin all over District 6.  Be on the lookout for striping trains, which are mobile traffic control operations with escort vehicles and crash cushion attenuators that move at a slower pace than normal traffic flow.  Expect minor delays when encountering these operations.  Also be aware that wet paint is being applied to the roadway, avoid running over newly painted lines.   

BOONE COUNTY

• KY 18 (Burlington Pike) to KY 1303 (Turfway Road) Connector (new South Airfield Road - KY 18 will continue to have shoulder closures NB and SB from MP 13.0 Kenner Drive to MP 12.7 Oakbrook Road. Watch for trucks entering and exiting traffic to access the construction zone at this location on KY 18. Construction trucks will also be utilizing KY 18 at the Zigzag Road intersection. Trucks will also be entering and exiting traffic at the construction zone at Turfway Road MP 2.0 and at Houston Road across from Woodspoint Drive. Beginning June 4 to June 25, along Turfway Road from Turfway MP 2.0 to Thoroughbred, the southbound right hand turn lane onto Thoroughbred will be closed.

• Pleasant Valley Road (KY 237) from US 42 to Rose Petal Drive – As construction continues on this project, please watch for work crews along Pleasant Valley Road (KY 237), Gunpowder Road (KY 237) and the US 42 intersection.  Old Toll Road is now opened as a right in and right out only.  Please watch for flaggers and be aware of trucks entering and exiting the highway.  Motorists are advised that the speed limit has been reduced to 35 MPH through this area.  Traffic may be stopped for short periods of time to allow equipment to pass.  Expect minor delays. 

• KY 237 (North Bend Road) from KY 18 (Burlington Pike) to KY 3168 (Limaburg Road) – As construction resumes on this project, please watch for work crews along North Bend Road.  Lane restrictions may be in place at various times during daylight working hours.  Please watch for flaggers and be aware of trucks entering and exiting the highway.  The speed limit has been reduced to 45 MPH on this project.  Expect minor delays.

BOONE-KENTON COUNTIES

• Industrial Road (KY 1829) from Dixie Highway (US 25) to Turkeyfoot Road (KY 1303) – As construction continues on this project, please watch for work crews along Industrial Road (KY 1829).  Please watch for flaggers and be aware of trucks entering and exiting the highway.  Motorists are advised that the speed limit has been reduced to 35 MPH through this area.  Traffic may be stopped for short periods of time to allow equipment to pass.  Expect minor delays.

CAMPBELL COUNTY

• KY 1996 Steven’s Branch Road – Beginning at 6pm on Friday, June 1, 2012, KY 1996 will close between KY 10 and KY 1121.  Local access will be provided, but through traffic will not be permitted.  The road will re-open to traffic by 6am on June 11th 2012.  A detour will not be posted.

• Knollwood Drive at the intersection of John’s Hill Road in Highland Heights -    Construction has resumed, another closure is scheduled to continue the construction of the roundabout intersection at New John’s Hill, Knollwood, New University and Martha Layne.  Knollwood Drive will remain closed until approximately late June. Watch for posted detours for Knollwood Drive.

• US 27 Racetrack Road to East Nagel Road. (Falmouth to Newport Road) - Road Construction continues on US 27.  The work zone will encompass the area between Parkside Drive and Nagel Road (West); flaggers may be used at multiple locations along mainline US 27.  Access to KY 154 is provided at the Herringer Road Connector intersection.  New Siry Road is open and provides access to Old Siry Road. The Herringer Road Connector is open and provides access to Herringer Road.   Watch for construction equipment entering and leaving the roadway.  The speed limit throughout the work-zone is reduced to 45 MPH.

GALLATIN COUNTY

• I-71 NB and SB @ MP 57 - Crews will be working on I-71 NB and SB around MP 57 and MP 60 and SB exit ramp at Exit 57.  Watch for lane closures and trucks entering and leaving roadway.

GRANT COUNTY

• BARNES PIKE 3-Lane Improvement from U.S. 25 (KY-3025) to I-75 interchange (via Barnes Road Corridor) – Construction has begun on this project.  Please beware of lane closures with short delays. There will an increase of trucks throughout this project as the contractor begins moving material as this project moves into the next phase. Trucks are entering and leaving the roadway via the interstate median onto Barnes Road. Watch for the trucks, equipment and personnel, pay close attention to flag personnel in this area. With the construction work in close proximity to the traffic and the congestion in this area the speed limit will be posted at 25 mph. This area has become very active with the additional construction personnel, vehicles and equipment. The project is scheduled for completion fall 2012. 

HARRISON COUNTY

• US 27 Viaduct in Cynthiana – US 27 will be shut down to one lane for bridge and embankment work on the Cynthiana Viaduct starting June 4th.  The lane closure will be controlled using temporary traffic signals.  This work will be ongoing for approximately 4 weeks.  Expect only minor delays and obey the temporary traffic measures.

• Motorists should be aware of any construction traffic that may enter the roadway along US 27, US 62, KY 32, KY 356 and KY 36. Please be alert to construction equipment and vehicles as you travel along these roadways in the vicinity of the by-pass construction. As the project moves along, further updates will be provided.

KENTON COUNTY

• Taylor Mill Road – Southern End - KY 16 (From Sunbrite Drive to Kleete Road) - Construction is beginning on Taylor Mill Road (KY 16) between Sunbrite Drive and Kleete Road.  All traffic patterns will remain in their current location at this time.  The speed limit throughout the project will be reduced to 30 MPH.  Please watch for flaggers and construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway. A signed detoured is in place for the Oak Ridge Baptist Church to use Clubhouse Drive.

• Taylor Mill Road - Northern End - KY 16 (From Blackstone to I-275) –Watch for utility and work crews as clearing operations begin and continue throughout the daytime hours.

PENDLETON COUNTY

• KY 22 (Bridge replacement over the Licking River) – A major bridge replacement project has begun on KY 22 in between KY 159 and the Licking River.  Watch for work crews as construction continues. Further updates will be provided as the work progresses throughout this year. After inspection, the bridge weight limit over the Licking River in Falmouth will continue to be posted at 3 tons (gross vehicle weight). The Shoemaker Bridge over the Licking River on KY 22 will be closed from 8:00am to 9:00pm on Wednesday June 6, 2012 for repair work.

The KYTC offers the following tips for motorists when they approach a work zone:

1. Expect the unexpected.

2. Slow down.

3. Don’t tailgate. Keep a safe distance between you and the car ahead of you.

4. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the construction workers and equipment.

5. Pay attention to the signs.

6. Obey road crew flaggers.

7. Stay alert and minimize distractions.

8. Keep up with the traffic flow.

10. Be patient and stay calm.

Remember construction and maintenance activities are scheduled on a tentative basis and are subject to change depending on weather conditions, emergencies, and other factors beyond the control of the Department of Highways. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet appreciates your patience during the construction process.

Motorists are urged to use caution in work areas, and to be alert for flaggers, workers, and equipment which may block a portion of the roadway, and other items of concern in work zones. Motorists are asked to pay careful attention to warning signs alerting them of the roadwork and obey work zone speed limits where applicable.
